jimi hendrix aint got shit on miles. he might play his guitar, his blues, whatever but this is different. this shit is meant to be played by pete cosey or mclaughlin.
I love the way Miles leads the band with Mtume. This band is bad--and Al Foster is amazingly locked in with Mtume. This a great period, regardless of some critics. Searching the boundaries with blues roots. The spirit of pioneers. Takes heart. Thanks.
Beautiful and stirring! Not a huge fan of the live versions of Calypso Frelimo. For those who must denigrate an artist due to substance abuse accusations or other such utterly childish and inane, irrelevant judgments, try some self-examination. If you can't get next to the spirituality and humanity of this period of Mr. Davis' music, the fault is with you, in your unnecessarily bitter heart and stubbornly closed mind.
I'm pretty sure that's Pete Cosey on guitar, getting to play over those very eerie bass riffs. this is one of my favorite Hendrix sounding Miles songs and this performance has some of the better sections I've ever heard. the opening bass line is outstanding. thanx for posting this.
one of better live Miles clips I've ever seen, especially since it has a good dose of guitar playing and again the bass riffs and playing is very heavy.
@Gintodalbert hahahahahaha each and everyone of these motherf*ckers are coked up out of their minds...this is so funny...Miles blows his nose @05:40...Yeah I agree the guitar does look like he's on heroin...you said he died not long afterwards...what a shame for him and how the music suffered, cause they ain't playing sh*t...I saw Miles perform 3 times in this "On The Corner" period and each and every show reminded me of this...garbage. He would play a 45 minute set of this and then it was over.
@Gintodalbert But I'll give Miles and the band some credit....It is extremely hard to concentrate and play while you're high on coke.....The reasons why his sets were so, so, so short during this period was because everybody wanted to get off stage to get HIT....that's how it is, that how it went back then .....Later
@lestmbly last I checked,Miles' main drug of choice was not cocaine..but heroin. I thought everyone knew that. you would be able to tell he was high on coke. music wouldve been much faster.
I can recommend a newish CD - MD Septet Live in Vienna 1973. It's November that year so the band''s really getting into its stride. This number (Ife) and Calypso Frelimo (the number they've segued into) are on it - Ife is evolving into something darker...The quality of the recording is pretty good. The CD cover is taken from the above - Miles at Montreux. About 8 pounds on Amazon - a bargain for music so great.
"Ife" and Calypso Frelimo". "Calypso Frelimo" to me was the best moments during 1973-74 for this band. Listen to Miles and Reggie Lucas go back and forth between 8:08-8:16. I swear Miles calls him a "muthafucka" after that. :)
NUUUUU!!! Where and how do I get the rest and all of this??? beyond amazing...
It's things like this that make me realize why Jimi Hendrix had to die when he did. Can you imagine if he and Miles actually DID get together and played?? Hooh mah gawd, the universe would have crumbled beneath our feet and we wouldn't have cared...that's what heaven is to me. them 2 playing Music.
On a more realistic note, this band line up is simply amazing. Thank god Miles went out and sought new talent.
This band wasn't ahead of their time.....they were simply OUT of time, beyond it. This shit was coming from somewhere W A Y out there...... Foster and Henderson were deadly, a force to be reckoned with.
I love this line-up but I don't know if I'd call it the best. It's About That Time - Fillmore March 1970 is just as amazing though the recording isn't as good - the engineer Stan Turkle hadn't quite figured out how to record that band. The Cellar Door sessions is pretty amazing too. Foster's a great drummer but he isn't nearly as fantastic a player as Jack DeJohnette
Hmmm, I think comparing Foster and DeJohnette is like comparing Mitch Mitchell and Buddy Miles with Jimi. I like DeJohnette, but I personally prefer Foster for his back-beat. (Yet, as much as I love the Band of Gypsys, I prefer Mitch over Buddy... go figure!)
My favorite line-up is the Dark Magus one, with Gaumont on 3rd guitar, but I really like "It's About That Time - Fillmore March 1970". I find DeJohnette and Corea incredible, and love the sax solo on Directions from disc 2. Amazing..!
I totally get the Buddy Miles/Mitch Mitchell thing. Gypsys was such a fantastic release and is probably my favorite Hendrix release but it's hard to argue about which drummer is better when you listen to 1983 from Electric Ladyland.
Yeah, I'm totally with you on that one...! 1983 and Voodoo Child (not "Slight Return", the long one) are 2 of my favorite tracks, and Mitch really shines on those.
Thank You Miles for the deepest music ever from Coltrane and Philly Jo in the 50s, Wayne, Herbie, and Tony in the 60s, and all of the insane 70s music that was 30 years ahead of its time...
