IN all fairness this is a very good how to video, probably the best I've seen, for home. But it's a bad video because it does not follow the Pathfinder philosophy of function and results quickly. This is not a slam against you personally. In a survival situation I really like the "Deadeye Deer processing, way" far better. There are some videos here on youtube check them out. I try to learn something from everyone that I can.
Do not get me wrong here but i think that it's not very artistic , what i mean is you not de-bone the hind legs and pelvis the best way possible. The way i was shown was to 1 ) find the bone closer to the surface 2 ) make a cut to that bone ( parallel to it ) 3 ) " skin " the meat from the bone. What that does is you get one major piece of meat and not bits and pieces. Overall a great instructional video , not a lot of people know about the "fish" ( even in Greece we call it that way lol )
neck roast. I take this and soak it in a Meade for 24 hrs. with garlic onions and little cayenne pepper, lime juice an then rap it in a sheet.then i build a fire in the ground and once the coals die down then I place the neck in and cover it back up with dirt and let it cook of 12 hr.Man when that comes out it falls of the bone and ummmmm
Not bad, but I do the leg by seperating the muscle groups and then makeing steaks, Why would you put the sirloins into Burger? Shank makes great soup. All deer fat needs to be removed or you have some nasty tasting meat.
Great vid. My schedule doesn't seem to match up w/friends hunts but ya make it look easy so Think I'll have to give it a go next year Also got stuck w/step dad didn't want to kill bambi LOL!
I'm from California (originally from Tennessee) I'm probably wrong but that looks like about 1000 dollars worth of meat. I just started hunting with a buddy. If I get one of those I'm defiantly gonna need a separate freezer. Great video. I never Imagined that much meat would come from one deer.
thanks for the vid man really helps me out not spending the cash or losing meat on a butcher!! keep rocking! and safe hunting! this is my 3rd season!! im loving it here in massachusetts!
5 people dis like this but behind those doors at the store this is what happens back ther i would take home don like this than store bought vension any day.
1) Aging: 40/40 ? (40 days at 40 degrees ? (seems excesive) ... Limits ?
2) What if you do not have a fridge/freezer ? ... Smoking/Jerking, etc. (other?).
3) What might one rub on the hung carcass, to keep it from spoiling (and bugs)
i.e. ... How would one process this, in the wilderness, so that one or two people might get the most benefit, before total spoilage ? ... Time limits ? What would an indian scout have done ... and not done ?
@Killbore1 Lol, I was eating Pizza pops while watching this, and after I finished, paused the video, brought my plate up, and looked at the plate, and said "Damn, raw deer meat looks so much better than that".
Very helpful video for someone like myself who does not know any hunters.Pathfinder is just awsome, helping feed the world 1 viewer at a time. With meat cost rising hunting is becoming more of a need. One question-whats is sinu used for, thanks pathfinder you have put much needed food in my freezer.
@danietkissenle As he says in the beginning it is 35 degrees outside so it should be fine. When an internal temperature of meat starts getting too close to 50 you want to get it in the fridge.
best deer dressing video on u tube,it is good to know how to do for survival.with food cost on the rise at the age of 33 I will try deer hunting for the first time,I going with a crossbow for quick humane harvest and no missed leg shots.thanks for the knowledge and salute to Dave great tips love the show
I love how he down plays wat he is doin, "Im no professional deer butcher by any means, but the point of this is if we were in a self reliant situation..." He does just fine at butcherin up deer to use for your family in any means. He helped me out alot because i want to start processing my own deer to save $
<<< are a big hunting family...and we all thought this was 1 well done and spokin post on dressin out a deer ...thank you and job well ....peace and god bless bro
YEAH I JUST WANTED TO AGGREE WITH EVERONE ELSE ON HERE I VE KILLED THREE DEER THIS YEAR MY FIRST THREE EVER IVE PROCESSED THEM ALL MY SELF WENT TO TRACTOR SUPPLIE GOT A 100 DOLLAR GRINDER AND SAVED ME ALOT AND THE MEAT IS GREAT I LIKE IT MORE THEN BEEF GREAT VIDIO
when it comes to deboning, I have found that a Filet knife works better because it allows you to bend around the bones and then (if done right) you don't have to go back and do so much cleaning of the bones.
I gotta tell ya man, that was an awsome video! Thank you very much! I've been wanting to start processing my own deer, but I thought it would require me to purchase expensive equipment like a band saw. I already have a burger grinder and I have a good knife and a good saw, so it looks like I'm ready to try my hand at it. I've always been intimidated at the thought of cutting steaks. I guess the worst that could happen is I would end up with a big mess of deer burger, lol. Thanks again man!
If you are having trouble withkeeping your hands warm put a pair of cheap neoprene gloves on, then latex over top. this keeps your prenes dry and your hands warm.
My dad made me process my own deer for the first time and it definitely isnt as easy as it looks. You did about five thousand times better than i did.
after seeing all the meat you just took off that deer, Ive been getting robbed by the butcher man. thanks to this video that wont happen ever again. thanks bud....
all that red meat is making me hungry, summer sausage breakfast, we usualy just pay like 35 bux to have em processed but its good to know what to do. ..............................ewwwee them backstrap, off to the fridge for my summer sausage
iv learned allot watching the wildernessoutfitter videos but this is one video that you guys need some help with. in a survival situation this would work fine but when its going in the freezer there's allot better ways of doing it so if you plan on butchering you own deer this season i suggest you watch more videos and have someone experienced to help you your first time
My god, a lot of wasted loins and strips for "burger meat". Very informative yes, but seems you are more of a burger and roast guy although you did one part of steaks(very little).
Great Video! I have killed and processed a few myself, but like you said, I by no means a professional. I always like to watch others. Everyone has their own way of doing it and I try to learn tricks and tips from everyone I watch. Thanks! It looks cold out there. Did you have a warm type glove under the rubber gloves??
"This is where the steaks live" at 15:00. Hilarious! Thanks for the informative series. Books can only take a person so far. Seeing something done is invaluable.
I just want to say that this video series on deer processing from start to finish has been very informative for me. I grew up in a non hunting family and so I've learned a lot here. Looking forward to hunting my first deer, maybe next season.Thank you so much for taking the time to get this on video and get it up on youtube. You rock, man.
Great video Critter! I was wondering if the meat was still good on that back broken leg or did you have to discard it? If possible, I would like to see a video on making a knife handle from deer bone.
Thanks "Critter".. I'm a suburban raised guy but w/ Tenn. farm folk 'kin (country/self-relant father died when young) and mother moved us away from his family into an urbanite community... I feel robbed of the culture/history of half my heritage. Vids like these give me more insight into what I've missed being alienated from 1/2 my heritage. Thank you..
BTW, those knives better be "shaving sharp", and that table better be "clean-as-a-whistle" :)
Love the video. I've always wanted to know how to process a deer last one we tried to process ourselves we mest up! We didn't get much meet at all off of it. Thinks for sharing.
Thank you, If you could follow up with what the process is for the hide, and how you much meat you end up with. How much storage do you need. Thanks again, I have never had to hunt for food, but it is nice to know how to dress out a deer if needed.

