During WW2 US produced 10's of thousands of Sherman medium tanks rather than build a super tank like the Tiger. In the end, US beat German Panzer forces due to better logistics and having many more tanks. A friend of mine fought with Patton in the 3rd Army as a tank driver, he said his losses were 300% and there never was a lack of supply of more tanks..

The Soviet tankers loved the Shermans as fast and reliable and in number kicked Tiger tanks to the curb. US strategy at the time was to build many tanks not just a few super tanks as was the Soviet ideas towards the medium T-34 tank which proved excellent against German armor.

The Iraqi T72's were terrible. They were models that were 70's era downgraded russian exports firing 1970's ammo. There is no way they had any chance unless they point black sideshotted the M1's.
After the diasterous 2007 lebanon war where 72 merkavas were destroyed by russian built ATGM's, it just isint the same.
Only the T72's in Soviet service would have been able to stand up to the M1.
52 Merkava main battle tanks were damaged (45 of them by different kinds of ATGM), missiles penetrated 22 tanks, but only 5 tanks were totally destroyed (2 of them by improvised explosive devices).
The Israelis lost 10 tank crew total. I'd say the Russian ATGMs are hardly a major threat, especially with quick kill and trophy coming on-line.
T-72Bs, the Russian variant of the tank, are superior to all NATO armor. T-72BMs, T-80U, T-80UM, T-80U5, T-90, and T-90M variants in Russian service can kill Abrams like it's made of tin foil XD. Silly cunt :P

UN red tape prevented the americans from bringing anything other than lightly armed infantry, transport helicopters and utility vehicles. You have to have a fair view on things, if you've ever been on the battlefield, you'd understand that fighting a bunch of middle-eastern ragheads with 50-year-old soviet armor, doesn't count as a good measure of american armor.
And you are wrong about the armor of the Abrams'. You are thinking of Chobam armor, which the Americans used on the original M1 Abrams. From the M1A1 onwards, however, they used a completely American depleted Uranium/hardened steel composite.

The Iraqis operated the export variant of the T-72, granted it was not as good as the Soviet variant but it could still ruin your day with the right aim. and the us military educates its tankers and soldiers to a high degree. They knew what they were talking about.
You have to remember that numbers sometimes do count in a battle. During WW2, the Germans had the best tanks (aside from the Russians). The way the US Army defeated the German tanks was to mass their Shermans against a single Panzer or Tiger. And it took quite a few rounds of Sherman fire to take out a Tiger or a Panzer. Never, ever underestimate the enemy. If you can manage that, you're one step closer to winning.

The Iraqi T72's were terrible. They were models that were 70's era downgraded russian exports firing 1970's ammo. There is no way they had any chance unless they point black sideshotted the M1's.
After the diasterous 2007 lebanon war where 72 merkavas were destroyed by russian built ATGM's, it just isint the same.
Only the T72's in Soviet service would have been able to stand up to the M1.

52 Merkava main battle tanks were damaged (45 of them by different kinds of ATGM), missiles penetrated 22 tanks, but only 5 tanks were totally destroyed (2 of them by improvised explosive devices).
The Israelis lost 10 tank crew total. I'd say the Russian ATGMs are hardly a major threat, especially with quick kill and trophy coming on-line.

Some spotters needed to have been sent out so that they could moblize, if, they tend to be out of the tanks of fear for airstrikes.
No I would send out spotters in a perimiter and also allow them to surrender immediately AFTER they allerted the camp.

The US had neither tanks nor major air power engaged we lost 72 dead against thousands of dead Somali. The US was there on a humanitarian mission not a war footing and we had few support troops and very little logistical support and still, like in Vietnam we killed thousands while being outnumbered on their ground and still prevailed.

@Goldrag no, because they were not there to fight a war. The whole raid was an attempt to capture the top officers of the local Somolian warlord. UN red tape prevented the americans from bringing anything other than lightly armed infantry, transport helicopters and utility vehicles. Had they been able to bring tanks, gunships and artillery the somolians would have been slaughtered on an even greater scale (think tens of thousands).

Despite the fact that Soviets killed over 1 million fighters, and in the records that Gorbachev released in 89-91, showed the Russian losses pretty minimal. Meanwhile, the Americunt military must lie about them by who knows how much. Maybe a factor of 10? And that's just KIAs btw, not even friendly fire kills, suicides (in the thousands easily), and deaths from wounds.

