It has never occurred to me that there are any similarties between Danny Boy and Söknuður, like Söknuður and You raise me up. Now I see there are some similarities but they are not at all the same song. You raise me up on the other hand is cearly imo a plagiarism of both Söknuður and Danny boy. The part which is not from Söknuður, the refrain, is from Danny Boy.
A few years ago I heard on Icelandic radio a song called Þú styrkir mig, an Icelandic version of You raise me up . First I thought this was Söknuður with new lyrics. Suddenly I relaized it was not Söknuður. Immdiately It was clear to me that one of the songs was a plagiarism of the other. This was a one time experience. I was so shocked by this discovery that I had an urge to write about it on an icelandic website.
Mate this song was made in the year 1997 josh groban and his gay friends stole this song and changed it sundnly they are very famos the did it in 2005
You don't know what you're speaking about. Groban's version is a COVER!!! The song is credited to Rolf Løvland and Brendan Graham. THEY "stole" parts of the melody from Söknuðu (plus the refrain from "Danny Boy") and published it as their own composition. The song was recorded by "Secret garden". An interpreter (Josh Groban, Westlife etc.) does not steal a song. The songwriters (Løvland and Graham) do. By the way, you must be pretty silly if you call David Foster a "gay friend" of Groban's.
How do you figure in either way? There's only one part of the verse that has the same musical qualities of "You Raise Me Up" and it's only remotely similar.
I love this song but for special reason. Vilhjalmur´s youngest son is my soninlaw. I know the story behind this song and I did meet Kirri his ex wife, to whom he wrote it after they split up. She moved to Sweden where she died in 2003. Of course this song were played at her funural and Hjalmar were singing. He looks like his father and he´s got that special voice as well. but doesn´t want to sing. There is another song by Vilhjalmur - Litill Drengur, written when Hjalmar was born in 1972.
DENNE SANGE LAGET jOHANN HELGASON CA 1974. jEG VET DET FOR HAN VAR GIFT MD MIN VENNINE PÅ ISLAND. BLE SUNGET I VILHJALMUR SN BEGRAVELSE I 1977!! BARE "BULLSHIT" Å SAMMENLIGNE DENNE SANGEN MED YOU RAIOSE ME UP!!!! dEN BLE IKKE LAGET FØR CA 25 ÅR SENERE!!
IKKE SMUS S TIL DENNE VAKRE SANGEN MED SÅNN EN TULLDISKUSJON!!!
Johann Helgason, the author of this song, has already sued Josh Groban for stealing his song. He got a team of experts to "inspect" the song and they determined that the songs are 97% alike.
Some of you say "I like Joshes version better" ... what do you mean? These are not the same songs folks, this song was written a long time ago, doesn't include any lyrics that Josh uses but is so alike in melody and chords it's not even funny!
maybe his manager told him the tune after hearing this and then josh groban wrote the song you raised me with out knowing about the Icelandic song and now the song writer of this song is suing josh groban for stealing it...... maybe he´s innocent.....just maybe...
no. You Raise Me Up is a cover version of a song by duo"Secret Garden". The music was written by Rolf Løvland, the lyrics by Brendan Graham. Frankly, THEY are the music thiefs. Apparently the world didn't notice that a similar song had already been written and so it was covered by Groban or Westlife. Some people may say that they don't like Groban's or Westlife's version, but they are no thiefs of this song. And: Mister Helgasson doesn't think Groban is stealer but lovland.
Learn Icelandic.. Then you would never write this again.. It's my favorite song (and I'm 16 and I listen to electronic music like techno, house etc. but it's still my favorite song.. Ever.)
Já það er ekki annað hægt að segja en þetta sé fallegasta lag allra tíma. Þegar þeir koma saman Jóhann Helgason og Vilhjálmur Vilhjálmsson þá er ekki nema von á því allra besta. Elskaðasta lag á Íslandi Jóhann er snillingur. Ég vil bara heyra það með Villa og engum öðrum.
Oh, and the guy who wrote "You raise me up" is from neighboring Norway? Now he's definitely guilty...being among the 1 percent of world's population who mighthave ever heard this song.
To your surprise, the guy from Norway "wrote" this song after living in Iceland for some months. He has also "wrote" other songs, that authors have thougt were theirs.
If you heard a song on the radio and you heard some tune you like. And then later dont know if it's from your own head or this song. Who's to blame? He writs music for a living. Thousends of tunes in his head. The rest of this song isn't any good anyway.
Anyway, no success for this song if it was published international before YRMU.

me too this song crack me up i like joshes virson better besides on some of the singing parts its not in the same notes i was humming the notes to u raise me up and on sum parts it sounds tottaly diffrent
this is the original song! the guy who "wrote" raise me up stole 97% of this song and put a little bit of other notes around it and he called it a new song so please don´t say josh groban is singing another version of this song! you should actually say that the stolen song you raise me up was the better song if you think so.....
Actually both this song and "you raise me up" are almost identical to the song "Danny Boy" that is an old song from Ireland, Scotland or somewhere in the UK. The chord procession is what makes them so similar.
a comparison video has been uploaded where 45 seconds of the most repeated tune in "You raise me up" is played in the right speaker and the "Söknuður" played in the left. [3w].video.google.c*om/videoplay?docid=-7667832936038955681&q
The dispute if the composers of "You raise me up" has borrowed from this song, is somewhat speculative. The problems nowadays is that "nothing is new under the sun", so it will happen more and more that songs will be similar. This song has some similarities, but not enough in my opinion. You have to know it when you listen.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
bull***! the only thing that's similar to you raise me up, is part of the verse... The chords are so general, and common that it is probably a thousand other songs that use the same chord successions...
Find another way of making money. Leeching of another mans success is simply low.
Great to have Soknudur up on YouTube. Vilhjalmur Vilhjalmsson wrote this beautiful lyric and Johann Helgason wrote the music back in the 70's. ... and unscrupulus persons 'borrowed' the music and published it as "You raise me up" made popular by Josh Groban. They even were 'inspired' with the lyric too and gave no credit! (Blogged about
We'll see about that in court. As "You raise me up" was written by the norwegian Rolf Løvland. And Helgason is now taking him to court claiming he stole the song from him.
Which in my oppinion is just rubbish.
"Oh noes, someone made a song that might sound like mine! SUE THEM FOR MILLIONS!" You'd think he was American.
You are absolutely right. This will most likely be fought out in court, and we will see how it pans out. Though I doubt the British judicators have the intrinsic feel Icelanders have of "You raise me up" that bears all the trademark of being nothing more then a re-edited musical version of Söknuður with a circumscribed wording of part of the original text in Icelandic.
