I'd go out on a limb here and say that discrimination against anyone for just about anything is plain wrong. Notable exceptions here would be discriminating against someone who was a recidivist and unapologetic infringer on someone else's right to live peacefully. This, however, leaves a person's religious beliefs wide open. It's about time that the religious indoctrination of children is recognised as failing this important distinction.
It's just not right to compare so called discrimination based on how fat you are with discrimination based on race or those other factors, fat is something you can actually change and what's more there's an ever-growing history of evidence showing links between fat and the things fat jokes are made about whereas there's virtually none for the jokes based on race or religion.
Fantastic add!! Really shows how some people are two faced. They are horrified at discriminating remarks based on race, religion or sexual preference but think it's fine based on body mass. Really well done to the guys who came up with it.
@johncawks23 my understanding is that it's a holocaust reference, some of those tortured were burnt alive, and thus they went 'up the chimney', quite a grim joke really
i can see what they "we trying to do" but it failed. The line "Discrimination comes in all shapes and sizes" isn't paid off here because those people look like the people who say those horrible jokes. Now if it was a priest, a kid, an old granny, etc--it might be going the right way. but i just think this was an agency trying to be clever and it failed. Bad ad.
@squirttle92 ye i know i just put my words wrongly - This isnt a very good ad. I can see why they didnt allow it due to the offensive comments - Thats how it meant to be put :)
@sonycans I was overweight and treated badly, but I changed how I was treated by exercising 30-60 minutes a day and lowering my caloric intake. Now this isn't an instant or easy fix, but is a proven method to ensure weight loss and change. If prejudiced against because of your faith, the country you're born, your sexuality, the colour of your skin, or your sex...? You can't change who your born as, why should you? We comment on a smokers unhealthy and costly addictions. Why not the overweight?
No person should treat you in that fashion because of your condition. You said it yourself that to lose weight was not at all easy and that is why you see people such as Kirsty Alley etc. that are thin then fat.
Prejudice against fat people is like prejudice against people wearing glasses meaning a medical condition and I hold my stance that it is on par with racial discrimination.
Because you're are now thin doesn't mean that everyone can be thin.
@sonycans Obesity isn't a "condition" it is a a way of life. Being short sighted or long sighted are not things that are not in your control, your lifestyle is. Now remember we are talking about the obese through diet here, not people that have water retention issues or glandular problems, etc that can balloon someone's size. I know that food is an addiction but is so is smoking and both are very unhealthy. To think that it is the same as something that can't be changed is just plain ludicrous.
@speebyda - Does that give you the right to be discriminating against these people or belittle them as some fools because they cannot control themselves. Do you belittle people who wet themselves?
I agree that it can be changed however it is not that easy as putting down that food and just because you have won it, talk to me in 10-years time and see if you have really won the war on obesity.
People are obese for a variety of reasons and a diet or change of lifestyle won't always work
@elsiexoxx A 'civilised' person wouldn't laugh at a joke about overweight people, call them 'fat' and tell them they 'should make a fucking hard effort to stop it'.
There is always a medical reason for weight gain. Even if it is mental. Don't see them as people who are lazy and pathetic but rather why have they gotten there. some people drink alcohol, some take drugs and others eat food to get through life. Who are you to judge. You do not know their position. grow a brain, stop being a biggot
@kerrrebecca I personally believe the main reason for obesity is addiction to food, and addiction is also a mental condition as well as a spiritual condition.
I believe that although there are some disgusting and offensive 'jokes' here, it should ultimately bring the viewer to the conclusion that teasing ANYONE about ANYTHING is wrong, regardless of their race, culture, religion or shape.
Just an fyi: this ad was made as part of an australian show called the gruen transfer. The segment that this ad comes from is about making an ad for a topic that is unpalatable... other ads made include compulsory euthanasia, invading a neighbouring country, support child labour, etc.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
and also, there are at least some legitimate reasons as to why fat people are discriminated against. they eat more than the fair quota of food, violating an implicit rule.
terrible. to even remotely compare some fat bitch's self esteem to jewish and black persecution is completely ridiculous and pretty appalling. the people that made these ads are probably retarded buffaloes.
@hoenderdosis Even though you made this comment 4 months ago, I just had to say I lol'd hard. 'Retarded buffaloes'. It's funny, but you also raise a good point..
I think this advert does more to promote the intolerance of others through satire than anything else. I can remember at least 2 of the jokes verbatim but can only vaguely remember what the "moral lesson" at the end was. The production team were trying to do the right thing but failed in my opinion.
