the dark tower series has now been confirmed, its gonna be 3 movie trilogies followed by a television series by nbc that will fill in the gaps between movies 1 & 2
The concepts and overall story of The Dark Tower series would be eviscerated on the big screen. Hollywood would feel as though they'd have to cater to the mass audience and dumb down EVERY aspect. I loved certain elements of Lost. Think they really fucked up the last few seasons but they can't do that with Dark Tower because it's already written, so this should be good.
How in the hell are they going to pull this off? I mean think about it.....how many movies will it take? How can you take this story and put it in film without destroying it? Unless they have 20 sequels...lol If its done right, it should take decades to finish. Am I right? Sam Elliot I think is too old. Mortensen would be good, I agree.
jj said in NOV 2009 he ISNT doing DT bcoz he's a big fan and doesnt want to screw it up(which doesnt make sense to me, him being a fuckin good director and all!!) plus he's been doing lost for 6 years, and doesnt want to spend another 7 years doing DT.
This is going to take This Tale to the masses I RREAALLLLY hope it lives up to the Towers series. I am Huge Tower tower junkie ! I wounder what quirky release date will be 19 ....
no matter who he chooses, people are going to be angry and they're going to cuss i know i will xD. I think random actors that are unknown would do well, we have a world of people out there! Johnny Depp as Roland... really... could you take him seriously after seeing him parading around like that on Pirates of the Caribbean, i would never want to see johnny depp playing Roland!
I agree this should definately be done right and given the full attention it deserves with the right director and cast. It deserves to be done right firstly for the fans and as a tribute to Stephen King.
If I had to cast it I would go for either Viggo Mortensen or Liev Schreiber as Roland. Ryan Reynolds(maybe) Casey Affleck or Jake Gyllenhall to play Eddie, Sam Rockwell as the Man in Black not too sure who would play Jake, Ed Harris as Cort. But thats just me
They should do it as a trilogy. 2 books in each movie and they can sprinkle wizard and glass through out all of them as flash backs. I really hope that it's not JUST like the books. I think the movie should start just like the book, but Roland should have Cuthbert's horn. That way they could make little changes and we (the fans) could appreciate them.
Whatever happens, I'm just grateful Mick 'retard' Garris isn't going to get his untalented hands anywhere near it.
@Tiroth77 If they did decide to only do 6, which books would they put together. The gunslinger and the drawing of the three, maybe? The others seem to long, and have to much in them to put together. I'm really worried about how this is going to turn out.
theyre gonna fuck it up :( damn it.....daniel day lewis for roland! XP Halley Berry for Susanah! :P Ryan Renolds or Sean William Scott for Eddie!!!...i dont care who plays jake though lol
If Clint Eastwood was still in his prime, he'd be ideal for Roland. I think I'll vote with Nevadagunslinger on this one: Viggo Mortensen as Roland.
If they decide to make this into a trilogy of movies, it will be terrible. a miniseries = terrible. In order to accomodate all the "mature" content, it would have to be a complete series on a paid network (HBO, Starz, etc.)
All in all though, these books were amazing and I can only hope that the big screen does it justice!!
How would they ever do the books in a movie? Even a triology feels like too much would be left out to even do its half its justice. I kinda hope this doesn't pan out even though the idea is awesome. and seeing how the finale season of lost isnt good yeaaah no
@Yakerina He's not going to cram all seven novels into one film. You have to take it one step at a time, see if the first film makes any money so you can make a second. He's just referring to the first book.
I think John Terry who plays jack shephards dad on lost would make a good Roland. Look back on the episodes where his face is stubbly as hell. I think he'd fit the part he's tall skinny older like Rolands supposed to be and has those cold blue eyes too. Christian Bale isn't old enough and he is healthy looking and has brown eyes not a Roland for sure
If the DT was done as a movie, it would have to be a trilogy at a bare minimum. It really deserves the Harry Potter treatment, but it's not that popular and won't gross 500 million per movie.
i heard the same thing, but I heard he didn't want to do it anymore because he was afraid he would mess it up. Good reason, but a little miss guided, since he is a great director...frankly it would work a lot better as a tv mini series, rather than on the big screen. IF it were done, Nathan Fillion -Roland Deschain/ Halle Berry-Susannah, Christian Bale-Eddie, Jake- (?)...maybe not Bale for Eddie, someone well known though...maybe Milo Ventimiglia...
I heard this isnt happening anymore, maybe JJ finally looked at the story and fan base and decided he didnt want to ruin his career after all, lets face it he would be working on the "17" movies for the rest of his life. Not to mention ruining a story that is made to work with your imagination. Like LOTR, even though it was cool to see visuals, if you saw the movies before you read the books Im sorry to say youll never get to experience how good that story really is.
Hugh Jackman could make a good Roland and I always thought the guy who played Larry Underwood in the telemovie of The STAND would be the perfect eddie.
@MightyBass101 you're right when I was watching the crucible I totally thought that daniel day lewis should be the gunslinger and he would be perfect, not freaking christian bale
if this does make it into production i hope it is done on an epic scale a la LotR. 7 movies same director & cast for all. heres my cast, hugh jackman as roland, edward burns as eddie. jake i can't think of a 9 year old actor at all. susannah is tough, maybe sanaa lathan, but i see gary oldman as walter.
I also think that Viggo fits in Roland's character, but just physically; I saw him on "The Road" and well... If you think about it just a little bit xD! The guy he plays in there looks like Roland... As well for what he's doing... [SPOILER] (carring the light...) But yeah, I hope Roland stays as an unknown... I actually hope they don't do the movie thing cuz if they mess it up I will get mad, very, very mad xD! Oh well, long days and pleasent nights for everyone ;).
