For interested viewers, an informed explanation of castrato history and sound, go to the website MaleSopranos and read the articles "An Amazing Life, Carlo Broschi Farinelli" and also "The High Male Voice, An Introduction."
Yes, the interesting thing is that this voice you actually hear is a syntheses made by combining the two separate voices of a male countertenor and a female soprano. It does take ones breath away... I agree!!! Zhu nin kuai le :].
u know i watched a progeam on castartos and as good a voice as this is it's nowhere near to wat a ture castrato sounds like. and we will never actualy know what exactly they sound like but the closest resembalnce that was created was nothing like that. any way seeing as the voice is actualy a womans im not serprised
The boy became THE Farinelli and the old man was his competition and that night... he realised that we wasn't THE best but second place. Damn!!! Rent that movie! IT'S fucling amazing !
Fortunately today, we have a few better trained "voi-blanc" females, countertenors, and rare male sopranos to sing these arias without having to artifically create them. A few male singers say that they wish they were castrati, but they can make their arguments themselves.
the most beautifull thing ever is the peacock unfolding the tail its the very essence of glory in that gilted background... that echo effect was more that used in farinelli's time
Yes, transsexuals all over the world choose to have surgery, but the issue there is gender versus biological sex. In the period of Farinelli castrati often came from poor homes and were sold in the hope that they would become famous and help their families(e.g. Senesino). Mid 1700s 4000(!) boys were castrated a year in Italy, those are the registered operations.
I'm glad this practice has stopped! It was a barbaric source of lovely myths, stories and music. I DO love this clip though.
(for riceey) Barbaric? Yes by today's thinking, even though some boys demanded to be made castrati. Keep in mind, however, that today thousands of males choose to be emascualted for different reasons. There are an estimated 10000 known transexuals in L.A. alone. India has 1 to 1 1/2 million eunuchs. Can we truly judge?
Glad "Farinelli" was made (only about 10% about the real Carol Broschi); however, the chosen voices were mediocre and inappropriate to approximate Farinelli's. They missed a fantastic chance of using the most beauty, clear, golden voices of the 20th century, soprano Gundula Janowitz and the young countertenor Andreas Scholl. Then the singing truly would have been wonderful. Hear the CD soundtrack for the full arias. The excerpts in the movie are 2/5 or less, and you miss the DaCapo intent.
maybe the most higher notes are singed by a woman but i know that there is not two persons singing at the same time it s impossible even for the best singers to sing in the same time that cleanly

that whole practice was barbaric considering hardly any of the castrati made it to the "big time".
