  • Thumbs down. The fact that you put a watermark with a youtube link that will not exist 3 years from now on a news report that you can't find anywhere else is ridiculous.

  • No need for comparissons on which series was great; I think the Burton films and the Nolan films are awesome in their own way. Schumacher's on the other hand.....

  • This batman movie will always be the best one to me!!!!

  • Wow I was only 2yrs old when this came out and 4yrs old when I started watching the heck out of it up to this day. Its still my most favortie film of em all for me. I plan on buying the Hot toys keaton batman figure with the batmobile in honor of my love and memories I had for that time when I was a kid. Heck I'd still play with these toys... Can't wait.

  • Great video....awesome times!

  • Nicholson was fantastic in this. He should have lost about 20 pounds though

  • Ha, his 'cartoon craziness'.

  • Most of those tapes are now at Goodwill stores!

  • I like how unserious these people are about the film, probrably because memories of the Adam West series is going around. I mean, really, people spouting off names like "bat-boy" (it's pretty much common sense that it is Robin) and saying things like the film having "cartoon craziness". Not to mention the Ronald McDonald comparison. I guess respect didn't truly come till Nolan did TDK.

  • I disagree with those who say Burton's Batman films are better than Nolan's. Don't get me wrong, Batman 1989 was excellent. High grade stuff. But it can't touch The Dark Knight. I doubt the Dark Knight Rises will be as good either, but TDK will always have the edge on Batman 1989.

  • I can't compare them. I like them the same. Least favorite was Batman Returns.

The Joel Shumacher versions were just abominations O_o

  • @dgware

    TDK Sucks ass.

It's hardly even a batman movie.

  • @dgware - TDK has "the edge" on it? Why are internet folks so damn intent on making comparisons? Because they're Batman movies? They're just different takes, made decades apart.

I for one prefer the Tim Burton movies. I even prefer Batman Forever to both Nolan films - and I have nothing against the "darkness", I used to love the Killing Joke comic book growing up.

TDK is a hopelessly overrated and mediocre film, with a slight plot twist towards the end and a great performance by one actor.

  • Today DVDs usually come out around three months-four months after a theatrical release.

  • @hucklebuckle1990 NICE!!!

  • "The Joker Parks Here", LoL. I need to buy one of those signs.

  • They need to reply this in threaders. I'd totally watch it!

  • I remember my mom bringing me to Blockbuster to buy this on VHS when it came out. good times.

  • I Got This Video Batman 1989 VHS!

  • gary the bald reporter has such disdain for this assignment--'batboy what was his name' talking to the cardboard cutout--he's probably like "i'm a real fucking reporter you want me to talk about a VHS Batman movie! I read the Wall Street Journal!! You know what I read in the bathroom--HUSTLER, I cum to shots of bush not BATS!! FUCK YOU"

  • When i was 7 years old i saw this movie in theaters 4 times and i loved it! before that i bought some merchandise including magazine and shirts. My mom bought me the video for christmas as i watched it alot until i was 19 after graduation when i bought the DVD to throw the old tape away and now have it on Blu-Ray as it has great picture and cool extras.

  • I still have my vhs from when it first came out. Whenever I watch the movie now though, I watch the dvd, but I still hold on to that as a fond souvenier from my childhood

  • Keaton should reprise Batman in a version of Frank Miller's Dark Knight

  • @PonyboyInNewZealand How can we convince he and Tim Burton to do it one more time?? Seriously, I would LOVE for that to happen!

  • @AftermathRebel As much as I love Tim Burton, I don't know if he'd be the man to bring Frank Miller's version to life. I don't even think Burton would return the Batman universe anyway. It's hard to say. Miller's DARK KNIGHT is much grittier than anything Burton has ever done. Maybe a Tim Burton/Miller collaboration?

  • @PonyboyInNewZealand It wouldn't have to be an exact interpretation. More of an influence.

  • @AftermathRebel Hmm... I was under the impression the 1989 Batman film was inspired by Dark Knight Returns (at least the tone). I think to do a film based on Miller's Dark Knight and not do it literally (at least for the most part) might be pointless. Then again, it is Batman, and Batman always sells. ;-)

  • Burton should get off Deeps ass and come back to Batman!! COMING TO VHS?!?!?! CRAP I GOTTA FIND MY VCR!

  • @ColorsBright Depp... my mistake

  • Cool Local News On Batman I Got The Movie Batman (1989) On VHS And Blu Ray

  • Pretty much like now. Not too long after movies come out in theaters, before you know it, they're out on video or in nowadays case DVD & Blue-Ray & all that good stuff.

  • I remember at the time, you had to wait almost a year for the film to come out on vhs. now you wait for about 4-5 months for it to come out.

  • I've seen a clip from 1982 about how certain movies get pirated before they are released. Having such a short wait lowers the risk of pirating. Back then, Batman would have still been shown at second-run theaters four months after release and $25 for a movie vs. $2 for a second run showing was still a big deal, which still made sense.

  • Best Batman EVAR!!! :D

  • That is a really professional reporter "...batboy...or whatever his called" lol !

  • I still have my original VHS copy of the 1989 release of Batman, though I bought it in 1991.

  • I as well have my VHS from 1989. The day it came out.

  • Batman 89, Batman Returns, Batman Begins, and Dark Knight are the only true Batman movies

  • Ha, this was clearly recorded on an antenna broadcast.

I like all of the Batmans except for the batman and Robin movie. But my favs are the new ones.

Once again great post! Thanks for sharing these with everyone. I really love going back in time and looking back at these old broadcasts and seeing how much they've changed. Not to mention the fashion, and overall culture change.

    Peace

  • Of course, this is the best Batman movie. I still have that VHS, and I won't lie, I watch it at least once a year. Since 1990.

  • I love that Batimobile.

  • I still prefer this to the Dark Knight. Dark Knight tries to be too realistic and in turn forgets that it comes from a comic book. Batman 89 never takes itself seriously and seems more like a comic coming off the page.

  • I, too, prefer the Burton Batmans to the newer incarnations. I'd argue the point that they 'never took themselves seriously' though. They were pretty dark/deep movies (especially returns). They were just more fantastical than Nolan's work.

  • Batman 89 at least had the guy from Arliss as a comic relief character. I can't think of a comic relief character in TDK. The Joker's jokes are really the only thing that make you laugh in that movie and they're really not things you're supposed to be laughing at (lol).

I agree that Returns is way to dark, which is one of the reasons I prefer Batman 89 to it.

  • You can't tell me we're not supposed to laugh at the Joker in the nurse's costume. That is surreal comedy at its finest.

TDK is replete with dry, wry, and subtle humor, it's just not spoonfed to us through some slapstick, Jar-Jar-esque comic relief character.

  • WHAT ARE YOU?!?!

    ...I'm Batman ... :D

  • Batman (1989) is still one of my fav Batman movies. The Dark Knight comes in 2nd.

  • Batman, in glorious Pan & Scan. Hahaha!

Look how different it was 20 years ago. Theaters were still playing movies four months(?!) after they opened? Crazy!

BTW, 1989 Batman is STILL the BEST Batmobile.

  • What's so strange about that? I saw The Dark Knight in a theater in November, four months after it had initially opened.

  • Also, there is no need to pan/scan for videos converted from the 1:85:1 aspect ratio, which was the format of Batman (1989). The black bars at the top and bottom are simply removed, and you are actually seeing more than the director intended.
