Been quite a while since you uploaded these videos, but I must thank you for the MUCH needed lessons. My teacher set me on bassoon my sophomore year in the highest tier band class and I've taught myself how to play (at least adequately!) for the past couple years. The time spent watching these videos are extremely helpful for playing better.
Thank you so much! I'm a flute player but I want to play a different instrument. My band director mentioned the bassoon. I was timid to give him a definite answer because I did not know much about it. Thanks to your wonderful videos, I cannot wait till I get to try the bassoon!
@ILoveJade4Ever U r SOO LUCKY! The only way my band directors will even let us touch another instrument, is if we make the All-State band 2 years in a row!! I've often considered talking to them about learning bassoon, but everyones told me that the only way i'll have even a microscopic chance is if I make our School's top band!
Thank you for addressing a seemingly simple, yet important task - taking the bassoon apart and swabbing it. Do you recommend the 'leave-in' stick swabs which are supposed to wick away moisture from the pads?
The stick swabs are not usually good choice. For one, they shed material in the bore and can cause pads to leak. I recommend the pull through swab. See my video on how to make one.
hey man, i just got a bassoon from my awesome teacher today.. and now im practicing and such and i watched you video's. and they helped me, i went to wetten the reed in water and it sound alot better. thanks for tip. and now i know a few fingering's :D. .. ..
its alot bigger then a clairinet... lol and ALOT BETTER!
Polyprophylene is the material used in many "plastic" bassoons. The plastic bassoons are excellent school instruments--they stand up to wear and tear quite well.

Does anyone know if normal music stores carry bassoons to rent?
swinginsaxman 3 years ago
@swinginsaxman since bassoons are sp expensive, stores do not rent them out, you either have to use your schools or buy one.

Make sure to ALWAYS swab the Boot joint After playing especially if you have a wooden bassoon.
if you let moisture build up over time the wood can rot. its kinda like brushing your teeth to keep from getting cavities.
Great videos!