Well even Marilyn Monroe would be written off as a 'fat chick' nowadays. People's acceptance of different sizes is pretty narrow now, compared to before. People are fickle.
Me, I prefer to judge people not on their appearance, but on their intelligence and the sum of their actions. I don't care if someone is fat. That doesn't necessarily make them a bad person. After all, fat people can always lose weight, but people like @Sotanath87 will be stupid for life.
people's perception of what makes a girl a 'fat chick' is pretty extreme. I'll go for the one with a little softness over a visible ribcage and flat butt any day.
how fat is "Fat"? Consider the bodymass index I'm a lilttle over the obese line, but I don't feel fat. Yet when I see someelse the same size as me, I make fun of them, and feel bettter abt myself. But when the table is turned I feel the hurt when they laugh back at me. Doesnt all Fat people share these characters of mine? I dont blame ya for the prejudice, cuz that would create a double standard judging from mmy own actions.
People are saying why should be proud to be fat. What about those muscle bound guys and girls at the gym. For arguments sake lets forget about the ones on roids. I know a lot of fat people who are going to out live them. They are destroying their body and putting massive strain on their heart. Go pick on them.
For the record I am obese. Also for the record people of "normal" weight don't like it when I out run, cycle, swim or hike them. Just cause your healthy doesn't mean your healthy.
you can deliver many messages by using shock as the primary driver of an ad. but is it right to do so? having a good intention doesn't necessarily make it okay. i think the ad lowers our social standards.
What like the little kids in Africa? Affluent first world women aren't lttle kids in Africa, bro. They can afford an apple a day to keep the jeering away.
@asdfers It's not just a matter of riches, but also of time and dedication, which doubles if it's actually about getting thin. There's much more to obesity than Eat = Get Fat; when you eat infrequently, the metabolism slows down and the body enters "starvation mode" in which it stores as much fat as it can.
Which brings us to point one - that they have no dedication because they're lazy slobs. Waugggh I don't have the time to exercise but do have the time to sit around watching youtubes.
@asdfers Actually, no. As anyone will tell you, when I say "dedication" I do mean DEDICATION. As in, getting your entire life revolving around losing weight. If we're going to call people lazy for not doing that, we might as well call them lazy for not having a physics degree and not becoming world-famous millionaire businessmen...
Can't blame the ABC for not airing this, although tops effort for allowing it to be our decision as to whether we view it or not online. My curiosity would've kept me awake all night wondering what ad they had made, now i know that perhaps they went a tad too far...Im gay and the whole faggot joke didnt bother me, but the jew one kinda did...being gay is hard, but 4 jews... knowing ur relatives were burnt alive and/or gassed & tortured then having sum1 make a direct joke about it is just sad.
hmmm I see why the ABC barred this ad... it did what it wanted to do - but frankly, it's inappropriate.
comments saying - people need to get a sense of humour and people get offended about everything - doesn't mean its right...
but at the same time i appreciate its not censored, as the ABC put a temporary website up for it and people can still view it on youtube etc if they want to.
I hate the "but being fat is unhealthy" argument. There's a ton of "normal" weight people who are just as unhealthy, they just have faster metabolisms, or, they don't eat that much, but what they do eat is junk. In fact it's a very small percent of the population who truly are healthy. Some people need to get of their fucking high horses.
@woobia Your argument is seriously weak. True, plenty of normal weight people r not as healthy as they should but the point is that being fat immediately translates to bad health. Saying it's ok sends the wrong message because it's NOT. Every 1 should be encouraged to be slim. ALL fat people are unhealthy and being overweight has many adverse lifestyle/health effects. Being slim doesn't automatically mean good health but it is a requirement of being healthy. Be slim, eat well, exercise etc
@andrewstylesable When exactly in my comment (not argument) did I say that being fat was okay? All I'm saying is that some so called "normal weight" people, should quit the attitude of superiority, when they are just as unhealthy as the overweight people.
@woobia okay fair enough, u have a gripe with the superiority complex. But to say you hate the "being fat is unhealthy" argument of this discussion is expressing that this statement does not sit right with you. As for comparing being fat with being slim and also unhealthy? It's a lot easier to be ignorant of your health when you don't have clear phsycial indicators staring you in the face. And where did you get this fact about the small % of the world who is healthy anyway? "Fact"?
@woobia you are really stupid. Being fat is unhealthy. It is not an argument or point of view it is a FACT. It directly translates to more diabetes, hypertension, gout, osteoarthritis, gallstones along with increasing the incidence of certain cancers (plus more), all other things being equal.
