  • She really is positively delightful...

  • rachmaninoff!

  • Looks mediocre.

  • @UppityQueer Try "The Passionate Friends" with Claude Rains. He's delightful!

  • Another place where the trailer differs from the final cut of the film: in the trailer, the first bridge scene is from a slightly different POV, and the scene ends after the kiss, not during.

I rather appreciate the differences between trailer and film - gives more clues into Alec's perspective.

  • What I would do for a brief encounter with Trevor Howard...

  • Aw, my absolute favouritest film of all time - I completely adore it and cry every time!!! This is the first time I've seen the trailer - my dvd has absolutely no extras!

Oh I have a question - at about 1.27 - thats a different take on what was in the film, isn't it, because at 1.47 when he kisses her head - I'm fairly positive I don't remember that moment - because its standing out me watching this trailer after seeing the film at least 9 times. can someone confirm?

  • @Ed86Wood I just watched my DVD, and he doesn't kiss her head. She cries "There's still time." And puts her head in his hands. He looks down at her and says "There's no time at all." Then it goes to the next scene, of them going to catch their trains. The Criterion DVD includes the trailer; the one that I have -- Essential Art House -- doesn't.

  • None of which would have happened, if only she had gone to SpecSavers.

  • Just so wonderful.

  • If the final scene doesn't make your eyes moist---check your pulse.

  • They played a married couple in Paul Scot's "Staying on.

    Well worth watching.

  • One insomniac night I saw this movie and was blown away. I never knew the title because I caught it a bit after the initial scenes were shown. It wasn't until I watched the History Boys, where they re-enacted the ending scene that I found out it was Brief Encounters. It was too memorable to forget. *sigh they don't make movies like they use to.

  • Yes I saw it once "by accident "and have loved it ever since..the music, the cast, the clipped accents, the twist of fate ..unforgettable magic!

  • The talents of Noel Coward, David Lean and Sergei Rachmaninov, plus great actors - this movie kicks ass even now in 2009.

  • I agree; I wish they had made a sequel so we could find out like how they coped with the situation a year later or something like that. It's just one of those enduring, beautiful films where the characters are likable and you feel their pain. They just don't make movies like this anymore...

  • It was filmed in Carnforth station in Lancashire, worlds away from the home counties.

  • Yes, and that really surprised me, when that stark fact dawned on me, after closely reading the credits, because - for years (and I am 70) - I had got it into my silly head that the station was somewhere in Surrey, and that the capital was London. Anyway, irrespective of the locations, it was, is and always will be, a marvellous piece of cinematic romance, for my money, and we owe everything to the distinguished cast, along with Coward and Lean, who wove the magic, and made it happen.

  • The Carnforth Station Visitor Centre is well worth a visit as well, its free entry and has a Brief Encounter exhibition.

  • I FOUND A LINK TO WATCH THIS MOVIE ONLINE, FULL AND FREE:

    (ERASE THE *)

  • sorry to tell you, the movie has been removed

    sad news

  • How cruel to use Rachmaminoff as well...

    Sigh.

  • cruel? or aptly poignant ?

  • Thanks for posting this. It's one of my favourite films. We were on holiday at the Lake District last week and spent a wet, windy day trying to find the bridge. Ended up soaked to the skin with photos of the wrong one! Must watch the whole film again soon.

  • yes sir!

    that is a MAN

today is hard to meet someone and not ask yourself if he's gay

you really can't wait to take the train

  • Though Criterion's release was earlier (circa 1999)i saw an image of an MGM DVD (dating 2004) of that but is not available. Why is that?

  • LOVE TREVOR HOWARD, ALSO TREVOR IS MY FAVORITE NAME, I KNOW THE WHOLE WORLD CAN NOW RELAX NOW THAT THEY KNOW THAT... THIS FILM IS STARTING A NEW REBIRTH THANKS TO THE MULTIBLE SHOWINGS ON TCM... WHY CAN'T THERE BE MORE TCM FOR GOD SAKE WE HAVE 13 HBO s and they are all crap

  • The rebirth as you call it could be as a result of the fact that brief encounters happen all the time especially when the NEX from Leeds to Kings Cross is delayed by seven hours.

Oh, and don't forget what mobile phones are used for! School boy error.

  • A class film no doubt. Agree with comments on cynicsm try this, people are to watered down nowadays to really appreciate it though.

  • Celia told Noel Coward that she didn't want to play the role because she was too old. Thanks to Noel for convincing her she was wrong. In fact, that Johnson is no youngster, yet beautiful, is absolutely fitting for the film.

When Celia is out walking at night trying to get things straight in her mind a bobby suspects her of prostitution. The moral triumph in the end is fine, but it's a desperately unhappy movie, with its visions of a "high romance" fading, fading, gone.

  • i suppose, he suspected her of being suicidal

  • Fabulous!!!

  • i just watched the last scene...cried my eyes out ..AGAIN!!!!!

  • This film indicates how backwards Western society is. Since the Industrial Revolution, relations are reduced to 'cash'. No one cares for each other, unless their paid for it. Both women and men are hemmed in...

  • Wonderful!!! Thanks!

  • Simply Devine!

  • oh my god! I love this fim so much!! thank you for posting the trailer!!!

  • We live in an age of cyinicsm. Try this

  • @Fansditch - And immorality. Some modern people don't understand why Laura and Alec can't just have it off. Sad state of affairs for todays's society, that they think adultery is fine.

  • @missbabyice I agree.

  • One of the greatest films ever made. Celia Johnson just floors me with her charming, provincial looks. She is riveting with her beautiful eyes and screen presence. Love her? Yes, I do. Next Thursday? I'll be there. . .

  • Too bad she's dead (since 1982).

  • Great stuff!

  • The Rachmaninov soundtrack is played by the great Tasmanian pianist Eileen Joyce! Thanks for posting this video.

  • I can't believe there is this film here !!! Oh,, but I love this film !! Even the one with Sofia Loren... Both are wonderful !!

  • Fab!

  • Thanks
