Last question...(I swear!) I've played for 30 plus years but never biased an amp. Always had a tech do it. If I buy the matched set from her, will it need biased? And if so, any pointers on doing it? Thanks! You've been a huge help!
@JCM800X4 THEORETICALLY a properly matched quartet of EL34's will drop right in and be perfectly fine but fine tuning the bias will yield a slightly better sound if you play the amp cranked to the point where the power tubes really start getting pushed. at low volumes, you wouldn't notice much difference.
I don't have any experience biasing the XTC but there is an internal trim pot for bias voltage adjustment located by preamp tube v10 that a screwdriver fits down into
Thanks for the response. Obviously the head is used (I just bought it two weeks ago) I absolutely love the amp other than the noise. I've suspected all along it needs to be retubed. Thats my next step. Thanks man. And just to let you know, your demo of this head sold me on it. Keep up the good work!
@JCM800X4 haha I get that a lot. For your tubes, go to valvequeen and get them from her. She's a friend and has the best testing/matching in the business. Tell her I sent you. I've bought the last 4 or 5 re-tube kits from her and not one bad tube. Also, unlike the other sellers, she burns in and tests all the power tubes and matches them AFTER burn in.
Do you find your classic is noisy in the "old" setting? Mine has a terrible hum when switched to the old setting. And of course....thats my favorite setting on the amp. I think mine has an issue I need to have it serviced.
@JCM800X4 that is strange. Mine was quiet in all settings. Have you tried swapping the power tubes out? I'm not sure exactly what happens with that switch but from what I gather, it has something to do with the way the power tubes operate maybe?
A cheaper solution potentially would be to try swapping preamp tubes. Not sure if they affect that or not but they're inexpensive enough that it may be worth a shot. Good luck!
tokai ftw, what model do you have got there? ive got a 70s loverock, tobaccoburst and p90 but im looking forward to get haeussel oder bareknuckle custom p90 sized tozz or holy diver in there
@FastRedPonyCar yeah, which ones? ive got the rebel yell set at my edwards japan made les paul and in a few weeks some aftermath at both of my seven string baritones.
@c4tze haha not bare kunckles, Sheptone brand Brian Kahanek signature pickups. Though I do have a painkiller bridge pickup in my JP6 that I LOVE and had a nailbomb in my carvin which was also good.
@Killerjoe78 no this is a combination of mics on the cab and an avantone CK1 mic up on my desk capturing room audio. Camera mics (even the high end cameras) are useless when trying to record such loud stuff.
In your opinion, what percentage of your tone's gain is attributed to the overdrive pedal, and how much would you say is the actual Bogner?
I've seen vids of the ecstasy getting pretty gnarly, (and you can get a gain mod done to the amp through Bogner) but I've emailed the company and they've said to go with the Uber for high gain. (I've already got a Diezel Herbert for that)
I'm looking for an Alice in Chains type tone/distortion out of the amp.
@monox2k you can do the mod yourself actually. it's called the marvel mod and there's a guy on the bogner forum that sells the little circuit that you solder 2 wires onto a resistor on the circuit board. I didn't get any demos of the amp with this but it basically just adds a bit more gain and has a 3 way switch to bypass, select the factory gain mod or the cameron gain mod
anyways, the amp does a great cantrell type gain but you can also get that from a modded JCM800 too for faaar cheaper
@FastRedPonyCar Yeah, I know. The Shiva is basically a hotter jcm800 that has the cool mid driven Bogner overdrive as well, but I've reviewed and looked into a ton of amps recently, and I'm pretty set on the ecstasy. Unfortunately there are no dealers near me, so I have to go on clips and reviews.
Your tone is fucking beastly in this vid. (At least with an OD pedal lol)
Want to do a short clip of some hard rock with high gain in Eb or drop C#? (With no OD)
@monox2k Sold the amp last week :( awesome amp and tone but I kept gravitating back towards my nitro. just a personal preference. XTC was too smooth/compressed for my own liking.
@monox2k about $2400. average going price for a classic model. I tried the 20th anniversary model and didn't feel like it was worth near it's massive premium over the 101b or classic.
@nikkisixx9sixx this one is for sale. message me if you want it. I installed the marvel mod which allows you to switch over to mark cameron's mod, the bogner factory 2004 mod or bypass all together.
Killer tone...i know these cameras have trouble capturing the punch factor or chug of the low end during palm mutes. Does this amp have it??? I ove the character of the drive on this amp and if it does the low end chug, pushing air thing, then I think I just found my new amp.
@TheLonetone483 this amp can do a LOT of things really well and it's loud but it's not a big in your face power delivery. It's refined and smooth and sits really well in a mix. The nitro on the other hand hits you like a dump truck but it's difficult to control the power/volume. It's unreal on stage but requires some finess to get the volume balanced right and the low end dialed in. the bogner is much more civilized and flexible but doesn't punch you NEARLY as hard as the nitro.
@philipkors Both very good but very different. XTC has more lower gain sounds that I needed for my cover band project. Cerberus has better high gain sound and more saturation and 3 separate channel EQ's vs the XTC's shared eq for the 2 overdrive channels.
real Klon? :-)...Yeah it's a bit fizzy on the tops there but as you said not really meant for metaall!.....On a different note..what's that little cam your using for the clip....Good to see you tubing again :)
I think the fizz is from me not really doing any testing of the mic positioning. I just put a couple of mics on the cab and hit record. The greenmachine that was mic'd though does have a lot of upper end sizzle to it. That may be why. It's actually incredibly smooth in the room but still clean and cutting. Bright but not abrasive.
Thanks!

@FastRedPonyCar Yeah, to each his own.
Like I said, I have a Diezel for my metal needs; now I want a hard rock amp with versatility.
The Diezel could do any type of rock and excel at it, but I want the thick, woody Bogner sound lol.
How much did you sell for, if you don't mind me asking?

You are living proof of how most amps can get a great metal tone if you "know how to use it."
TMF58 9 months ago
@TMF58 yeah man the boost is the real trick to getting it. the amp alone is a little too thick and compressed. boost cleans it up just right.