@lautsprecherz It is. However, shaming fat people isn't helping. You can't hate someone for their own good. (If anything, it makes me want to get even fatter just to spite the haters.)
I love this ad. It came across doing exactly what was asked of them. Yes people may have been offended by this but, there is nothing you can say today in regards to any type of person/group/race/culture without someone complaining and being upset. Its part of life.
Look - you don't even have to exercise - simply don't eat as much. Body mass does not come from nowhere, and (almost) everyone can survive on 2000 Kcalories per day. Sure, some people will lose the weight more slowly and especially those living a sedentary lifestyle aren't going to magically become healthy, but biologically speaking there is absolutely no way you can maintain 150+ kilos on any reasonable diet.
Yes, discrimination is bad and all, but please be healthy - for all of our wallets.
@EvilMoG68 You don't take into account the psychology. It is easy to say to eat less - but food addiction is a real thing.and VERY hard to break for some people, especially binge eaters.
@solomunn2008 1) Black people are stereotypically criminals, so if black women stop having kids, crimes will be reduced. 2) Some communities hate poofs, therefore the idea of someone drowning one would be funny to them. 3) Hitler gassed jews, then burned them crematoriums, so they 'went up' the chimney. Hope that heps
Why should someone feel proud to be unhealthy? I think there are distorted messages on both end of the scale in the media. We should be praising women who are healthy in whatever form they come, not waifs or 'fat'. I think this 'fat pride' is almost as bad as the lynching of magazines for showing unhealthily slim women. While I don't think unhealthy people should be made to feel bad about everything in their lives and total failures, I think it is wrong to make them proud of their choices.
@mpscats360 thanks for the heads up, I actually watched this after watching gruen. Just cause it's fake doesn't mean it can't start a dialogue :-) Certainly got me thinking!
@sassyfras000 You are 100% right. You can say to a fat person: "it's unhealthy to be too fat or too thin" But they will only hear half the sentence. It's easer to take offence than take responsibility.
@sassyfras000 yeah you're right. but you do realise the segment is about advertising things that arent really things that are right, like one time they did "joining australia and newzealand" like honestly, thats never going to happen. its a joke segment. dont take it too serious :)
The joke is based on the historically disproportional representation of blacks in crime statistics comparative to other demographics and thus by having an abortion they would be able to ‘fight crime.’
On a side note it’s good that you didn’t understand the joke since it does indicate that racial prejudices are becoming less apparent because frankly any form of discrimination is unfounded and unnecessary in modern society.
@5hutupl1nda The odd thing is I think by pulling it I think it's made it more effective. If they aired it on Gruen it would have been just another joke ad like the rest. We'd have had a quiet chuckle at the end when we realised where it was going and that's about it. Because they pulled it and gave it to us online where it can be freely viewed it has turned it into a serious ad. Now instead of being a bit of a joke it's a real message. Also the fact it was pulled ads to it's viral capability.
@alienmode im not sure where you are from, but obviously from a place, where education is nil and people talk before they think. if they have the ability to think anyway. congratulations, you're an idiot. you're the majority. im not having a go at you because i am an Australian, im not nationalist at all, and could agree with some of the argument you put forward if only it wasnt so stupid and genralised. congradulations, thats was the best genralisation i have heard in a long while.
@Anochrist no im actually really smart.. smarter than you in fact, id bet my life on it. australians are wicked fucking dumb -- what else would you expect from an island full of people britain didnt want? its not a "genralisation" its just a fact, faggot
@alienmode Right, so you're smart, but not smart enough to use punctuation, other than a full stop, or capitalisation ? I know I'm doing a disservice to my country (New Zealand) by defending Australians, but what you said is unacceptable.
@Bonald1101 Well you're on the internet now: on YouTube. You're not writing a book or a term paper. Most of the people who inhabit this community that you are currently mentally shitting in, BONALD, have come to the consensus that punctuation, grammar, spelling, etc., are unimportant, and that niggling over them actually make you look like a little fag instead of like some brainy hero. So take your Strunk & White, and your faggy little attitude, and go watch some more YouTube poops!
@alienmode I am fully aware I'm on the internet, and I want to present myself as a kind person. If you don't want to do the same, ALIENMODE, that's not my problem.
@Bonald1101 What's kind about a nation full of racist British criminals? Genocide against the Aborigines wasn't enough; the Australian scum continue to this day to be backwards, racist, and hateful. They regularly don blackface and portray colored peoples as cartoonish savages on television, and in movies and commercials. The indigenous people, the one's who are left over, get dirty looks and hushed comments when they show their brown faces in the "civilized" white cities.
