I was just looking at random cities in China and looked up this one and I'm amazed it's almost as big as New York City, but yet hardly anyone outside of Asia has probably ever heard of it. It's sad how such great cities go un-noticed by so much of the world. Well, it appears to be a great city and I wish you Shenyang people the best of my wishes.

The history of Shenyang is absolutely amazing. Anyway. there is a Starbucks (Xing Ba Ke KaFei) just down the street from the Mao statue.

I'm no fan of Mao, but the sculpture at the base of the statue of peasants, workers and soldiers at the base of the statue is a beautifully composed and very moving piece of sculpture..

Oh yeah? I was there last year, and 07 for teaching gig. When I was there it was not July--it was Nov, and Dec--through the spring. How cold was it? Try -50F. And it stays like that (sorta) till end of Jan. And yes I ate at lao bian!! Good stuff! But next trip will be in Feb...I'm staying away from frigid months. Can't wait to see ZhongJie street. again.

This video was made by a hotel and resort company, so it does not show the true culture of Shenyang. This shows you the rich tourist version (the most expensive hotels, restaurants, shopping areas, etc.), not the real Shenyang that you will remember for a lifetime. If anyone wants to truly experience Shenyang, get on a bus, get off at a random stop, and just go into shops and cheap restaurants. Talk to local people, shop in tiny shops where you can bargain. Only then you'll see the real Senyang.