viggo could no way in hell pull off roland, and bale is a definate no. if there is an actor that could play roland, he is an unknown. roland has to be someone the scares the living crap out of me and there isn't an actor that can do that. the movie idea should be left alone. but I nominate stephen king to play stephen king
first person who comes to mind when i think of a movie of the dark tower was virgo to play roland, i think he has the bio type but dont know if he fits in the character... however i think this movie will never come, and if it comes they will probably f*** it or u can imagine a movie when a kid get hit by a car and shit himself up? or a woman banged by a demon?
Bale would make SHIT eddie. Just because hes in EVERYTHING right now, doesnt mean he has to be in the dark tower. He's way to serious...eddie is a smart ass easy going type (I know he's hard here and there) but for the most part..Bale is 2 macho now.
Viggo would be great as the gunslinger& I love the idea of J Franco as eddie..well done...but HughJackman, really reminded me of Clin in the Xmen
As for the age thing with jake;they could just shoot them all at the same time, like they did with LOTR.
Hugh Jackman in my opinion even looks like the Wheland paintings. He would be great as Roland.
Casting Jake is gonna be tough, since the whole time paradox thing mens he stays relatively the same age throughout the whole first half of the series. 9 year olds grow up pretty damn fast in real life, y'know.
I heard C Bale was to be cast as Eddie, V Mortinsen as Roland, and not sure of the other characters.
Sad news I heard is Lindelof and Abrams haven't been thinking about DT Movie at all, lately. I hope they still go into production, but I have a bad feeling they might abandon the project. I think, (eventually), someone else will do a Dark Tower movie(s) and the people will be pleased.
The way everybody loves these characters I don't think anybody is going to make a casting list good enough for the fans of the Dark Tower! You all know as soon as the movies come out you will go and see it no matter who was cast as Roland....admit it XD
Viggo Mortensen or Christian Bale as Roland, Halle Berry or Jada Pinkett Smith as Susannah, Ryan Reynolds as Eddie, Charles S. Dutton as the voice of Blaine, Angelina Jolie as Mia, Emma Watson as Susan Delgado, Meryl Streep as Cordelia Delgado, Isela Vega (the gypsy woman in the film "Cobrador, In God we trust") as Rhea de Cöos, Christopher Lee as The Crimson King, and Zac Efron as Sheemie Ruiz... jajaja =)
Sam Elliot would be much better suited to play Eldred Jonas, the man to play Roland could be nobody else but Hugh Laurie...He's got the eyes,he's tall, slim, and in most of the D.T. novels,(with the exception of flashbacks to his youth)Roland is of the same age as Hugh.
If they do it, DO IT RIGHT! None of this NBC mini series shit like The Stand. God they fucked that up. My vote for Roland is Sam Elliot, or Viggo Mortensen.
@lithjimmy I think that would mess with the original story line too much. I believe that Roland was doomed to this circular time line because he wasn't holding on to the Horn when (again I believe) he fell at Jericho Hill. That reload/repeat is his afterlife punishment for dropping it. Maybe if they had him grab the Horn when he was todash they could make it work.
@themaester5 I think it'd be cool. Not everything that works in a book, will work in a movie. I don't like it when a book gets raped, but at the same time, I wouldn't want a movie to be JUST like 'the' book. I think kicking of the Tower, with Roland carrying the horn, with be the only way to excuse whatever changes would be made. Not to mention, the fans could get to enjoy it, without knowing how it's going to end.
I think he would make a good gunslinger, I agree with you on that. But I really don't think he's hardened enough to play Roland, I don't think he has THAT in him.
some have mentioned Josh Holloway too, is very probable, since some directors use to repeat some actors in their projects. It's not a bad idea i think, he's a good actor.
I also think that Mike Patton (faith no more) is a great alternative for the man in black. if you watch Firecracker, you'll see that he has many voices, many faces, he's a rockstar and a badass... just like our man Randall. on the other hand, he hasn't got too much experience.
hile gunslinger, if he loves the books, he may do with them as PJ did with lord of the rings. we should hope. anything less than 7 3-hour epics would be nothing short of blasphemy. long days & pleasant nights from the motherwell.
after clint eastwood (sadly, a tad old for this role) viggo mortensen would be excellent as roland. may i add ryan reynolds as addy, rosario dawson as susannah, unsure about jake. man in black? watch storm of the century. look for andre linoge
well zeedi0, the difference is that Harry Potter is a piece of crap... nobody cares if they fuck it up making the movie, beacause of the shitty content... however, the dark tower is more like a metaphoric travel across the complex human existence, wich is very hard to put into images. It is like "Perfume", nobody really understand the character of jean-baptiste in the movie (not so in the book), they just take him as a Freakin' Psycho, and That's precisely what could happen with Roland D.
I'm just now reading The Dark Tower books and first of all, yes it would be a tragedy if Christian Bale played Roland. That said i'm in the middle of book 6 and i can't wait to finish this epic story. By the way, who would y'all like to play Roland Deschain of Gilead, the greatest character of all fiction?
christian bale has the tormented loner thing down well. as others have said, hugh jackman, russell crowe (a bit too stocky, perhaps?) viggo mortensen. just a shame clint eastwood is past this role. now there would have been THE gunslinger.
Christian Bale isn't tall enough and doesn't have the "Cold Dead Blue eyes" that Roland has. Also, Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe would be a disgrace playing Roland
bale's height is, sorry. WAS an unkown factor so i shall bow to your wisdom. crowe? don't see it. much too stocky. think jackman would get away with it. in the absence of eastwood? mortensen. i think. can't see any better than those two.
i really like the dark tower series but i'm kind of against the idea of a movie. i'd rather leave it as it is. ka(like a wind) would probably try to kill j.j. abrams like it TRIED with stephen king if the crimson king's low men don't do it first
dark towers ending, actually right up his alley