@Bonald1101 Maybe next time you stick up for somebody you should make sure you're not sticking up for a bunch of ignorant, slavering, slack-jawed fuckfaces (Aussies). But don't worry everybody thinks you are a kind person, just a retarded kind person.
@Bonald1101 Yes you fat faggot. I've been to almost every first world country and Australia is by far the most fucked up. Maybe South Africa is worse in terms of racism... but if you're talking about racism in first world countries, Australia gets the grand prize.
@alienmode I'm at a loss for words. If I dislike something, I keep it to myself. Maybe you should do the same, instead of yelling it out on the internet and looking like a complete dick.
@Bonald1101 You're at a loss for words because your brain has atrophied from disuse. It's a condition that affects many people; don't be ashamed. As for your inane comment about what I should do if I dislike something -- are you daft? Imagine if everybody kept quiet when they disliked something. It would be like some sort of bizarro world dark ages with everybody lavishing compliments on shitty work. I shouldn't even need to point out the hypocrisy of you commenting on what you dislike...
@Bonald1101 You've really gone and said some stupid, stupid things tonight, BONALD. I really think you should try to adhere to your "keeping quiet about things I dislike" policy, and just shut the fuck up for now. Concentrate on getting your mental faculties back in order. Start with some light reading, maybe some children's books or nursery rhymes, then work your way up to coloring books, magazines with lots of pictures, and maybe one day even young adult fiction. I believe in you.
@alienmode I would claim that I have read Richard Dawkins and Bill Bryson at the age of 14, and I have, but you wouldn't believe me, as you're probably not intelligent enough to know who they are. I know I haven't strictly adhered to my keeping quiet about things I dislike policy, but I just can't let this sort of thing go past me.
@Bonald1101 Now you're just mincing about and trying to slop words together. Dawkins and Bryson are good but you'll need to be a bit less faggoty for anyone to take you seriously in life.
@Anochrist I think it's because you keep pinching our icons and claiming them as your own... Only joking. I really have nothing against Australians, I even have relatives there.
Wow, I was not expecting that kind of ad. All of those jokes have a great tone and the whole pace is really effective.. The lack of colour works, but the logo at the end didn't impress me. I don't see why it wouldn't be suitable for broadcast, since it doesn't show any of the offensive parts as positive. You might as well ban TAC ads for talking about drunk driving.
These are all pretty confronting, and while it's not right to discriminate due to someone's belt size, it's a fact that it will happen over and over again.
NOBODY, should be proud of being fat , much like NOBODY should be proud of being skinny to the point of hurting yourself. Discriminating against someone due to Skin colour or race is totally unexceptable. But it's not the same as your waist line, that just comes down to diet....and healthy lifestyle.
@Jaguar1M There's a difference between discriminating based on poor choices and discriminating based on the unpreventable. With some people, being overweight is perfectly healthy they are naturally of that size, just as how some people are naturally underweight. It's who that person is. It's not just a matter of diet.
Anyways, if it's a choice, does that mean you should discriminate based on religion? Is being Jewish something you shouldn't be proud of?
This is a great ad. I can see how it would offend some, but the real problem is that it doesn't meet the Gruen Transfer's challenge. The challenge was selling Fat Pride, not selling an anti-prejudice viewpoint in general.
@wutzernutzer I disagree, I feel the touched the topic on a bigger picture. It grants the people that are picked on a means to identify that they're not alone in being treated unfairly for no reason more than mere randomness, this in turn may help them feel better about themselves because they know they're not alone.
Isn't the main point that race and gender can't be chosen? We shouldn't mock race or gender because quite frankly we don't have a choice. For our weight, however, we do. The point is, barring a serious medical condition, you can choose your weight. Saying we shouldn't be prejudiced to fat people is like saying we shouldn't be prejudiced to smokers or drug abusers.
You know, people have been saying for literally CENTURIES that Homosexuality is a 'choice'. Should they not receive rights too? After all, they clearly 'made the choice' to be gay, christianagendaetc.etc.
@MattyRys That is also incorrect, I eat more than anyone I know but am underweight, I can't gain weight no matter how I try, I get called scrawny wherever I go. I have friends who eat half as much but weigh twice as much, we don't get to decide our metabollic weights, being overweight is often not a choice.
@MattyRys I thought the prejudice against smokers and drug abusers had more to do with the damage they cause others. Things like secondhand smoke or getting into a car accident that a sober driver could avoid and corrupting stupid youths who then cause more damage. Not so with being fat. Besides, I find prejudice makes some people defiant and makes others just turn to their vice for comfort, so there's no good purpose to it and those who prejudge are just being mean for the sake of being mean.
