The backing singers screwed up and he tried to get them back on track. Why he had all the extra backing vocals, I don't know.  LC can do no wrong.

They were most likely hired in to do the performance. He had a dedicated band at the time. Bands tended to use the House Band on Letterman in those days.

Ill say this though, have you heard the teddy thompson version of this song. WAY BETTER than the cohen one.

and he changes the lyrics on this from "crack n anal sex" to "speed and careless sex" WEAK

Yes, it is true that L. Cohen is an amazing singer/songwriter, poet, and author.

He just so happens to be rather big in the states, unlike you say. His fan base is rather international. Teddy Thompson's version is nowhere near as good as the original by L. Cohen. He only changes the lyrics when he is on live television. You insolently overdetermined know-it-all.