Great job crtter! I really dd learn alot. Do you worry about the tendons and such when you ground your burger and sausage meat. And, do ypu have a good recipe for sausage?
I can't believe you don't have a butcher in you EDC. :) Great job Critter. You don't have to be a butcher to do this, just get the meat off the deer and use as much as you can with out wasting any of it. Even if it's not cut like the butcher would have done it I think it's still edible. Bon Appetite!
You did great .. I do not trust the meat cutters here so I do ALL of my cutting , Beef , Hog and all A wider knife will help keep your stacks start ...
well i think youdid a good beginner video of butchering a deer for people that dont know anything at all thank you i butcher about 30 animals a year between beef and deer
You do a better job than I do butchering my deer, I'll have to try using my mora knife If I ever take a deer this season. I know you keep saying your not a professional, but you are closer than you think bud. I'd let you butcher for me anyday!
i know your just fixing this up for someone else... id just like to say in a self reliance situation you want to keep as much of that fat as you can... Fat is necessary for proper brain function... wild game tends to be very lean so you want to save fat where you can get it.
That is a lot of meat for a self reliance situation, like idk how you would store all the meat for long term usage without it spoiling besides smoking it all or jerky. How would you go about that?
I wish i would have watched this before going at it last weekend, i really "butched" my deer if you know what i mean. thanks critter, great job, hofully you'll show us how to skin a muskrat,
@wildernessoutfitters My grandparents taught us not to waste any thing after skinning & prepping the kill as much as possible we cut the rest of it up in to pieces that would fit in to a pot to be boiled down in to a stock for soups, casseroles, and chili beans do the the same as you would do to make chicken & dumplings.
why would you cut fat off the meat?
jazzplayer9 1 week ago
@jazzplayer9 The fat makes the meat go bad or rancid faster.

You did great .. I do not trust the meat cutters here so I do ALL of my cutting , Beef , Hog and all A wider knife will help keep your stacks start ...

well i think youdid a good beginner video of butchering a deer for people that dont know anything at all thank you i butcher about 30 animals a year between beef and deer
hammerjar9000 2 years ago
You do a better job than I do butchering my deer, I'll have to try using my mora knife If I ever take a deer this season. I know you keep saying your not a professional, but you are closer than you think bud. I'd let you butcher for me anyday!

i know your just fixing this up for someone else... id just like to say in a self reliance situation you want to keep as much of that fat as you can... Fat is necessary for proper brain function... wild game tends to be very lean so you want to save fat where you can get it.

will you be giving out samples at the end of the video lol

That is a lot of meat for a self reliance situation, like idk how you would store all the meat for long term usage without it spoiling besides smoking it all or jerky. How would you go about that?

@wildernessoutfitters My grandparents taught us not to waste any thing after skinning & prepping the kill as much as possible we cut the rest of it up in to pieces that would fit in to a pot to be boiled down in to a stock for soups, casseroles, and chili beans do the the same as you would do to make chicken & dumplings.

Deer burger and sausage? Just stick the stuff in a stew, it tastes far better that way.
