Psychonauts is definitely one of my favorite games, the artwork, the concept, the leveling system, the combat, the puzzles, the storyline, it was all golden. While i usually think ol' benny boy is a bit harsh on his critiques, im glad to see he recognizes a great game every now and again, even if it does come with a health scoop of delicious cynicism.

@Idlevice I doubt it, the game does have MAJOR problems that are really hard to overlook. As fun as it is, it can be finished very quickly and has little replay value once it's over.

@clonetrooper250 I think it's down to my love of Schafer's previous work and this was his first attempt at conventional gameplay. I didn't even like Mario 64, Tomb Raider, Spyro etc. so a first attempt at a genre I hate (3D platforming) was probably doomed from the outset. I still liked the story and characters but I was just desperate to enjoy it at my own pace without all the irritating jumps and... well, without the actual game, I guess.

I'd only vote for a sequel if Tim Schaefer and Doublefine PLUS most of the original core crew were deeply involved for the entirety of its production.

This is my favorite game of all time, and it's good to see that not only have people heard of Psychonauts (so I don't have to say "You probably haven't heard of it, but it's awesome."), but we have a normally caustic critic that hates almost everything he plays acknowledge the fact that it's a great game. It feels good to know that I discovered a game that is good on it's own, rather than being "good" because it's the sequel to "BloodGoreDeath Reloaded."

The procedure you describe at the start of the video was used as one of the milder punishments for speaking out of turn, forgetting to do you homework, being late, etc... etc... from 1st-12th grade in my school.... Harsher punishments involved pulling down your socks and a whip of stinging nettles... Also doing squats until you legs gave out. One particularly uppity 10 year old was made to do them until he collapsed and had to be rushed to the hospital.

@davidwie My guess is that you pinched the end of your fingers instead of pinching at the first knuckle. Doing the former allows your fingers to touch by rotating at the first knuckle, whereas doing the later doesn't allow for that.

I remember hearing about psychonauts. i also remember being intrigued by it. The other thing I remember is that when it came out I was merely a poor little middle schooler who still relied on his parents for video games. Now not that they saw it, hated it, and forbid it, I didn't have one of the "consoles that mattered." Now that I'm old anough and "have a console that matters" I still probably won't get it because I grew up into a broke college kid who relies on money for video games.

I didn't like Psychonauts because of the gameplay and art style, but I do admit that I wish I were more patient as a child, because I do remember the characters and writing to be good. Video games for me back then were all about instant gratification, and I couldn't be bothered to think about characters unless they were carrying more steel than Pittsburgh puts out in a year. If I could try again I would but alas, I doubt that day will ever come.