Iraq's tank crews were poorly trained and many of the gunners did not know how to use the laser range finders on the T72's.
Also Iraq used their tanks as mobile artillery units instead of fighting on the move as they should have done.

the best iraqi tank is about 30 years old. many are t-50s-t-70s. they only had a handfull of t72s. Which is still far inferior to the abrams, which uses a german 120mm rheinmetal and german aiming computers, combined with british armor. Far from the best tank, but sufficient US training.

Never said it was, All i said was that it would not be a good measure of training or tactics. anyone with an abrams and intermediate training could crush those old tanks. I didn't say i would downgrade my tanks in battle, just to be "fair". When judging battles, it is important to be fair to all sides, because, truth be told, if american troops came up against well-trained and troops armed with modern tanks, they would fair far worse then that on the battlefield. They're not invincible.

The iraqis were battle-hardened from 8 years of war with iran. They were experienced and ready to fight. They out-numbered us. They had over 900,000 soldiers and the iraqi republican guard was very well trained. They had 400 T-72s. Yes the abrams has a german gun but it has an american aiming computer. The armor is based on the british design but it has led composits and depleted uranium. it is similar to british armor but is far from identicle. Get your facts streight

Experience is nothing without the equipment. Abrams can see in the dark, and has an automated aiming system and a computer stabilization. the old soviet tanks. let me put it this way, you're fighting modern, computerized tanks, with world war 2 era tanks. They couldn't move and shoot, they didn't have tracking devices or anything. Numbers don't mean shit, when the equipment is that far superior. the iran-iraq war was from 1980-1988. Most iraqi soldiers who fought where discharged by that time.

It is british composite armor, bought from the british. Not "similiar" it IS british armor. It is a german rheinmetal, and the aiming system was made under license from a german company. You have to have a fair view on things, if you've ever been on the battlefield, you'd understand that fighting a bunch of middle-eastern ragheads with 50-year-old soviet armor, doesn't count as a good measure of american armor.

And you are wrong about the armor of the Abrams'. You are thinking of Chobam armor, which the Americans used on the original M1 Abrams. From the M1A1 onwards, however, they used a completely American depleted Uranium/hardened steel composite.
PS: I mean I've been researching all the MAJOR armies of the world. That was a typo. By major armies I mean China, Russia, the States, Britain, Israel, and other politically important nations.

The origonal abrams had old fashon british armor. But the MODERN abrams has depleted uranium, lead composits, and reactive plates (optional). Yes it has a german gun but almost everything about it is american. It has an american aiming computer. I believe that the leopard 2 is the best tank in the world. The abrams is second best. Leopard 2 is the worlds best tank.
However the Challenger 2 is the second best tank in the world. It's armour is unmatched. It can survive 12 RPG at close range and a anti tank missile and still function.

an M1A2 could theoretically go 120 mph but at 75, the treads start to fly off so if you stay at about 70 you should be fine for a while.

The US is indeed superior: if you watch videos of American ARMY not Marine troops in training, you'll see that. If you read the training regimen for the American troops, you'll see that I am correct.

The Iraqis operated the export variant of the T-72, granted it was not as good as the Soviet variant but it could still ruin your day with the right aim. and the us military educates its tankers and soldiers to a high degree. They knew what they were talking about.

You have to remember that numbers sometimes do count in a battle. During WW2, the Germans had the best tanks (aside from the Russians). The way the US Army defeated the German tanks was to mass their Shermans against a single Panzer or Tiger. And it took quite a few rounds of Sherman fire to take out a Tiger or a Panzer. Never, ever underestimate the enemy. If you can manage that, you're one step closer to winning.

Best Iraqi tank was called Asad Babil, a somewhat visual T-72 lookalike, but technically is was by far inferior T-72, it comes closer to T-62.

McMaster is going to be a Brigadier General soon! He served as CO of either the 2nd or 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment in OIF as a full Colonel, and at one point was appointed to the staff of General David Petraeus. The guy is a hell of a Soldier, and I wouldn't be surprised to see him reach the top positions in the United States Army in the coming years. I wrote a paper about the Battle of 73 Easting in college, and I enjoyed watching this video...Thanks for posting it!

Tanks in such a defensive posture as the Iraqis had, have all the tactical advantages-ALL! M1's have better optics, main gun with more max effective range and the best armor.
