  • Cool!

Where can I get one and for how mutch?

Also does it have MIDI and is that the ultra-beatdown font? o.o

  • @mit he

  • I like how you brought out that electric piano sound! very cool

  • Can two notes be played at the same time on this synth ?

  • I'm thinking of getting a synthesizer, would the SH-09 be a good beginner's synth?

  • sounds like old nintendo games. Ace!

  • great demo, just picked one of these up myself and instantly fell in love. you did forget to mention one very cool feature - switching the envelope to LFO mode, in which it repeats endlessly at a rate determined by the LFO speed. let's you create your own LFO shapes with the ADSR controls, basically.. every synth should have this!

  • I had one of these for years, on 32' hooked up to a reverb pedal, I nearly blew up a PA with a pitch bend!

  • Is this stuff still sold??? :D

  • thanks for this demo. helped me out big time!...:)

  • @009relic1 I'm glad I could help you out!

  • @AutomaticGainsay

still having probs making a good bass sound / kick drum. guess i just need to practice! sorry- new to this .

  • @AutomaticGainsay

still having probs making a good bass sound / kick drum. guess i just need to practice! sorry- new to this . wish there was close ups of your settings! man, that would help so much!

  • no original knobs?

  • @009relic1 Nope.

  • great job! will look back again i'm sure! just picked one up and found the original manual too! got both on ebay!

  • nice vid

  • That trick using the filter to generate tones is lovely. Thanks.

  • A Flock Of Seagulls used this synth for a couple of their songs. Awesome synth.

  • Will you have my babies?

  • @jeevespreston Yes.

  • I suddenly regret never reading the manual.........I am impressed how well you know this instrument.

  • @kodack10 Thanks!

  • love the intro music

  • @robfisher1 thanks!

  • why don' they produce any analog synths ;(

  • @stingrrr1 They do. Haha what are you talking about? It's just that idiots think they can make a digital synth or a MIDI controller sound as good as an analog synth, so you don't hear about them as much anymore.

  • @mattstank guess so...

  • one of the best demos ive ever seen, real easy to understand, good work! is it possible to use the bender wheel to change the speed of the vibrato, just like the good old 80s?!

  • This is my favorite synth....

  • Whats the average price of one of these?

  • @7endertelecaster £250 roughly

  • good vid !

  • i love you!!

  • @brainac0cult Well, I love you too. : )

  • I sold mine years ago and from all the keyboards I've owned, I miss my SH-09 the most.

  • That is so 80s

  • i got a sh-09 for sale

  • I fucking love this hardware.

  • Thankyou - nice instructive demo

  • is the SH-09 wireless? o.o

  • @sohc004 No.

  • is the SH-09 wireless? o.o

  • great into music, :)

  • @SuperJamesus Hey, thank you!

  • great video, what would the modern equivalent of this keyboard be? also is is a midi keyboard?

  • You are very helpfull, are all your videos like this?

  • @Obsidi0n Thank you, and yes. : )

  • awesome vid i just got a 9 and this really helped me expand its sonic capabilities + learn about synths

  • @cmart00 I'm glad I could help! Thanks for watching!

  • i got one and its FOR SALE

  • OK....I want one now!

  • 4:06 It's BOMBERMAN 64 Everybody!!! Eh eh? Agree? Thumbs up if you do. :)

  • THE VOLUME WOOOHOOO

  • This was a really informative video, not just for this synth, but for understanding synth programming in general. I learned something new. Thank you so much.

  • @ddominict Thank you, and thank you for watching!

  • are they making these again? they should

  • was this before of the sh 101?

  • Yes!

  • how much are these?

  • about €400-500

  • They're free if you can run fast while carrying heavy equipment.

  • @KevinDolin hahaha nice little laugh i had.

  • this is very good demo you play it very well

does anyone know where i could get one or an analog

synthesizer similar to this or should i just keep looking on the internet???

  • I'd really like to see some new videos, I love your demos.

  • GOD!

your playing is so freakin awesome and funky!

  • Thanks!

  • haha

i remember a LONGG time ago i saw this video and the little thing you played after you say "SAW!" just stuck in my head cause it was such a good little riff. and since i hadn't seen this video in a long time i was looking up SH-101 videos till i found this one (by eventually putting in "analog synth")

  • what is tune

  • which is better SH-2 or SH-9?

i heard they are almost identical?

  • SH-2 has two oscillators, so it's more powerful than the SH-09.

  • 2 questions whats the diff between digital and analog and what are oscillators and how do they work.thank u

  • Analog generates sound via properties of electricity, digital sound is generated via mathematical models converted to sound. Oscillators are the devices that generate the tones in synths, whether by electrical fluctuations (analog), or by mathematical models (digital).