Lord of the Rings: 3 full novels, each adapted into a 3 hour film. You'll need a good portion of the day free to watch all those movies together.
Dark Tower: 7 full novels. They're either going to cut out almost everything, or it will be the longest film series ever.

no matter who he chooses, people are going to be angry and they're going to cuss i know i will xD. I think random actors that are unknown would do well, we have a world of people out there! Johnny Depp as Roland... really... could you take him seriously after seeing him parading around like that on Pirates of the Caribbean, i would never want to see johnny depp playing Roland!

Are they creating a tv series to The Dark Tower or is this off the table? It would be my next favorite show now that Lost is gone!

Daniel Day-Lewis is Roland....period. Zoe Saldana is Susanna and Leo might be able to pull off Eddie.
Jibboo812 1 year ago
@Jibboo812 Daniel is a cool idea for roland. I was thinking Mickey Rourke.
lithjimmy 1 year ago
I agree this should definately be done right and given the full attention it deserves with the right director and cast. It deserves to be done right firstly for the fans and as a tribute to Stephen King.
If I had to cast it I would go for either Viggo Mortensen or Liev Schreiber as Roland. Ryan Reynolds(maybe) Casey Affleck or Jake Gyllenhall to play Eddie, Sam Rockwell as the Man in Black not too sure who would play Jake, Ed Harris as Cort. But thats just me
novelist24 1 year ago
They should do it as a trilogy. 2 books in each movie and they can sprinkle wizard and glass through out all of them as flash backs. I really hope that it's not JUST like the books. I think the movie should start just like the book, but Roland should have Cuthbert's horn. That way they could make little changes and we (the fans) could appreciate them.
Whatever happens, I'm just grateful Mick 'retard' Garris isn't going to get his untalented hands anywhere near it.
lithjimmy 1 year ago
@lithjimmy it should be at least six or seven movies, trying to compact them would suck balls
Tiroth77 1 year ago
@Tiroth77 If they did decide to only do 6, which books would they put together. The gunslinger and the drawing of the three, maybe? The others seem to long, and have to much in them to put together. I'm really worried about how this is going to turn out.