Excuse me...Ife and Calypso Frelimo (about 7 mins of the performance) has footage. the whole concert is on a boxset which includes the "Untitled" funk track. the clips here are from the second set. Miles was booed on the first set...only heard on the CD. the rest of Calypso and the "Untitled" track are on disc two of the box set, "Miles at Montreau, 1973-1991".
i have been a die hard miles fan since i was three in 88. songs:
1. ife
2. Calypso Frelimo
3. Untitled Funk
ife has been a set mainstay between 72 and 75, where as "Calypso" (performed before recorded) and "Untitled" were performed between 73 and near the end of 74.
What albums could I find these songs on? I've got Kind of Blue and Bitches Brew and I'm looking to expand my collection. I especially love his Fusion stuff. Mmm...
why dont u try following miles from start to finish, 1945 to 1991. thats the best way to look for miles' music. there are plenty of miles groups out there to get music. Look up Peter Losin's miles site and that'll get u going. becuz all the music ur listening to here has only been performed (with the exception of Ife (72) and Calypso). Remember that none of miles live music reflects the studio work. only the themes
AGHARTA!! It´s certainly Miles Davis' finest hour, his most intense moment. But if you hear the original LP you'll see that this music is infinitely more radical and wild than it sounds now, on the LOUSY CD MIX. Columbia SANITIZED this recording on CD: it now sounds utterly FLAT!! CHECK THE ORIGINAL LP: Miles opens up a river of shining light-sound. To make a long story short: transfer the LP to a recordable CD, and then you'll be able to hear the AUTHENTIC AGHARTA!!
It's kinda funny that Michael Henderson would go on to sing romantic soul such as "Valentine Love" and "You are my Starship" with Norman Connors. Also "In the Nighttime" is one of the favorites. James Mtume and Reggie Lucas would combine their talents together and put out hits for Stephanie Mills, the late Phyllis Hyman and his own sexy Number One Hit with the Mtume band "Juicy Fruit". Interesting tidbit: Who produced a one Madonna very first album? None other than Reggie Lucas!!!
this band is on some of "get up with it". and is on "agartha" and "Panagea"also check out the dvd "miles electric, a different kind of blue". Read the book "miles beyond" Let's give major love & respect to brother AL FOSTER for holding the rock steady al day & playin musical drums Dig MTUME!!!!!!!
i just bought miles beyond out a bargin shop for nothing, never really paid miles much time but always likes tribute to jack johnson. the book is great and so thought i'd look this stuff up today. my mind has been seriously blown to bits!!
If anyone knows where I can get some CDs or DVDs of this band please contact me. I can't find anything from this band except for augmented on Dark Magus.
hahahaha nice comment but not true . . . they coulda done this without drugs just the drug advocates wanna keep that a secret . . . hahahahaha . . . when in a debate everyone is a conspirator . . . but don't let me start ranting about the drug debate . . . it was funny comment . . . enjoy the vid
i wonder what the album with jimi hendrix and miles would have sounded like, if only jimi didn't die???i bet it would have been the best all time favourit!gods of music both in their own right! respect to miles and all the players who have ever played with him.
you are the types that make watching and listen to guitar players so tedious and unrewarding at times . . . just take them for what they are . . . so you prefer Jazz . . . I happen to prefer Blues and Jimi is more Blues than Jazz therefore I would enjoy Jimi more than Pete but that doesn't neccessarilly make either better
Obviously objective value judgements are pointless when we're talking about artists. I was just trying to stir things up a little. Also, I don't really prefer Jazz to Blues...I actually prefer psychedelic/experimental rock to anything.
I just think that, compared to Hendrix, Pete Cosey is criminally underappreciated, even though--and this is just my opinion--he did even more radical and unprecedented things with the electric guitar than Jimi. This has nothing to do with technique or that whole "this guy can play things Jimi never could" mentality, which I find annoying as well. I love Hendrix and Cosey. I just think someone like Cosey who worked so hard to expand the vocabulary of his instrument deserves more credit.
furthermore I hear a lot "this guy can play thing Jimi never could" and it's like Jimi was a good guitar player at what he did, he played the way he learned cuz he taught himself, if he had wanted to he could have learned other things but he didn't need them and he was content with what he had same for Cosey and whoever else . . . just chill and enjoy the music
You know when you eat a lot of really good pie and your stomach is so full of really good pie that if you say anything at all, your insides may rupture and you would die a very slow, painful death, but be so happy, because the pie was that damn good? That kind of speechless. MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM
What a great year for Miles fans! This band really was something. What is difficult to hear is that bassist Michael Henderson was the anchor here. Guitars are Pete Cosey and Reggie Lucas.
Is Reggie Lucas the one with the hat on ? Than this is the guy who produced Madonna's Borderline. The percussionist is James M'Tume . Agreat line up man .
You're right. Cosey is the sitting ... er ... extended man with the huge afro. Melvin Gibbs recently took him out of the shadow for his project "Melvin Runs the Hoodoo Down" presented on his MySpace site.
Yo! These cats where so lay back and chill on stage! You felt the energy! Very patient with there sound! Miles would give them the cue's and they followed them so well. Love that wah wah effect on miles horn, love that light break beat towards the end. Who is that guitar player he is no joke!