  • and where is the fun, the smell, the haptic experience? opening a vst/coreaudio/rtas plugin software package is just not sexy. Old gear rocks because it has soul. And because these old ladies sometimes behave like bitches. And the sound is still different. Make me the expert who can tell the difference between most VSTis and the real stuff (but not all).

  • I don't think so man. You can tell the difference of course.

  • that thing is sick! i totally want one

  • Who would want a digital synth when an analog sounds so lovely?

  • Prodigy!

    I like it!

  • great presentation, thanx!

  • Roland makes the best synthesizers

  • Wicked synth.. I'm on the look out for one of these early SH boards.. wicked sound.

  • sounds very 8 bit-ish, like the old n.e.s

  • those are the best sounding synthesizers >,>

  • if the nes could make these sounds, then the sega megadrive is HD...

    lol

  • C64 could probably make these sounds.

  • i have a c64 i love it! the SID chip is the best sounding 8-bit sound divice... the filter are out of this world

  • c64 has digital fm synthesis

  • Uhhh... The SID chip was a hybrid between digital and analog. DOS could do FM if you had a SoundBlaster16 card.

  • you learn something new everyday!

    happy new year

  • @UnchainTheNight1

FM in SID? It's substractive synthesis with multimode filters, ring mod and PWM.

  • No, it was a 3-voice subtractive with digitally controlled analogue sound circuitry.

  • well presented! awesome

  • Thanks!

  • i like it how you tweaked that sick rave sound out of it.

Im on the lookout for a new synth, this one isnt quite it but it looks fun.

  • nice one

  • good demo good voice haha (it helps)

  • Thanks!

  • Nice to see someone demonstrating a synth that actually know how to use it/play.

  • Thank you!

  • read the eurythmics book and in 1983 they had not much money, they created sweet dreams are made of this completely on this synth/ with the help of a reverse reverb

  • The resonance on this little beast sounds delicious.

  • c'est bien mais iln' est pas midi

  • What was the song at the beginning? The guitaring.

  • 8:02 is very cool!

  • How much are these?

  • I NEED ONE OF Dese!

  • YES! This has put me back in the market for analog synthesizers!

  • how much would the Roland SH-09 Analog Synthesizer cost roughly (canadian or american)

  • I read that Chris Clark uses this synth. he has some of the best synth sounds in modern electronic music.

  • can you not play more than two notes at the same time with an analog synth?

  • Some analog synths are monophonic. Others have the ability to play 2, 4, or osme other number of notes.

    It depends on the model.

  • it depends if its monophonic or polyphonic

  • No arpeggio? :(

  • That's what your fingers are for. ; )

  • I would recomend a roland SH-09

  • 3:15 sick!

  • hey im thinkin of gettin a synth but i dont really know anything about them

anyone got any adivce on wat to kind to buy and any books or anything i can use to help learn how to play??

  • Go analog if you can afford it. If not, get the MicroKORG analog modeling synth. It is very versatile and easy to play.

  • Comment removed

  • I bought an SH09 in 1995 for £140 from a guy in glasgow. This little synth taught me alot about analogue synthesis,i spent hours and hours playing with this great sounding synthesizer.

I love analogue synthesizers,my first love being SID who lived inside the Commodore 64.

    Really enjoyed this video.

  • Does anyone know of any synths currently in production that have similar features/sounds?

  • Moog Little Phatty.

    Moog Yoyager.

    Dave Smith Prophet 08.

    Dave Smith Mopho.

    Korg MicroKORG.

    Alesis Ion.

The last two are not analog but they sound great and offer tweakability.

    There are others.

  • Thanks I checked out the MicrKORG, not my first choice but I'm on a budget and doesn't sound half bad at all getting that vintage fuzzy synth sound. Plus you can replicate a B3 if you connect a rotovibe.

  • This is fucking sick! I love the sound starting around 2:28

  • :) Tough you need a good soundcard.

  • Guess What!? Digital Synths have arrived!!

    lol

    xD

  • What? Wait a minute... when did THAT happen???

  • haha :D

  • Yea and they sound Digital.... analog sounds analog....

  • wait, it doesn't have a sine wave? D:

  • Sines are relatively rare as a feature on analog synths.

