That great guitar part in the second half is taken from the old song "Shortnin' Bread". When it begins chant in time "Mama's little baby loves shortnin' shortnin'. Mama's little baby loves shortnin' bread." It makes a happy song even happier!
I musta listened to this song a million times! :) haha Well, I don't know how many, but I still love it, and like I said in a reply to a comment, it's one of my all-time favorite songs. We miss you, Captain :(
Don didn't like the comparison to Dolphy. He said comparing him to Albert Ayler would be more accurate. and he was right. Dolphy's stuff referred strongly to formal music. Don's only discipline was the blues, and HOW!
lol 77 likes vs 2 dislikes!! - this is not a representative sample of the public. Most people didn't dare click on the freaky picture, and the two that clicked dislike were outta here pretty fast I bet....
ahahhahha one guy doesn't like this. call me cliche but that bull definitely missed the like button while dancing all fast and bulbous like. :) RIP don van vliet!
@KingOfWhiteTrash1 Thats exactly what I was thinking, can't wait to see Zappa and Beefheart in the afterlife they aren't ready for them up there....or down there
For the first 55 secs the demented bass is the only thing holds the song together, and you think, "Who the hell are these clowns?" Then it builds an ominous groove that makes you wonder if you might not actually be in the presence of musical genius, and when the guitar lick at 2:24 kicks in, quickly followed by a demonic sax straight from the nightmare of an adolescent Tom Waits dreaming about Dali, then you know you are indeed blessed to be in such exalted company.
@HolyFerdinand dumbass, more like enhancing & expanding every genre. go listen to, oh, i dunno, celine dion or phil collins. check out the bbc doc about beefheart on ytube. if u still feel the same way after, you're completely hopeless.
@HolyFerdinand my bad. i had just spent an hour defending beefheart with, or against, others. uugh. some folks just... well, you know. now, about phil.... what should we do? lol. for entertainment purposes, you may want to read my exchange with eloletenyi(whatever, close enough) on ytube's upload of ice cream for crows. worth it. may you remain fast & bulbous, sir. tapered also.

The words and lyrics are truly "out there". I'm sure the lyrics are available somewhere.

My favorite of the man. Who knew that an avant-garde track could be warm and moving at the same time?

The Captain exchanged the temporary for the eternal. Amazing work he left behind.
Your music will live on forever, Cap'n!
Quietly the rain played down on last of the ashes
Quietly the light played down on her lashes
She smiled 'n twisted she smiled 'n twisted
Hideously looking back at what once was beautiful
Playing naturally magically
