@TheCatsLastWord Most people who you come across you do not talk to and your only interaction with them is a shared glance. Your interpretation of that person is based on physical appearance. Then when you do meet someone and interact with them, you will naturally associate their behavior and personality with all of the people who look similar to them whom you did not interact with in the past. It is your brains way of quantifying and 'giving character' if you will to all of those strangers.

My interpretation would be more correct... which is associating the way someone dresses with their social status/behavior. Racism is a learned behavior, it is not "natural" otherwise animals would be "racist"... and that is not the case. I don't see white dogs discriminating against black dogs. A good example is China and racism. Chinese people were not racist at all
@TheCatsLastWord Identifying people based on appearance is typical when there is a large population and no means to share more complex experiences, limiting the scope in with we group ourselves, thus we do based on appearance. If we lived in a small group or village, we could more easily find other basis in which to identify ourselves and each other. Although if that were the case, it would be unllikely that there would be much diveristy in ethnicity or race.

@summerchick621 I dont know if this is relevant to the conversation but I have all sorts of friends of different nationalities, it basically comes down to how a person is brought up to view people in the world. I'm the only "black" kid in my immediate family but I wasnt taught to judge people by their race. It was only until I came out into the "real world" I started notice and judge people by their race/sterotypes. Its sad and I totally dispise doing that..it's not right..

Then when you do meet someone and interact with them, you will naturally associate their behavior and personality with all of the people who look similar to them whom you did not interact with in the past. People share many commonalities, but because appearance is the most frequently occuring interpretation, it is the fundamental basis of association. It is most natural to quantify and qualify people based on appearance rather than morals, pleasures, beliefs etc. Racism is extremely natural.

My interpretation would be more correct... which is associating the way someone dresses with their social status/behavior. Racism is a learned behavior, it is not "natural" otherwise animals would be "racist"... and that is not the case. I don't see white dogs discriminating against black dogs. A good example is China and racism. Chinese people were not racist at all

If we lived in a small group or village, we could more easily find other basis in which to identify ourselves and each other. Although if that were the case, it would be unllikely that there would be much diveristy in ethnicity or race.

I'm the only "black" kid in my immediate family but I wasnt taught to judge people by their race. It was only until I came out into the "real world" I started notice and judge people by their race/sterotypes. Its sad and I totally dispise doing that..it's not right..
