While I agree that the money spent on this event could have been better spent on feeding and providing health care to the North Korean people, I also understand that events such as this help to lift the spirits of the people. Perhaps instead of building missile weapons "Dear Leader" could be taking better care of his people as well as host spirit lifting displays of national pride.
I know this kind of thing seems overwhelming and utterly alien the first time you see it, but trust me, as a conoisseur of this type of performance, the SOviets, along with the Eastern Bloc, were doing this ages ago. If you type in Spartakiad (Czechoslovakia), Moscow Olympics, Enver Hoxha (Albania) or The King of Communism (Romania), you'll discover this Mass Festival is in no way unique to North Korea..they just did it bigger and better than most - why, I don't know, it's a colossal waste.
