im all happy and in awe from lots of the newer generation liking this kinda music nowdays, guess all that bitching about rap was for nothing or paid off, either way its all good now. just proves REAL music is timeless.
The Pie never got their just rewards. I preferred them with Peter Frampton in the line-up. (It was his band; Marriott joined after quitting the Small Faces.) The Pie went through various styles, from the acoustic so prevalent on their first two albums (also had some great Small Faces-style rock) to the wonderful 'Humble Pie' and 'Rock On' albums. But if you like this track, get 'Rockin' the Fillmore'... very riffy. And check into the Jeff Beck Group's version of this tune and 'Jailhouse Rock'.
No way it's not a lift from Free riff it's Humble Pie plain and simple !The riff is ride a pony that your thinking bout but they are not the same at all .
well, i was in the Grande Ballroom in '69 watching Steve and Company wreak havoc
on Stone Cold Fever straight into Big George..when Big hit on one, Jeff Beck came a-flying from the wings with Rod Stewart and it was Wacko Night..acid everywhere
@universeandfuture your wiser than most your age. some of todays music is good but the 70s rock was filled with emotion that seems to be lost in much of todays music. as we use to say in the 70s ... keep on keepin on:)
The combination of Frampton and Marriott was blending of two hugely talented artists. Still feel the Pie was at it's best with Frampton & Frampton with the Pie. There are some great cuts on "Smokin" but the album is missing "a whole feel" from previous Pie albums - try to imagine Marriott singing "I'm In You" - doesn't work does it!
@horrorshow76 i don't know, but seeker u r my friend.... i saw steve in lot's of big shows and then in later times at taverns and ....my ears are still ringing!!!!and i love his soul....u keep him alive; thanks and please all u all keep on diggin' deep' keep this band Alive!!!
wicked good concert band, one of the best ever at the thunderous rock ending...."qualude thunder" as Zappa called it. at their best onstage-albums never caught how heavy they really were.....good shit here
Janis. James Brown. Are you fucking kidding me? Tora Tora came close. Marriott is jesus fucking christ. And that idiot pretender who likes to think he's the second cumming. Just don't call us the "devil" rays. I am so Humble Pie.
This is interesting in that the photo shows the original Humble Pie, but the cut is actually the 1981 version of the band from the album "GO FOR THE THROAT". It featured Bobby Tench on lead guitar (who also sang the bridge on this track). You can't mistake Bobby's voice - listen to Jeff Beck's ROUGH & READY album. Jerry Shirley played drums and Anthony "Sooty" Jones rounded out the lineup of this incarnation of THE PIE on bass. Very, very good musicians! Marriott was his usual awesome self!
I can appreciate that for sure. I saw Humble Pie twice, Once at Gaelic Park in NYC back in 72 with Clem Clemson & in 1981 with Bobby Tench at a NJ bar called The Hole in The Wall. They were unbelievable both times but I remember feeling badly for Marriott having to play dumps like that while Rod Stewart & his other contemporaries were playing arenas. Marriott was the best there ever was. Thanks for posting these great videos!
Yes Seeker, I remember the 72 gig vividly. SMOKIN' had been recently released and the jury was still out on Frampton's replacement. All my buddies and I were 17 year old know-it-alls and thought nobody could replace Frampton. They opened up with 30 DAYS IN THE HOLE and Clem blew the stadium apart. Their sound was absolutely ferocious! I saw Frapton not long after that at the Academy of Music in NYC. He became enormously successful but I always felt The Pie was him at his best.
it was in august 1969 that humble pie played in the bilzen pop festival in belgium where i happened to be touring there. i still remembered they were headlinded over deep purple.the concert was chaotic, rain lashed but hummle pie rocked us thru. thanks for the memories steve wherever you are.....
what a great concert band in their day. tight, heavy as hell, tough riffs, and fucking thunderous endings. front row at saratoga in ny in 1972 on the smokin tour. awesome shit
if you can find a copy of "On to Victory" look at the front along the rail of the pool table theres four small white bags......OMG

I've heard that riff beginning at the 0:03 in a Free song - can't recall which. Sounds like a Frazier riff - my guess is humble pie lifted it.

Humble Pie sure could belt out those songs with the type of fiery high energy that you just don't see in today's Rock groups anymore.

Gotta love the little Elvis thing he does at o:39. Excellent little touch that.
JJ27Oslo 2 years ago 3
Like your attention to detail, it is nice what he does at 0.39. And like someone said Im sure Elvis would love this.
How Rock should be today no doubt.

@JJ27Oslo I thought I was the only one who noticed that Elvis thing. That's great. Lot of power in this version.