I'm not going to start a holocaust debate but it was 6 'million' jews (+millions of homosexuals, gypsies and the disabled) that were murdered in the holocaust, not thousands. But that point aside, while this ad was flawed for comparing mass genocide to hurtful and damaging jokes about one's weight- it still draws light on the subject to hopefully show people that none of these 'jokes' are ok.
Hating on someone fat is not on par with killing thousands of Jews, or wishing homosexuals dead. That isnt the point. The jokes are confronting so that by the last one, the viewer wonders "What's next?" What could possibly be worse? The fat joke is an anti climax, but it cements the concept. It attempts to make what people might normally see as mild (or funny) as a form of hatred and bigotry.
I understand that this person was trying to get accross the seriousness of this issue. However i don't think the discrimination of obese people can be compared to the holocaust.
I think the ad doesn't work because you are just so stunned by the first joke that it is hard to process the rest.
I concur. They should have found a way to relate the types of bigoted thoughts people have about fat people with bigoted thoughts of a similar nature aimed at other oppressed groups. To say something like, "I wouldn't hate gays so much if they'd just be straight" stems from the same strand of bigotry that "I'd stop being cruel to fat people if they'd just lose weight" comes from, in my opinion. Comparing fat jokes to the holocaust or actual hate crimes is pushing it way too far.
Meh, if people don't realise this was deliberately not broadcast to create controversy to get people to watch the show... its a show about advertising for fuck sake.
Peoples, check out Upright Citizens Brigade Fat Nazi episode. Actually funny.
oh god. these jokes go too far. i see what the creator is trying to do though, trying to equate discriminating fat people, which is usually accepatble against things which arent acceptable, like racism. so discriminating fat ppl is just as bad as the other.
but don't you think it went a bit too far to reach his point? im sure there was some other way to get his point across without offending others. legitimate thinking, bad handling.
i don't get the first "joke" though. i don't understand???
how to black women fight crime? they get abortions. Saying all black people are criminals and not allowing them to be born is fighting crime...pretty simple really
I think the person who did this add is really crap at his job, if all he could come up with was this hurtful and nasty add, then maybe you are in the wrong business, there are many tallented, creative people who could have made the same point without such disregard for others feelings.
Yeah, I know there were no fat people lynchings. But, fat jokes ARE on par with racism though BECAUSE it is a form of discrimination. To not see it that way is turning a blind eye to something that is prevalent in dividing people through hatred.
I'm not saying it's genocide, but I am saying it is a form of bigotry. We live in a culture that tells us that fat is unattractive.... to them.
Right or wrong, it's still prejudice. Fat people are still people. They're human. They deserve some dignity.
@LaBiggCheeks Obesity is often a genetic trait. It can be a difficult battle to fight, and not simply a result of 'unhealthy living'. No matter the reason for obesity, it's important to feel comfortable within your skin. Know that you are worthwhile no matter your size. Reasons for weight loss shouldn't be rooted in vanity. I believe in healthy living, but making "fat" people feel insecure isn't the answer. ALL people need a healthy lifestyle. Who else has that skinny friend who eats like crap?
I don't understand how genocide and eugenics jokes compare to a fat joke centered on the sexual attractiveness of a fat woman. I think the first 3 jokes were X4 times more offensive because they are a malicious, violent intent.
Whereas mocking a fat woman as sexually unappealing is not even in the same category of offensiveness.
Probably not. So if that's the case, how can you tell me what's offensive and what is not.
It's all perspective. The first 3 jokes came from a mean spirited frame of mind, and the last one wasn't? On what grounds? Wasn't violent enough? It still belittles an entire segment of society.
You don't think that's wrong?
Laughing at humor is one thing, but laughing AT someone to instill inferiority?
If you can't see the difference between belittling the holocaust or making a genocide joke and making fun of a woman who is unattractive then I do not know what to say.
The joke in this case was centered around fat women being unattractive. Its insensitive but its not necessarily far from the truth. Most men do not find a 300lb woman attractive...I'm sorry. Yes, its wrong to belittle such a woman. But comparing that to making a holocaust joke is totally off balance.
And you have a right to your opinion. Personally, I think making any comparison to genocide is foolish. However, I stand by my beliefs.
I would find a 300lb woman attractive, I guess I'm not most men. I really have nothing else to tell you. The genocide thing is just too much to get past.
It is important to remember that people do kill themselves over things like weight discrimination though, and to me, that is a problem because it's just as easy to NOT be a dick about it .
I'm not negating the fact that fat jokes can hurt an overweight person's feelings and that yes, shape discrimination is wrong. But is a fat joke on par with anti-semitism or racism?
There was never a fat person holocaust or fat people lynchings in Arkansas. Thats a fact.

