Omg! I've sang in this church before! The reverb in that place is ridiculous. Somebody counted 7 second after a loud clap. Beautiful venue and acoustics. I only wish I could've heard Darius sing in there.
To all those who say that this is a higher key, you are right. Those that protest do it on the basis that Darius was the original Cain. This is actually a misconception. The production at the Paper Mill Playhouse, with Darius, was actually the SECOND major production. The first was in the Prince Edward's theater on the West End in London. The recording is incredibly rare, but I believe that this song is sung in the proper key. This is not a slight at Darius whom I love, these are merely facts.
Darius de Haas, singing here in this concert, happens to be the Original actor who played the part first in the U.S. and he is the same person singing on the the soundtrack recording.
@tyrizzo1@tyrizzo1 Sorry tyrizzo I've been singing tenor for over 25yrs and there's no such thing as a low head voice. Alomst everyone can easily decrease the volume in their lower register 'cause it's the most comfortable part of their range. When Darius is in his lower register he doesn't have to belt. During the highest part w/the runs he's hitting a C# and the last note he sustains in an A so he's definitely doing a full belt the whole time he's singing anything above middle C.
@tyrizzo1 Its never a full belt because he is mixing a lot, which is a lot healthier than belting. He'll maintain his voice for a long long time and it still has the same effect as belting.
Oh My God...I have listened to this a zillion times and that Lost note still makes me shiver.I wan to cry every time I listen to it. I'm a shivering crying mess... He is amazing. No one sings it like him. NO ONE.
wow you are wrong, this guy took it up a key on the recording too, but it doesnt matter what matters is that he has the power in his voice to sing the song
@fliedlice101 This guy is doing it a half step higher than it is written in originally. The key that it's sung in doesn't make a difference the power the song has, you should stop being concerned about what key a song is in, it means nothing. People are built differently and have a certain range the can sing in, changing keys helps compensate for that.
It is and isn't a higher key...he is the original actor to play the role..It was arranged in a higher key (G) for him..but the score is written a half step below this
I was there. Julia Murney played Eve/Mother and Norm Lewis played God/Father. It was perfect. Look up Julia Murney singing "Spark of Creation." Oh my.
Maybe, but on the original cast album, it's written in G major. I'm talking about in original the show, not a performance of it but some cast . . . But still, the fact that he can do the same riff in A major, whole step higher than in G is amazing!
No it's not! G major is the original key. I was in the show, and in my bedroom across the hall from where I am sitting at this ver moment is the script (the real one, not junior version) that I could go look it up and see that it's G major. When Abel sings it starts in E flat (or C minor. whichever.) and then on "beyond" it changes to G major.
I've been in this show, and it was the BEST THING EVER!!!!!! Our Cain was amazing, but WOW. Karl, you're brilliant! But what's withthe A major? Ever heard of the original key, um, 1 sharp?
genuinly ... i gudge talent shows i have seen and heard this song hundreds of times i have sung in the actual musical and i have watched every posible video of this song and this guy is the best hands down his timing is perfect and is exactly right to how cain would sing it ! well done!
i was thinking the whole time watching, "gee, he sounds alot like the guy on the cd." and then i went and looked and it was the same guy! boy, i feel dumb. but that was breathtaking!
Actually, Darius sings it a full step higher. The final note is an A.
And just to clarify, in the riff he sings the following for the word "lost": E, A, B(holds), A, B, C#, B, A, G, E. So the highest note he sings is a C#. But he HOLDS the B.
This was just to clarify and to resolve those conflicts.
Also, he holds a high 'A' at the end. Not a B. And the highest note he sings in this song is a high C#(obviously this is all refering to the men's range).
Darius has an AMAZING voice. And I gotta sing this shit in THIS KEY for my Voice class finals. My professor made sure I got one shit of a challenge this year.
THANK you for this... there are far too many butchered performances from this show on YouTube. My school is doing Children of Eden this spring, and I'm praying that people will step up and do the music right... of course, we're having a broadway vet guest star as Father, so that's a start.
Because there are no bad actors or singers on Broadway.
And all good actors and singers are on or have been on Broadway.
And the only artists who are professional have worked Broadway.
Get the stick out of your ass Samjew and worry about your part. That's what makes an exciting production. When everyone involved gets their lame-ass ego out of the way and gives that they can to the production and plays as a team.
Whoa whoa... calm down... I think you misinterpreted me.
I'm excited that we're having someone very experienced in theater (alumnus of my school) share his talent with us... and I'm hoping that the rest of us can do justice to the music. We haven't auditioned yet, so I'm not sure what our voices can do.
I didn't try to make any sort of attack on anybody who has not been on Broadway, nor display my ego in any way.
i disagree with you. i mean obviously just about everyone is immensely talented, but there are definitely some singers and actors who don't deserve to be there, they get there because of miscellaneous reasons that shouldn't matter but they do.
He played this part in the "official" (as per Stephen Shwartz) run of Children of Eden at the Papermill Playhouse in 1998. AMAZING

Don't be nervous. You wouldn't have been cast in the part if the director didn't believe in you.
Plus, the more nervous you are, the more likely it is you'll mess up.
