My grandfather flew a P38 and P40s out of New Guinea, lost an engine when oil ran out, and crash landed one in the desert and had to hoof it cross country back to base... he's in a video... do a search for 'Blue Two' his call sign... still alive in Franklin, TN
I think the Corsairs chewwed through the Zeros in the end, with a claimed 11 to 1 kill ratio... so theirs probably quite a lot of Zeros at the bottom of the ocean to be found. The Japanese pilots hated the Corsair, and named it 'the whistling death' after the noise the air going into the radiators on the trailing edge of the wing made. Cost of one Corsair back then: $1.5 million U.S.
Thats a A6M2 wreck > planes that been under water in the pacific for 60 or so years cant be flown again but the aircraft is good for patterns to build a new one.
That wreck is worth probably allot of money. Someone should restore it. Thanks for the video, very nice to look at. I wonder if the pilot ever flew again or died ashore.

Anybody know the history of this aircraft? Plans to bring it up etc etc??

no bullet holes? guess they wanted to ditch a perfectly good plane.

I doesn't matter what condition the plane is in, if it runs out of fuel you don't have a choice, you have to ditch