There is always a medical reason for weight gain. Even if it is mental. You do not know their position. grow a brain, stop being a biggot

After all, fat people can always lose weight, but people like @Sotanath87 will be stupid for life.
dunneh 11 months ago
people's perception of what makes a girl a 'fat chick' is pretty extreme.

@asdfers Or because they can't afford any better. Obesity is complex. Did you know, for instance, that one could actually starve oneself fat?

What like the little kids in Africa? Affluent first world women aren't lttle kids in Africa, bro. They can afford an apple a day to keep the jeering away.
asdfers 1 year ago
@asdfers It's not just a matter of riches, but also of time and dedication, which doubles if it's actually about getting thin. There's much more to obesity than Eat = Get Fat; when you eat infrequently, the metabolism slows down and the body enters "starvation mode" in which it stores as much fat as it can.
Lioyd1rving 1 year ago
@Lioyd1rving
Which brings us to point one - that they have no dedication because they're lazy slobs. Waugggh I don't have the time to exercise but do have the time to sit around watching youtubes.

I hate the "but being fat is unhealthy" argument. There's a ton of "normal" weight people who are just as unhealthy, they just have faster metabolisms, or, they don't eat that much, but what they do eat is junk. In fact it's a very small percent of the population who truly are healthy. Some people need to get of their fucking high horses.
woobia 1 year ago 2

"Fact"?

Charlyfied 1 year ago
Look - you don't even have to exercise - simply don't eat as much. Body mass does not come from nowhere, and (almost) everyone can survive on 2000 Kcalories per day. Sure, some people will lose the weight more slowly and especially those living a sedentary lifestyle aren't going to magically become healthy, but biologically speaking there is absolutely no way you can maintain 150+ kilos on any reasonable diet.
Yes, discrimination is bad and all, but please be healthy - for all of our wallets.