  • learn something new everyday :) cheers dude

  • awesome, i was waiting for you to mention the trick to make it sound like the MOOG, but looks like its my turn to teach you something, just plug a cable in the HEADPHONES entry and the other end of the cable to the AUDIO IN input and walla! you now have a MOOG. gracias de nada. otra cosa para la cancion de "i run" de the flock of seagulls y la de "sweat dreams" de eurhytmics (las 2 exitos por supuesto)se usaron un SH-09,

  • You should upload a video of the trick you describe. Would love to see that. Peace

  • @zpoyly you are a hero for posting this, just made this synth twice as good.

  • you'd probably have to use a usb cable.

  • There isn't a difference: they're not comparable. Analog just means not digital, so old synths are analog by necessity. FM stands for Frequency Modulation, which is when you oscillate (change) the frequency rapidly which changes the tone.

  • Analog and FM aren't comparable per se. But when people talk about "analog synthesis" (which also doesn't exist) they commonly mean subtractive synthesis. You start with a couple of oscillators, adding filter and amplifier envelopes.

FM, on the other hand, uses (originally) only sine waves (later other waveforms too) which are frequency-modulated (hence the name) in complex chains. This is much harder to get a grip on than filters, making FM synths difficult to edit.

  • For me it's when things started going wrong! not sure of the physics but fm synthesis was the catalyst for the analogue/digital 'crossover' as it was hard to acheive with analogue circuitry. Classic example: Yamaha dx7. Good if you like metallic noises and exceptionally cheesey elec piano sounds.

  • great vid man... saves me trying one of these out!

  • so funky, gotta get me one of these one day when i have the money, great demo as well, very detailed..

  • lovely sound!

    it's sort of a JP4 sound with MC-202 control isn't it?

  • wow cool synth

  • Great video man!

  • i agree with squeak ! Squeak for president!

  • HA! The last thing the US needs is ME for President. I think my "ahhhh screw the whole thing" position I often take might get in the way and possibly cause a few wars :):):)

  • i don't think the people will agree with the "give all your synths to president squeak" idea either.

  • best synth demo ever.

  • Thanks!

  • sounds killer !

  • The SH-09 has alot more bite than the sh-2.. Believe me, I've used both when playing with a band and the SH-09 cuts through the mix in a totally different way.

  • Very informative clip, nice to exactly know how some sounds are made (that sub bass!).

  • what a lovely bit of kit

  • this synth sounds so tinny and thin compared to my sh-2... i know mine has 2osc and a sub osc but why make the sh-09 then? why doesnt everyone get the sh-2?? great vid tho

  • It depends on your definition of "thin" (and everyone has one). Two oscs does not fat make, nor do sub oscs. Fatness is a subtle quality. If the SH-2 has it, the SH-09 has it. I believe they use the exact same oscillators and filters. In any case, the SH-09 was a less expensive synth aimed at a different market. Everyone doesn't get an SH-2 because they are comparatively quite rare. Thanks!

  • does anyone know where to get one of these there are none on ebay they sound amazing ive only got virtual analogs and a really shitty analog that has one lame oscillator

  • ive owned an sh-09 for about 10 years and never have been able to see in action the way that you have. kudos to you, sir!

  • What is this wonderful guitar music in the intro ??

  • Thank you! That's a song of mine called "Fraught." It is on the album I am going to release sometime this year.

  • Great! I was just about to ask the same question. Please let us know when you release it, I want one! And keep up the good work. Your channel is excellent.

  • thank you!

  • yesssss - i just got one for 325! been looking for months - most of the refurbed ones go for 800-1000 bones in japan - love ye olde' analogue. i heart it - great vid

  • man where the hell did you get on for 325?!

  • SH-09 rules!

  • I was originally out to buy a SH-101 but after seeing this, I almost like the sound better, it is very fat and offers up some really good bass tones.

Your videos are great man! keep em coming!

  • beautifullllllll

  • I really like your videos man. You've got really good style and obviously know what you're talking about. Good stuff and very technical information in here. I appreciate people like you coming on here and just showing how different each synth can be.

  • Hey, thanks a lot!

  • Ditto what yararu said, I just discovered your videos yesterday when I was browsing for Minimoog demonstration videos at work, and I've been watching every single one of your synth demos since! Thanks for doing this!

  • Thank you for watching!

  • yup! amazing videos!

  • man..its superb..love the vids..do u like produce ur own music.?? dy ahv a myspace site.?

  • can anyone tell me how much this thing cost right now?.thank you

  • Check out shsynths com, click on Roland SH-09 on the right, and scroll down

  • Check out shsynths com, click on Roland SH-09 on the right, and scroll down

  • you ve got to love it... compared to a moog, it sounds horribly plastic

  • it seems like this sounds much fatter than sh 101!

  • It has an aural characteristic the SH-101 seems to lack.
