When I was in college I used to go watch Cal play a regular gig at the Omni in Cincinnati - he was an amazing player - the best I had ever seen - played with Benny Goodman quite a bit if I remember correctly - very nice guy too - for me, an aspiring young guitarist living in Ohio it was an incredible thrill to see this "guitar superman" live - thanks for posting
indeed it was. When I saw it I recognized the basement right away bc I followed him to every gig that would allow me to. When I got sleepy I'd curl up and go to sleep in his bass case. lol
Jimmy Raney's playing is so damn melodic and true to the bebop tradition. I almost fell of my chair the first time I heard him. Since then he has been my favorite bebop guitarist next to Tal Farlow. Cal Collin's rhythm playing was amazing on all of the videos in this Actors Theater series. He really seems to channel Django Reinhardt at times with those great string bends.
Tal is my favorite jazz guitarist too, especially his recordings from 1956-1960. I was a reed player, but after hearing Tal's "The Swinging Guitar of Tal Farlow" (now on CD) I gave up reeds & became a jazz guitarist.I thought this recording was the coolest thing I had ever heard.I may be wrong, but I think Tal was the first jazz guitarist to play bebop on guitar at this level.
great swingig video but that's not tal that's cal collins the most underrated guitarist in jazz history. I also think charlie christian was the first guitarist to play bop. keep swinging
My first experience with jazz guitar was master classes with Mr. Raney at UofL school of music. I wasn't prepared for how wicked he was. It was like watching magic. I still have his hand written course notes somewhere...
You're very lucky to have had that experience. I have the Aebersold books and they are my favorites. Such clean, well-executed lines, and endless ideas.
I don't know of any recordings of them together, but they did used to hang out. Jimmy said that Charlie would stop by his apt and drink all his gin and listen to his records.
Jimmy Raney at his best! Absolutely the king of bebop guitar!! This video is really great and displays his never-ending melodic ideas as proof of his mastery of jazz guitar!!
Wonderful video.. thank you for posting it... Cal Collins in San Francisco was the first jazz album I bought in the local music store. Come to think of it, laying around somewhere is a Jimmy Raney
Cal Collins San Fransisco has my favorite cut in the world...."Sometimes I'm Happy" the evolving and ebb and flow of mood is amazing.
Cal was a friend who I miss. Any way you could post the audio of "Sometimes I'm Happy"?Even though you most likely don't know me, it sure would be HUGE to me.
Saw a video of LS and ML on BBC some years back. ML reckoned Bill Evans composed 'Waltz for Debbie' as tribute to ML's daughter. Someone else reckoned that was wrong, so I dunno now! This is great stuff of course. I have a good few Raney records, glad to say.
The term genius really applys to Raney . As far as single note playing goes he has no equal . His time is the best. Check out Jimmy Raney Live in Tokyo for his best recording but skip the additional tracks added that weren't on the lp.
raney had such a gift - his son is damn good too and they have at least one album together (dont know if it was issued on cd or not) - cal is no slouch either, I "discovered" him in Cincinnati playing in a hotel bar of a swank hotel (forget which one) - his playing was magic and he was so nice - great guy - we spent some time discussing music, etc., - i had no idea he was famous - this was when i was in college in athens ohio, maybe 17 years ago - funny, i still feel the same....
Phenomenal! I've never seen Jimmy Raney on video. What a great touch, lines, sound everything! If you have any more, please post them - this is a treasure.
Note to students of jazz guitar: Now. What was that you said about that collection of Jazz Licks in the back of Book 4, Intermediate Studies for Jazz Guitar being unimportant? Better play this vid again.

I agree with you that Cal Collins is vastly underrated as a jazz guitarist. I especially love his cool, crisp sound; Tal Farlow: oops, my mistake!

You could be right there. But listen to Django playing his own composition 'Rhythm Futur'.. Boppy and way ahead of its time.

For all Jimmy's fans, don't forget to get 2 CDs from Jamey Aebersold (volumes 20 & 29): you won't regret it.
You will play-along as long as you like with Jimmy and a good rythmic section.
