  • For those wishing to read a more in depth review go to Building Science Digest, document BSD-149.

  • Closed cell polyurethane foam has been the standard in all high ER refrigerated appliances and buildings for over fifty years and is now poised to be the major contributing factor in reducing not only energy consumption by buildings (68% of all fossil fuels consumed), but also in reducing Green house gasses from this consumption (72%). By insulating the entire envelope ( attic roof also and crawl space) the average 40% loss of duct work will now remain within the climate controlled area.

  • Because there is no standard on the amount of widow or door area on a building the ability of the insulated area to be a factor in air loss and vapor intrusion is limited to the ability of the Architect and Engineer. If the envelope is sealed the ability of the HVAC system to control humidity and fresh air uptake is now a science instead of being left up to the random velocity dynamics of the atmosphere( wind).

  • Most standards relating to fresh air uptake in the building envelope were derived before the advent of non-permeable insulation and vapor drive materials. The major reason for this

"venting" was to passively remove( never worked) pathogens( spores) created by common indoor molds such as Aspergillus, Pinicillium and Stachybotrys. Most of these were created because of the high amount of vapor drive transfer through the stud wall filled with materials such as fiberglass and cellulose.

  • @BigDsunburst53

Energy efficiently within the envelope is based on three principals, air loss and gain 50%, vapor drive in and out of the envelope 25% and ETM 25% ( R,C,K,and U factors). Because air and moisture cannot permeate CC foam ( ASTM-E-96, ASTM- 283,2178) you are automatically increasing your ER by 75%. CC foam having an R- factor of 5.8 or better adds even more to the overall er of the envelope.

  • 40% of your conditioned air leaks out of your house because 30% of it IS REQUIRED TO. Unless you dont' want fresh air in your house? If you get less than @ 30% of your air cycled every hour, your house is now a health hazard, dangerous to live it. Hope you guys mention that when your "sealing" that house up tight like you're not supposed to. btw When 60% of the avg home energy bill is heating and cooling, the only way to save 60% would be to shut of your heater or a/c nice try though!snake oil!
