great demo, just picked one of these up myself and instantly fell in love. you did forget to mention one very cool feature - switching the envelope to LFO mode, in which it repeats endlessly at a rate determined by the LFO speed. let's you create your own LFO shapes with the ADSR controls, basically.. every synth should have this!
still having probs making a good bass sound / kick drum. guess i just need to practice! sorry- new to this . wish there was close ups of your settings! man, that would help so much!
@stingrrr1 They do. Haha what are you talking about? It's just that idiots think they can make a digital synth or a MIDI controller sound as good as an analog synth, so you don't hear about them as much anymore.
one of the best demos ive ever seen, real easy to understand, good work! is it possible to use the bender wheel to change the speed of the vibrato, just like the good old 80s?!
I have a question about my Juno 106. Maybe you could help me.
My 106 seems to have a problem with the filter resonans after I had new voice chips. I can't seem to get all six voices to track even with keyboard tracking when the filter is self-osclating. If I set it to poly 2 mode and only use one voice at the time i am able to play simi tones with it, but when it is in poly 1 mode and I play more then one voice, the voices doesn't tune up together. How I could fix this?
This was a really informative video, not just for this synth, but for understanding synth programming in general. I learned something new. Thank you so much.
i remember a LONGG time ago i saw this video and the little thing you played after you say "SAW!" just stuck in my head cause it was such a good little riff. and since i hadn't seen this video in a long time i was looking up SH-101 videos till i found this one (by eventually putting in "analog synth")
Analog generates sound via properties of electricity, digital sound is generated via mathematical models converted to sound. Oscillators are the devices that generate the tones in synths, whether by electrical fluctuations (analog), or by mathematical models (digital).

I swear I hear the Parliament bass line for Flashlight in that thing. Nice demo BTW.
To those wanting one, this thing can probably be had for cheap as a virtual synth (computer program), with more power - many notes at once, no noise, no oscillator drift, more octaves at once, full MIDI control, etc. These days, 10 out of 10 experts can't tell the difference between the virtual and the real deal.
and where is the fun, the smell, the haptic experience? opening a vst/coreaudio/rtas plugin software package is just not sexy. Old gear rocks because it has soul. And because these old ladies sometimes behave like bitches. And the sound is still different. Make me the expert who can tell the difference between most VSTis and the real stuff (but not all).
read the eurythmics book and in 1983 they had not much money, they created sweet dreams are made of this completely on this synth/ with the help of a reverse reverb
I bought an SH09 in 1995 for £140 from a guy in glasgow. This little synth taught me alot about analogue synthesis,i spent hours and hours playing with this great sounding synthesizer.
I love analogue synthesizers,my first love being SID who lived inside the Commodore 64.
Thanks I checked out the MicrKORG, not my first choice but I'm on a budget and doesn't sound half bad at all getting that vintage fuzzy synth sound. Plus you can replicate a B3 if you connect a rotovibe.
awesome, i was waiting for you to mention the trick to make it sound like the MOOG, but looks like its my turn to teach you something, just plug a cable in the HEADPHONES entry and the other end of the cable to the AUDIO IN input and walla! you now have a MOOG. gracias de nada. otra cosa para la cancion de "i run" de the flock of seagulls y la de "sweat dreams" de eurhytmics (las 2 exitos por supuesto)se usaron un SH-09,
There isn't a difference: they're not comparable. Analog just means not digital, so old synths are analog by necessity. FM stands for Frequency Modulation, which is when you oscillate (change) the frequency rapidly which changes the tone.
Analog and FM aren't comparable per se. But when people talk about "analog synthesis" (which also doesn't exist) they commonly mean subtractive synthesis. You start with a couple of oscillators, adding filter and amplifier envelopes.
FM, on the other hand, uses (originally) only sine waves (later other waveforms too) which are frequency-modulated (hence the name) in complex chains. This is much harder to get a grip on than filters, making FM synths difficult to edit.
For me it's when things started going wrong! not sure of the physics but fm synthesis was the catalyst for the analogue/digital 'crossover' as it was hard to acheive with analogue circuitry. Classic example: Yamaha dx7. Good if you like metallic noises and exceptionally cheesey elec piano sounds.

It depends on your definition of "thin" (and everyone has one). Two oscs does not fat make, nor do sub oscs. Fatness is a subtle quality. If the SH-2 has it, the SH-09 has it. I believe they use the exact same oscillators and filters. In any case, the SH-09 was a less expensive synth aimed at a different market. Everyone doesn't get an SH-2 because they are comparatively quite rare. Thanks!
