@TheatreGrove Colin Donnell (or 'fedora man' as you call him) was out doing an Encores Series show for several weeks. He should be back in now. But Sutton leaves March 11.
@mmbr01rrf Totally IGNORE everything I just posted because I realized you weren't talking about the Billy Crocker character. I just had a major brain fart, sorry. BUT Sutton is leaving after March 11th. That info is correct.
Wow. You Foster fans sure are a classy bunch! I make a totally reasonable critique, and the fans respond with little else but rude personal attacks and shrieking about ludicrous negativity.
Maybe I should have stuck with, "not my cup of tea" but I found her performance so grating I felt perhaps others could explain why they liked it so much. I guess I expected too much from this articulate audience. As I said in my first post, maybe it doesn't translate to video.
@cpoticha fans are upset because you did more than "critique her" which is saying "I don't like how she....or I disliked her performance because...." blah blah etc. U were insulting in your later comments...calling her a "mouseketeer with no ears" or an "imposter". If you say things like that on a video of her, how do you think fans will respond? They attacked you because you did not "make a totally reasonable critique".
@cpoticha You hate her? Then you get up there and dance for seven minutes long and sing like THAT. She's not trying to be Ethel Merman, not even by a longshot. But she brings new life and her own spark to the character.
as someone playing the part of Billy in an upcoming performence of "Anything Goes" I would love to have the oppertunity to act alongside Ms Foster as she is without a doubt a Delightful, a Delicious, a Delectable honour to watch perform. ove you Sutton keep up the amazing work!
Funny how 14 dislikes only appeared after one poster started spamming negative and ludicrous comments. Sutton has no ear? !! She uses vibrato when appropriate and when she straight tones, she is right on pitch. And, her phrasing is perfect. Love how they come to performances they dislike and post again and again.
@cpoticha I'm sorry that you are deaf and cannot hear this video, but stooping to calling it bad because you can't hear, trying to be the one person that thinks her talent isn't good so you can be singled out amonst the rest. You have done that good sir, I congradulate you on catching my attention, but I say this as kindly as I can, you are a dipshit.
@cpoticha You need to know how to get over yourself and enjoy life. Everyone has their own opinion, but to say this is "dreadful" is beyond ridiculous. I have actually SEEN the play, and I had a great evening. Silly me, I thought it was because it was great.
Ah, but Merman she ain't. There's no need for Foster to attempt to ape her. To me she just sounds dreadful. And there doesn't appear to be any awareness of the text or communication with the audience. Is there anything else I need to know?
@cpoticha Never said she was trying to be Merman. We both know that there will never be another Ethel Merman. Sutton Foster has disregarded past interpretations of this role in order to make it her own which makes this such a brilliant performance. Her movements, gestures, timing, and emphasis on certain lyrics brings a certain sharpness to the number which I think Porter intended to create. In terms of her vocal technique, we'll just have to agree to disagree.
Dreadful? Oh please. The Merm would be the first to smack you for being such a twit. Does anyone else think CPoticha auditioned for the role and didn't get a call back???
@greg1lewin .... LMAO!!!! I'd bet a week's salary you are exactly right!!! the a-hole auditioned for the role and didn't get a call back ! LOL!!!! great stuff!
@cpoticha ... you have to be THE most ridiculous and totally TONE DEAF stupid individual on this ENTIRE planet to post those comments! I bet you're FAT, GROSS, and you smell like a PIG!.... just sayin'....
Her rumored talent must not transfer to video. The timbre, phrasing and tone of her singing is just awful—typical, I'm afraid, of the current post-Little Mermaid Broadway style. Even when you feel the misguided need to belt it out like this, you still have to marry your vocals to the music of the orchestra, and sing the words as if they mean something. Foster just sounds like she's shouting, "KIDS!!! TURN OFF THE TV, AND COME SET THE TABLE!"
What a disservice to Cole Porter's wit and genius!
@cpoticha Clearly you don't know much about Cole Porter's wit and genius if you consider this revival a disservice. And I suggest that before you refer to the misguided need to belt this song, remember that it was originally written for Ethel freaking Merman!
@cokebottlelenses It took months for her to build up the endurance for this number and 'Blow Gabriel Blow'. Obviously one cannot just get up one day and decide to run a marathon... it takes a lot of practice and dedication!
@lifeinapan It did take quite awhile to build up endurance. Rehersals started a year ago today. Early press clips are somewhat different. Sutton has talked about this in a few interviews.
@gabegoodman09 It's called spotting =) The trick is to fix a point in the distance and then keep your eyes on it as you turn, and whip your head around at the last minute and fix right back on that spot. It also looks really sharp because you get the neat head flick every time.
I'm just glad that somebody captured this fabulous performance for everyone to be able to enjoy over and over again---until equity pulls it down lol. And no---there is NO Wed./Sat Reno---with that technique, if she's not sick, she's there and singing (and dancing) the hell out of every moment.
Saw it in previews. Easily Sutton's greatest performance and thought the show was wonderful...probably one of the best revivals ever and far better than the 1987 production.
Two things I noticed: Fodora Man was replaced our not there that night and Sutton took the country-style break out of her voice with is great!

This comment has received too many negative votes show
When Broadway's sunk to casting Sutton, who's acting is fit for nothin' but TV shows, anything goes.
And while the fans all swoon for Foster, I say she's a mere impostor in stylish clothes. Anything goes.
The Starsearch crowd seem quite content to laud starlets, but I lament her stiff awkward pose. A.G.
Methinks they just adore the tailors who packaged the dancing sailors as dreamy beaux. A.G.
The public praise a Mouseketeer who wins Tonys but has no ear, so I'll hold my nose. Anything goes.
