I would know, I used to suck on my next-door neighboor best friend's mom, when I was 7yrs old. I breastfed my DD for 21 months and weaned for the same reason as the twins' mom but we weaned gradually, and there was no trauma. I'd have never gone cold turkey like that. :(
That just breaks my heart, seeing those little ones crying for their mommy's milk. They just don't understand why they are denied that precious thing. Why this cold turkey style weaning? Why not reduce the number of feeds gradually?
I don't understand how breastfeeding can affect a sex life, or a marriage. I've never heard of that. It is also easier on the mother, since her body will get used to the gradual supply and demand of milk, etc. Engorgement is very painful and can lead to problems, unless she does manual expressional. I did this with both my children and it worked just fine for everyone.
The should have weaned the 'milk for anything other than food' a lot lot sooner. While I get that breastfeeding is more than just feeding your child, you as a parent should also teach your child to find other ways to feel secure, to have a cuddle without whipping out your breast, for your child to learn how to fall asleep without it, etc. etc.

cold-turkey is the absolute WORST way to wean!!! you SLOWLY decrease the times and length of nursing until all night time feedings are done, then decrease until its only a wake up and go to sleep thing. then only after the kids are comfortable do you stop. even after you've decided that you've ended it takes a week or two with the odd time nursing at bed times before the child stops completly. one doesnt have to traumatize their baby! to wean!!
I know from experence Ive nursed 3 babies now and nursed my older two after the year mark against my familys wishes. this movie has a good message, but is showing it in a bad way. they are showing the extreem instances of breastfeeding; making people who dont see it often to it feel uncomfortable, then showing them heartbraking weaning. this is counterproductive!!! it will hinder any good there people!! its showing reasons WHY its still not a common thing in many countries.

I personally don't think breastfeeding is necessary to such extreme ages. It's not that common that I'm aware of, in my country. I don't plan to breastfeed any past 2, for sure. Maybe not even that long. But it was an interesting documentary, anyway.
I wonder if it would be better to start weaning earlier, so it can be a little slower process, and not such a huge deal? I'm actually finding this very interesting, never would've thought I would have. It's really making me consider breastfeeding a little longer. When I have my baby, in February, that is. :)

Oh and F.Y.I., breastfeeding can result in pleasurable uterine contractions and even orgasm in some nursing mothers. It's completely natural and normal. We are intelligent animals. We have free will that can go against instinct. In order to survive, procreate, and have healthy children, we need incentives. Pleasure is a pretty strong motivator.

@politelypompous Well, how about comfort? That's a pretty strong reason. I take it you don't have kids. If you did, you'd know that trying to get a toddler to do something he/she doesn't want to do will result in an emphatic "NO!!" So, why is age 2 or 3 the correct age? Sounds a bit arbitrary to me. If I had to guess, I think a child would not want to breastfeed once puberty kicks in. Look up the Westermarck Effect.

cold-turkey is the absolute WORST way to wean!!! you SLOWLY decrease the times and length of nursing until all night time feedings are done, then decrease until its only a wake up and go to sleep thing. then only after the kids are comfortable do you stop. even after you've decided that you've ended it takes a week or two with the odd time nursing at bed times before the child stops completly. one doesnt have to traumatize their baby! to wean!!

I know from experence Ive nursed 3 babies now and nursed my older two after the year mark against my familys wishes. this movie has a good message, but is showing it in a bad way. they are showing the extreem instances of breastfeeding; making people who dont see it often to it feel uncomfortable, then showing them heartbraking weaning. this is counterproductive!!! it will hinder any good there people!! its showing reasons WHY its still not a common thing in many countries.

Have you people ever been on a nudist beach? I had that experience years ago in the south of France, it was quite mundane. There is another video on YouTube where the child is 3 and goes nuts when the Mother tried to wean her! You can't ask the child does he want this, or that, she said he wants his milk, but it is more that milk they want, it is the cuddle, the contact, and it all goes together

@angelsgurl: No, I wouldn't think it was totally strange to see a 2-yr-old w/a bottle or pacifier. I once saw a 6-yr-old who still had a pacifier. Which I did think was a bit unnecessary. I personally don't think breastfeeding is necessary to such extreme ages. It's not that common that I'm aware of, in my country. I don't plan to breastfeed any past 2, for sure. Maybe not even that long. But it was an interesting documentary, anyway.

I wonder if it would be better to start weaning earlier, so it can be a little slower process, and not such a huge deal? I'm actually finding this very interesting, never would've thought I would have. It's really making me consider breastfeeding a little longer. When I have my baby, in February, that is. :)
