  • Thursday the 9th of July 2009 was a black day in the history of the Avalanche. One of the best players and definitely the most classy man ever on skates announced his retirement. We will miss you Joe. You are awesome and wonderful. Thanks for all the joy you brought to us and thanks for being a role model for so many kids. I will never forget what you did.

    I'm related to Joe's wife, who is my Aunt's daughter. For which Joe's wife is my cousin.

    So Joe is my 2nd cousin. Lol, Joe's mother in law who's my aunt lived in Swift Current Saskatchewan, where I live right now. Joe Sakic actually played on the Swift Current Broncos when he was in the WHL here in Canada back in 86-87, than being drafted into the Quebec Nordiques, eventually becoming Colorado. There's the story.

  • Sakic was born in Vancouver, BC and grew up in Burnaby. Sakic's parents were Croatian, but I don't think Sakic has any doubts where he is from. Sakic is as Canadian as they come, and he is one of the greatest hockey players of all time.
