Nice version- an early take apparently. I DO know that they had a lot of grief over the line: "its hard to love a man whose legs are bent and paralyzed." They left it in and that is what makes this such a great song. The second instance of showing courage.

@BigPoppa905 It would be relevant for today, absolutely! I have husband in Iraq, and things happen all the time in marriages and relationships with the soldiers. Especially the younger ones, as well as the ones that are injured and go home. It's a fairly common tale. Heartbreaking as ever...just like past wars, some things never change.

@Binckes64 I guess the subject matter is too serious for Kenny Rogers nowadays because he turned it into this kind of happy go lucky song, with it speeded up, people clapping and him having members of the audience sing parts of it. I don't like his live version at all.

I think it was about a Vietnam Vet since the song was recorded in the 1960s.
