Sammy Lind, my old time fiddle teacher at camp in the summer told us but is fiddling with something and I missed the story. If you know, do tell. All I know is Ernie Carpenter composed it. I don't do it justice but I do really enjoy playing it.
I have been playing now June 2010 since Jan 2008. I wish I started earlier, but, it is enjoyable. I am a rank beginner...so, it is played much better by the players on utube. Thanks for your encouragement. kitsilanogal
@Mandolin1944 Ernie Carpenter grew up on the Elk River in West Virginia and his family had lived there since the late 1700's. They flooded the river and it took away his home and all of the land that his family had lived on for generations. He built a new house after his old one was destroyed and he wrote this song while sitting on his new front porch.

@Mandolin1944 No problem. There's a few people that play that song here on youtube and a few of them tell the story of what happened, so I just learned it from watching all of the elk river blues videos. It would be interesting to here it on mandolin, I actually just learned it on banjo last night, I might post it today. Check out ottlakerambler on youtube, he also has a fiddle version similar to kitsilanogal's of Elk River Blues. Looking forward to hearin' it on mandolin!
Thank you. It sounds much better with guitar backing the tune up. I am still a beginner but loving the instrument. So much to learn. I do love this tune though.
