S&E going on a tangent about how provocative the main character is kinda reminds me of when Hayao Miyzaki went to Canada for the opening of Princess Mononoke in that country and he got interviewed. One of the first questions he was asked was about the intense violence that was in very few scenes, as if it ruined the whole movie. Westerners raise such big deals about these things. If the Japanese can handle these subjects maturely, why can't we?
i think there is still a misconception that animated movies are intended for children. westerners seem just as capable of handling violence and nudity in war, action, and horror movies, but assume that animated pictures are going to be kid movies.
@barbedheart Ebert's a huge fan of animation, in general. He's reviewed a lot of anime movies over the years. Also, you should read his review of the Last Airbender movie, where he tears Shyamalan a new one for not doing respect to one of his favorite shows of recent years.

Making women both sex-object and protagonist is how you appeal to both men and women. That's why we're seeing so much more of it in Western films as well.
@anime1973 Oh please! lol If you think sexualization isn't a MAJOR part of what sells in anime then you don't know shit about it. They don't get upset about nudity, true. But to infer from that that they don't find nudity titilating is absurd. The fact that Kusanagi is fetishized is part of what the story is about. And if the nudity is no big deal, how come every nude shot is of a female, and every female has perfect, often very large breasts? You're just wrong.
This movie is good and they make a good point about the sex object ideal. Most anime of the 80s had this trope and it still lasts today, though japan has gotten more PC lately :/
Did you grew up with this movie as a 90's teen as well? i was 15 about 15 years ago when i saw this movie after being impressed by Akira and hearing great reviews on it and that it had a theatrical release in city theaters. on that sex thing, what do you think of stuff like Urotsukidoji Legend of the Overfiend or Wicked City?
@Johnlindsey289 Actually, no, I was a 00's teen, but after seeing this and Akira I quickly went backwards and saw things like Fist of the North Star, and films from Satoshi Kon and noticed how they treat women; often with a lack of respect. I haven't seen either of the films you mention, which sucks, because they're probably good examples for a (would be) good discussion here. Oh well.
What do you think of Ninja Scroll and Vampire Hunter D 1 & 2? Urotsukidoji Legend of the Overfiend is the movie that spawned the demon tentacle stuff and earned an NC-17 rating.
@Johnlindsey289 I think NS and and the 2nd Vampire Hunter D films are the typical trash I think Siskel was used to. The first VHD flick was OK, but all have the misogynist undertones and less artistic merit and intellect than Ghost in the Shell.
is siskel a retard?. science fiction is one of the richest genres in film: alien, aliens, 2001, the thing, blade runner, a clockwork orange, the matrix, watchmen, inception, district 9, jurassic park, predator, terminator 1 and 2, sunshine, signs, the fly, star wars, donnie darko, children of men, solaris. it even works when it fails. most of them are interesting. and most are more imaginative as well. which is the most important part of the story
@ndalum75 All Shinji does is cry, bitch, and moan about piloting a giant world saving robot (yes I know it's not really just a robot). Go find any 14 year old boy off the street and ask if he'd like to pilot a giant robot. It's a story about a selfish coward.
@InsideTheMirror Y'know, If you had been completely been abandoned by your father and then 10 years later told to pilot a giant robot which you constantly almost die in, I think you'd bitch and moan and cry too. If he's such a selfish coward, why did he jump in after Asuka in episode 10 with no orders knowing full well his cable could break and he could die with her? That doesn't sound very cowardly to me.
@ndalum75 Irrationality and stupidity doesn't account towards courageousness. He knew of his importance and risked it by doing something stupid. These days divorce and abandonment are the norm and you don't see everyone flipping the fuck out (I'm certainly not the one to talk about compassion with). Everyone in Eva is either bland and lifeless or overreacting and mentally unstable. Only masochists and anime fanboys actually legitimately believe Eva to be any good.
"They haven't gotten politically correct yet".... frankly, I hope japanese filmakers never become politically correct. Their refusal to bow to the bitching of self proclaimed "moral supevisers" is what makes japanese films so unique.
DO NOT watch this with english dubbing. One of the best animated movies ever made is ruined by lame ass English voice acting. Stick with the vastly superior subtitling along with excellent Japanese voice acting.
@berserkley there are some people, myself included, who like the english dubbing. if you don't like it that's fine but keep in mind that there are some people out there who don't like subs. The dubbing of the godzilla movies on the other hand is where I perfer the subs
@Arthus850 You are correct; I probably could have worded it a little better. My point was not that it was dubbed, but that it was dubbed horribly (IMHO.) Lame translation and bad voice acting just sunk it for me. I should say that I love the dubbing on the Miyazaki animes.; some of my favorites. But generally, I prefer the subs.
@berserkley I've never seen this movie so I don't know how good or bad the dub is. I only saw its tv anime spinoff and I don't know how good it is compared to the movie, but I liked the dubbing
@Arthus850 About the dubs/subs debate, there is both bad and good subs, and there are good and bad dubs. It's all about what you like personally. For example, the Berserk dub is amazing, much better than the subs. I personally prefer hearing the original Japanese voice acting when the anime is actually set in Japan.
@HalfBlindSkull that's true. I remember seeing this inuyasha movie 4 sub where there was this female character who's name was clearly asagi and yet the sub said her name was kagome which happens to be the name of the heroine. I personaly like almost all dubs except for 4kids (of course) and the godzilla dubs
@HalfBlindSkull When I saw the berserk dub outtakes for it, I first thought it was kind of funny, but something about it just bugged me. The american sensibility of professionalism compared with the japanese voice actors. You don't get it from here, You don't feel as much conviction. reason being is in american cartoons it's all saturday morning variety. We don't treat cartoons as seriously as the japanese do. That's the feeling I get about it, and that's why I don't like it.
@InterRage Then watch "Batman: The Animated Series." You'll be blown away by the voice acting in that. It's stupendous. Everything about the show, is stupendous.
funny how the sequel deals so much with sexuality and objectification
anonymousbl00dlust 3 weeks ago
Well Hayao's leads are almost entirely female, and definately not sexual. It would defeat the purpose of his beliefs, and I respect that.