@loketron no. no no no no NO! ..no.
strutnoodle 1 year ago
If Clint Eastwood was still in his prime, he'd be ideal for Roland. I think I'll vote with Nevadagunslinger on this one: Viggo Mortensen as Roland.
If they decide to make this into a trilogy of movies, it will be terrible. a miniseries = terrible. In order to accomodate all the "mature" content, it would have to be a complete series on a paid network (HBO, Starz, etc.)
All in all though, these books were amazing and I can only hope that the big screen does it justice!!
derikgodeaux 1 year ago
oh god, please no
DaveOfTheWest 1 year ago
How would they ever do the books in a movie? Even a triology feels like too much would be left out to even do its half its justice. I kinda hope this doesn't pan out even though the idea is awesome. and seeing how the finale season of lost isnt good yeaaah no

@Yakerina He's not going to cram all seven novels into one film. You have to take it one step at a time, see if the first film makes any money so you can make a second. He's just referring to the first book.
MorbidGuardian 1 year ago
I think John Terry who plays jack shephards dad on lost would make a good Roland. Look back on the episodes where his face is stubbly as hell. I think he'd fit the part he's tall skinny older like Rolands supposed to be and has those cold blue eyes too. Christian Bale isn't old enough and he is healthy looking and has brown eyes not a Roland for sure
snotweiler 1 year ago
If the DT was done as a movie, it would have to be a trilogy at a bare minimum. It really deserves the Harry Potter treatment, but it's not that popular and won't gross 500 million per movie.
RockBanned 2 years ago
i heard the same thing, but I heard he didn't want to do it anymore because he was afraid he would mess it up. Good reason, but a little miss guided, since he is a great director...frankly it would work a lot better as a tv mini series, rather than on the big screen. IF it were done, Nathan Fillion -Roland Deschain/ Halle Berry-Susannah, Christian Bale-Eddie, Jake- (?)...maybe not Bale for Eddie, someone well known though...maybe Milo Ventimiglia...
tcrimson 2 years ago
I heard this isnt happening anymore, maybe JJ finally looked at the story and fan base and decided he didnt want to ruin his career after all, lets face it he would be working on the "17" movies for the rest of his life. Not to mention ruining a story that is made to work with your imagination. Like LOTR, even though it was cool to see visuals, if you saw the movies before you read the books Im sorry to say youll never get to experience how good that story really is.

Billy Bob Thorton as Roland, good actor, could play the role with all it's subtlties.

Hugh Jackman could make a good Roland and I always thought the guy who played Larry Underwood in the telemovie of The STAND would be the perfect eddie.

if this does make it into production i hope it is done on an epic scale a la LotR. 7 movies same director & cast for all. heres my cast, hugh jackman as roland, edward burns as eddie. jake i can't think of a 9 year old actor at all. susannah is tough, maybe sanaa lathan, but i see gary oldman as walter.

@jasenzero1
Definitely! they better not F*** it up, the Dark tower deserves to be done well.

Oh well, long days and pleasent nights for everyone ;).
happymonsterr 2 years ago
Tottally agree. Roland must be a unknown.
ivanticristus 2 years ago
viggo could no way in hell pull off roland, and bale is a definate no. if there is an actor that could play roland, he is an unknown. roland has to be someone the scares the living crap out of me and there isn't an actor that can do that. the movie idea should be left alone. but I nominate stephen king to play stephen king
thantisman 2 years ago 2
first person who comes to mind when i think of a movie of the dark tower was virgo to play roland, i think he has the bio type but dont know if he fits in the character... however i think this movie will never come, and if it comes they will probably f*** it or u can imagine a movie when a kid get hit by a car and shit himself up? or a woman banged by a demon?

