  • Shit .. this reminds me of the daring Doolittle Raiders, from April 1942 on The original Hornet CV8, when they launched those bulky B25 Mitchells from the deck.

  • .........BUT, could it carry ANY cargo weight at all, PLUS fuel enough to get anywhere? Nice show, but what's the use?

  • @5xls It's called a test................. We decided to use the Grumman C-2 for COD instead.

  • NO JATO WAS USED FOR THIS TAKEOFF. They didn't need to use jato bottles due to the fact that the carrier was making 28 knots into a 25 knot wind, meaning they had over half the required takeoff speed for an early model Hercules already moving over the deck.

  • @dankinusmc1 Exactly, but most cilvilians do not realize that the carrier just does noty ever sit there for takeoffs & landings, it is constantly moving so natural airflow over the deck is often used to the advantage.

  • i'am amazed...

  • hahaha...... I wish I would have seen that from the deck

  • cool..i love working with that aircraft..JATO is really useful especially for short take off.

  • @rollingcouple Great for fast BBQ, replaces Propane like BUTTAH

  • Even though the C-130 is bigger than a B25, you have to think of how powerful those engines are, and how efficiently they deliver that power compared to an old war radial.

Besides, it's built for STOL. It could take off, not land back on though, from one of those Carriers that just carry Harriers and helicopters.

  • @supaderp agreed

  • she took off under her own steam, taking off into the wind for extra lift.

  • @jonesy7605 No way thats not possible

  • It's what happened. It's too heavy for the ship's catapult to safely launch. But due to the physics involved (Four large turboprop engines covering a wide area with efficient propellers) it forces it's self up with raw power. It's STOL capable anyway.

As i recall the Doolittle raids were worse. Same size of aircraft, the carrier then was smaller. And minus the fancy avionics and STOL ability they got the B25s up.

  • i believe the B25's were smaller, but if you look at the scale of things it could be the same. And once the majority of B-25's took off from the hornet, the B-25's cold use the majority of the deck, some even still barely scraping the water.

  • @peepeevagi

    jato

  • It helps :D

  • @peepeevagi

it helps like how scuba gear helps u breath underwater

  • Okay, it more than helps xD

  • Does it use JATO rockets to take off or the catapult?

  • Do C-130 use the Cat to take off i know it may sound like a siyyl question??.

  • They easily can land and take off from carriers. It just greatly increase the wear on the reduction gearbox

  • Please check the series ''WINGS'' this is a documentary that discovery channel produced in the 90's ,look for the C 130 HERCULES episode and problem solve you will see........!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Yeah, diffinitly see some JATO action there of course!

  • not exactly for navel aircraft carriers are equipped with steam catapults that are used launch aircraft like the USS .independence

  • @Richey2009 I think that's just steam from the catapults.

  • this is exactly the role of the v-22 osprey. heavy cargo that can be brought to a carrier. also im pretty sure its rocket assisted, you can see smoke off the sides

  • Actually ther aren´t rockets, but there is a Projoct, think its called something like V-22 "Ghost"

  • There are many great reasons to put a C-130 on a ship....the last time one landed on mine they landed to bring us supplies to fix a Small Hull leak that we couldn't fix on our own

  • wtf a 130 is too huge to be on the deck of the carrier. Look at the F-111. But yeah I can't believe what I'm seeing

  • what the hell is that things v2 speed?!?!

  • unbelievable

but isnt a C130 way to big for a carrier?????

    xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

  • and yet they still did it

  • No.....the C-130 is the Navy's own Transport Aircraft....why do you think it's the Flag ship for the Blue Angels?

  • Actually, the Blue Angel's C-130 Fat Albert is a Marine aircraft, with an all Marine crew

  • My RDC in boot camp, chief bulthius, told me to look this up when we got a chance. Fucking incredible.

  • WOW!

    Fantastic.

  • OMG i don't believe in what i'm seeing!

  • COOL STUFF!

  • She also had JATO packs on take-off !!

  • The Navy did a whole series of landings and takeoffs. From what I recall, the plane was fairly heavily loaded. The (US Air Force) pilot got a DFC for the feat. Eventually they decided that striking the entire air group belowdecks or shooting 'em all off to give the Herkybird a clear deck was too much hassle. The C2 Greyhound was subsequently developed .

  • As someone pointed out to me, I had misremembered something - the pilot on these trials was a US Navy fighter pilot. Just wanted to correct that.

  • It was a USMC Pilot, actually, iirc.

  • Negative on the USMC pilot. It was Navy Lt James Flatley...look it up.

    Jimboking (USMC)

  • I read about this when I was a teenager. The plane landed in 300ft using his reverse propellor's then took off in 700ft with the carrier at full speed, all of this to demonstrate that it could be done.

  • Jeez, how light was that bird?!

  • Over 100,000lbs on one landing! They did this because they needed a way of transporting J-79 engines to carriers.

  • No, they never did anything with it. The trial was considered a failure. It was concluded that it would not be practical for average fleet pilots to land a C-130 on the deck.

  • WOW!!!! The prophecy has come true!!

  • kewl
