i think every african american needs to be taught history like this.shes a pioneer no matter if you believe in homosexuality or not. i adore her and so many other LGBT artist of this time period. this is definately a piece of our history that needs to be taught
Such a wonderful piece of Black History that is never told. She was a pioneer in music, and she was openly Lesbian... This, during a time when African Americans were fighting for equality, being Lesbian with that and you could only imagine how hard life for her may have been.
Unfortunately, she was forced to adopt a heterosexual lifestyle because of the Black Church.
In spite of that, this is black history that needs to be told - especially to GLBT people of color.
yup she was openly lesbian in her early career but later claimed to be 'cured' by hormones. She also used to flirt with women in the audience while performing.
ooh baby, give me more of that jazz!

@breebombshell - I would really like to have heard her in person. I think she probably was a fantastic entertainer as well as a singer.

Gladys was the original "Drag King" ... known for wearing men's clothes, especially all-white tuxedos!
