These blocks somehow fascinated me when I was little. I think there was another skit with Grover and a bunch of blocks. I think Grover was running back and forth with them for some reason. I remember he was out of breath and of course, very dramatic. I wish I could find that clip! Of course, I last saw this over 30 years ago, so I could be mistaken.

This is a cute little segment with my lovable, furry old pal, Grover, and the well-meaning Herbert Birdsfoot (voiced by my main man, Jerry Nelson).

The end is funny: "But I do not know how to count oranges! Ohh!" Well, of course, since the blocks were different colors and the oranges are the same color. Frank Oz was, and is, a master puppeteer!

I remember this fondly. Lines like '...cute little building...' and the punchline 'But I do not know how to count oranges!' really stand out in my mind after all these years.

The other thing thats neat, is how when he says "but I do not know how to count oranges" his voice is breaking up just slightly making it seem like he is about to cry ... very VERY good puppeteering there!

I also like how he is so melodramatic with the "Oh!" at the very end!

I answer:

Because kids when they are still young do not yet understand the idea of conservation of quantity.

If you take a glass of water and pour it into a taller thinner glass, most kids at a young age ... will tell you that there is MORE water than there was before.

So with the blocks, the idea is that no matter what shape, same number of them.

You're not too bright.

Maybe that is an odd way of saying he hates citrus fruits. LOL

Maybe Grover could count them if Herbert moved the oranges in different places like the blocks.

My theory is that since the three blocks are different while the three oranges look alike, Grover was afraid he'd count at least one of the oranges twice without meaning to.