Bale would make SHIT eddie. Just because hes in EVERYTHING right now, doesnt mean he has to be in the dark tower. He's way to serious...eddie is a smart ass easy going type (I know he's hard here and there) but for the most part..Bale is 2 macho now.
Viggo would be great as the gunslinger& I love the idea of J Franco as eddie..well done...but HughJackman, really reminded me of Clin in the Xmen
As for the age thing with jake;they could just shoot them all at the same time, like they did with LOTR.
lithjimmy 2 years ago 2
God damn clint was born in the wrong time.. James Franco would make a good Eddie

except that the dark tower ie rolands charecter is based on clint eastwood. robert maillet to be cast as the tick tock man.

Hugh Jackman in my opinion even looks like the Wheland paintings. He would be great as Roland.
Casting Jake is gonna be tough, since the whole time paradox thing mens he stays relatively the same age throughout the whole first half of the series. 9 year olds grow up pretty damn fast in real life, y'know.

the roles i think would be good are
1.Roland= Christian Bale
2. Eddie Dean= James McAvoy
3. Susannah= Zoe Saldana

Viggo Mortensen or Christian Bale as Roland, Halle Berry or Jada Pinkett Smith as Susannah, Ryan Reynolds as Eddie, Charles S.

@nevadagunslinger What would you think if they started the movie with Roland carrying cuthbert's horn?
lithjimmy 1 year ago
@lithjimmy I think that would mess with the original story line too much. I believe that Roland was doomed to this circular time line because he wasn't holding on to the Horn when (again I believe) he fell at Jericho Hill. That reload/repeat is his afterlife punishment for dropping it. Maybe if they had him grab the Horn when he was todash they could make it work.
nevadagunslinger 1 year ago
@lithjimmy this my friend would blow my mind
themaester5 1 year ago
@themaester5 I think it'd be cool. Not everything that works in a book, will work in a movie. I don't like it when a book gets raped, but at the same time, I wouldn't want a movie to be JUST like 'the' book. I think kicking of the Tower, with Roland carrying the horn, with be the only way to excuse whatever changes would be made. Not to mention, the fans could get to enjoy it, without knowing how it's going to end.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
would anyone agree with me that a high budget anime series/movies based on the dark tower would be a good idea?
ulktz 2 years ago
some have mentioned Josh Holloway too, is very probable, since some directors use to repeat some actors in their projects. It's not a bad idea i think, he's a good actor.
I also think that Mike Patton (faith no more) is a great alternative for the man in black. if you watch Firecracker, you'll see that he has many voices, many faces, he's a rockstar and a badass... just like our man Randall. on the other hand, he hasn't got too much experience.
what do you think? (sorry my poor english again)

after clint eastwood (sadly, a tad old for this role) viggo mortensen would be excellent as roland. may i add ryan reynolds as addy, rosario dawson as susannah, unsure about jake. man in black? watch storm of the century. look for andre linoge
pfalky2k 2 years ago
well zeedi0, the difference is that Harry Potter is a piece of crap... nobody cares if they fuck it up making the movie, beacause of the shitty content... however, the dark tower is more like a metaphoric travel across the complex human existence, wich is very hard to put into images. It is like "Perfume", nobody really understand the character of jean-baptiste in the movie (not so in the book), they just take him as a Freakin' Psycho, and That's precisely what could happen with Roland D.
mmmgollito 2 years ago
Yea I could see hugh Jackman playing Roland I saw Australia as shitty as that movie was he reminded me of a aussie clint east wood

HJ would be a good roland. as would RC. but viggo mortensen would be the man, i think.
pfalky2k 2 years ago
I'm just now reading The Dark Tower books and first of all, yes it would be a tragedy if Christian Bale played Roland. That said i'm in the middle of book 6 and i can't wait to finish this epic story. By the way, who would y'all like to play Roland Deschain of Gilead, the greatest character of all fiction?
DeathMag84 2 years ago
christian bale has the tormented loner thing down well. as others have said, hugh jackman, russell crowe (a bit too stocky, perhaps?) viggo mortensen. just a shame clint eastwood is past this role. now there would have been THE gunslinger.
pfalky2k 2 years ago
Christian Bale isn't tall enough and doesn't have the "Cold Dead Blue eyes" that Roland has. Also, Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe would be a disgrace playing Roland
DeathMag84 2 years ago
bale's height is, sorry. WAS an unkown factor so i shall bow to your wisdom. crowe? don't see it. much too stocky. think jackman would get away with it. in the absence of eastwood? mortensen. i think. can't see any better than those two.
