my physics teacher talked about "dimensions" last year. she said: "we live in the 3rd dimension. and there actually is a 5th dimension but you guys probably don't know about that stuff." no one knew what she was talking about. but i did :)
Glee's become almost necessary to promote old tunes to the younger populace... but I do wish there was a channel re-showing all the Judy Garland Show broadcasts and the alike in the UK. Glee's b/w episode reminded me so much of those shows that I raised myself on via YT after my father introduced me to them on record. Still, I think they need a classically trained singer to come onstage for an episode to develop the actors in a different way - I'm hoping S4 brings in non-pop-y singers.
As a teenager, singing together with her friends in subway stations and on street corners in the Bronx, NY, a young Laura Nyro has that special ability within her to write this classic. Her own rendition is beautiful. Marilyn McCoo and the other members of the 5th Dimension immortalized the song a few years later in 1969 with their amazing rendition of Nyro's Wedding Bell Blues. Yes indeed, you are one lucky fellow Billy Davis, Jr!
I will probably be very upset if they end up covering the Mamas and Papas too. No one in that cast (with their autotuned, shrill voices) would be able to replicate the rich, multi layered harmonies that seem to endlessly echo off the walls.
I loved this song long before Glee ever did it. For 23 years I've been exposed to these old songs everyday of my life and I can say this music definitely shaped my childhood. The music of the 50's and 60's always takes me back to a simpler time and has become forever infused in my emotional psyche. Unfortunately, Glee has never done it for me: it doesn't give me any uplifting emotions and by knowing the older songs so well, the covers just seem to lack heart and soul.
@nerdygrl647 I agree with everything you've said here @nerdygrl647, but i will at least give them a bit of credit for bringing young people into the fold. Good taste will win in the end.
Anyone else tired of the "Glee is better" "No Glee is awful" thing? I don't understand this competition between who heard it first, what is "real" music ect. It's not like any of you wrote the song. I heard this on Glee, then looked for the original version, like I'm sure many others did. And then the world didn't end.
@NZDYL4N I agree. If Glee exposes people to new styles of music and songs they otherwise would never have heard, I think that's great. All I would ask is that folks recognize the "degree of difficulty" in Marilyn McCoo's performance. When someone posts on here critical comments about her live performance in 1969, it does bother me insofar as I feel that person is not accounting for the fact that McCoo's singing is live, and not slickly dubbed for a studio-taped tv program. That's what upsets me.
@raelraven2 Agreed, I doubt many singers could pull that off today. I think a lot of the criticisms from Glee fans is that a lot of them form an emotional attachment with the characters that's unavailable with the original artist. They can't have the same objective view they would have if it were just two singers, ya know?
I manage my family's restaurant here in Boca Raton florida and who who comes in with a group last night? Yes, Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis jr. Such good people, Both look great, and Marilyn is still so beautiful . Hope they come back in. It's not every day you are in the presence of living legends.
I love it when Glee exposes people to great music! By having it on Glee millions of young folks who I'm sure have never heard this amazing song are now familiar with it. Win win to me!
Notice how no one gave you the thumbs up you're so desperate for, because this song is a classic ......Glee shouldn't be the reason anyone views this video.
@Deepstarr7020 In defense of music4life13571, I appreciate that Glee features classics like this. Non-Americans like me are only exposed to what the mainstream media offers and discovering songs like this through international runs of Glee is a pleasure. It doesn't mean, however, that I like the Glee cover more than the original. I loved this better. :)
@TheTashanet You do realize that this song is being performed live on national tv in front of a large studio audience and with no studio enhancements? To convince me that "Emma" (or whoever's voice was dubbed in) sings it better let "Emma" get up on live tv and perform it using 1969 technology.
I first listen to this song from gilmore girls and I love it , so when I listen the first 15 seconds in glee I was like hell yes they are doing wedding bell blues
@alexisanne lol same here my friend thats how i remember the song from my girl takes me back to when i was about 12/13 when the film came out and certainly takes me back then!!
<3<3<3<3<3'd this and still do! Brings back memories from 4th & 5th grade! My classmates brought their portable record players and records with them to school and we'd listen to this song and others. } )
@AnelehRelloh I do too! and Richard talking about Lorelais ear infections. I remember that was the first time I felt simpathy for Emily and then in like the next five seconds I went back to hate her.
Marilyn's voice is like a rich desert that you can't get enough of. It matched the times when the world was a much nicer place and people weren't afraid to dream.
Awesome song written and originally recorded by the incomparable Laura Nyro. It was serendipity for the 5th Dimension that Nyro used the name "Bill" in the song. It was a perfect fit for Marilyn McCoo to sing to Billy Davis, Jr :)
@zwartepiet412 Are you kidding me ? Glee,,,and it's cast, have preformed many of these types of music/songs in a very respectful and excellent way that gives them honor and keeps them fresh and alive in an age which seems to lack ANY class or style...
