kolsyrade you are right about the Byakuren. I've been training in Byakuren for the last 5 years. I've attended several seminars taught by Sugihara Kancho in Okinawa. Good video! How did you get it?
in shorinji kempo techniques are organised in diferent families. "byakuren ken" is the name of one of these families. Masayasu Sugihara was specialised in this family of techniques.
by the way the shorinji kempo logo is no longer the manji, it's now a double shield with 4 lotus flowers
The byakuren founders real name (used by all but Doshen So who called him Byakuren) is Masayasu Sugihara, a personal student of Doshen So, and at times served as his bodyguard.
Byakuren has close ties to shin-kyokushin, and often participate in their competitions.
It is based on shorinji, but has grown to resemble kyokushin and other knockdown karate styles (world Oyama, Esnhin, seidokaikan etc) very much.
BTW, a quick google showed Byakuren to mean "white lotus".
Its not shorinji kempo, but it is a style based on shorinji kempo and inspired by kyokushin.
The founder of Byakuren karate was banished from Shorinji kempo (where he was a top profile) for participating in kyokushin knockdown tournaments. His new style has taken his shorinji kempo skills and molded them to fit the knockdown karate way of fighting.
I thought you meant "world Oyama karate" -founded by Shigeru Oyama.
It is one of the largest Offshots from Kyokushin (founded by Masutatsu Oyama), and use basically the same competition rules.
But as I said, this is neither. It is a offshot from Shorinji Kempo (not actual shorinji kempo), that kyokushin knockdown rules -and often compete as guests in kyokushin events.
okay, what does it say, the kanji on the gi? I don't see either the "star" or the "swastiki" of the Shorinji, and can you tell me what Byakuren means? Yes, I know about Shigeru Oyama, I have their books, and it seems like Oyama (Mas) karate has splintered off all over the place.
I dont know what byakuren actually means, but it was a Buddhist name given to the founder by the shorinji kempo founder. The kanji on their Gi says simply "Byakuren".
The name of the organization is Byakuren kaikan.
They dont use the shorinji kempo star or swastika since they no longer are shorinji kempo. Also I suspect that they understand how that particular symbol is regarded in the west despite its ancient buddistic meaning).
thank you very much, I have only had a slight chance to take some (briefly) Shorinji in both Idaho Falls, from a nidan from Japan (very modest), and in Pocatello. The Pocatello was more points tournament based, but very good and strong training methods. Most of my background is Oyama(mas)offshoots. However, I am very fascinated with Doshen So, and his aiki/shaolin based system(s).
I have found out that there is a lady, nidan/sandan? in Pocatello, Idaho, and also another teacher of Shorinji Kempo in Boise. Such a wonderful style.
babelfish translation of the above, for us who dont understand french: "I was at the edge of the tatami and when yuyu kitajima put the blow of knees I saw 2 teeth stealing and atterir one meter further"

Byakuren/ White Lotus" was the buddhist given by master So Doshin to his student Masayasu Sugihara...
When Kancho Sugihara choose to found his own method after Sodoshin's death, he kept his given first name (Byakuren) by respect of past master...

Oyama karate uses more or less the same rules (inherited from kyokushin). Same rules=similar fighting styles.