While I don't think unhealthy people should be made to feel bad about everything in their lives and total failures, I think it is wrong to make them proud of their choices.

how to black chicks fight crime?
They have abortions?!?!?!

jawbraeka 1 year ago
@jawbraeka

We need brutally confronting adverts like this to tackle bigotry in Australia. A shame ABC pulled it from the show.
5hutupl1nda 1 year ago
@5hutupl1nda The odd thing is I think by pulling it I think it's made it more effective. If they aired it on Gruen it would have been just another joke ad like the rest. We'd have had a quiet chuckle at the end when we realised where it was going and that's about it. Because they pulled it and gave it to us online where it can be freely viewed it has turned it into a serious ad. Now instead of being a bit of a joke it's a real message. Also the fact it was pulled ads to it's viral capability.

it wasnt that funny,,,but it wasnt that discrimantory either.
hiusmellnice 1 year ago
First off, I'm fat!
Jaguar1M 1 year ago
@Jaguar1M There's a difference between discriminating based on poor choices and discriminating based on the unpreventable. With some people, being overweight is perfectly healthy they are naturally of that size, just as how some people are naturally underweight. It's who that person is. It's not just a matter of diet.
Anyways, if it's a choice, does that mean you should discriminate based on religion? Is being Jewish something you shouldn't be proud of?

This is a great ad. I can see how it would offend some, but the real problem is that it doesn't meet the Gruen Transfer's challenge. The challenge was selling Fat Pride, not selling an anti-prejudice viewpoint in general.
wutzernutzer 2 years ago 2
@wutzernutzer I disagree, I feel the touched the topic on a bigger picture. It grants the people that are picked on a means to identify that they're not alone in being treated unfairly for no reason more than mere randomness, this in turn may help them feel better about themselves because they know they're not alone.
LeeAshen 1 year ago
Isn't the main point that race and gender can't be chosen? We shouldn't mock race or gender because quite frankly we don't have a choice. For our weight, however, we do. The point is, barring a serious medical condition, you can choose your weight. Saying we shouldn't be prejudiced to fat people is like saying we shouldn't be prejudiced to smokers or drug abusers.
MattyRys 2 years ago
You know, people have been saying for literally CENTURIES that Homosexuality is a 'choice'. Should they not receive rights too? After all, they clearly 'made the choice' to be gay, christianagendaetc.etc.
awesome87 2 years ago
@MattyRys That is also incorrect, I eat more than anyone I know but am underweight, I can't gain weight no matter how I try, I get called scrawny wherever I go. I have friends who eat half as much but weigh twice as much, we don't get to decide our metabollic weights, being overweight is often not a choice.
LeeAshen 1 year ago
@MattyRys I thought the prejudice against smokers and drug abusers had more to do with the damage they cause others. Things like secondhand smoke or getting into a car accident that a sober driver could avoid and corrupting stupid youths who then cause more damage. Not so with being fat. Besides, I find prejudice makes some people defiant and makes others just turn to their vice for comfort, so there's no good purpose to it and those who prejudge are just being mean for the sake of being mean.

Right or wrong, it's still prejudice. Fat people are still people. They're human. They deserve some dignity.

@TDevil01
fat isn't a race mate, therefore it's not racist. It's a prejudice yes but not a race.

@TDevil01 Really? fat can be helped. Race cannot. How can it possibly be on par? It cannot.

because discrimination can be helped too...

@LaBiggCheeks Not true. Obesity is a disease, with weight gain only a symptom

race and your sexual preferences are something that you can't change.
height of the body, you can't change either.. but the width of the body, that's completely up to you to manage and change.

This is genocide vs fat woman are sexually unattractive. Whats worse?
maddingo12 2 years ago
I don't understand how genocide and eugenics jokes compare to a fat joke centered on the sexual attractiveness of a fat woman. I think the first 3 jokes were X4 times more offensive because they are a malicious, violent intent.
Whereas mocking a fat woman as sexually unappealing is not even in the same category of offensiveness.
maddingo12 2 years ago
Says you. Are you a fat woman?
Probably not. So if that's the case, how can you tell me what's offensive and what is not.
It's all perspective. The first 3 jokes came from a mean spirited frame of mind, and the last one wasn't? On what grounds? Wasn't violent enough? It still belittles an entire segment of society.
You don't think that's wrong?
Laughing at humor is one thing, but laughing AT someone to instill inferiority?
That's just wrong.
IMHO

If you can't see the difference between belittling the holocaust or making a genocide joke and making fun of a woman who is unattractive then I do not know what to say.
The joke in this case was centered around fat women being unattractive. Its insensitive but its not necessarily far from the truth. Most men do not find a 300lb woman attractive...I'm sorry. Yes, its wrong to belittle such a woman. But comparing that to making a holocaust joke is totally off balance.
maddingo12 2 years ago 2
