That is aweful!!!! I am in ARBA but we have STIFF rules we have to check our bunnies health often rabbits are not supposed to be taken away from their mama 'till 6 to 8 weeks. But Lajia is wrong they have a deformaty called Max factor kits (baby bunnies) the one she hods does not have it but rabbits should open their eyes around 10 and 11 days. Visit ARBA website look at the standard of perfection outlaw animal dealing like these people on the streets but please don't outlaw ARBA!!!

The general rule of thumb is 7 - 10 days, but it could take as long as 14 and we have seen the cases where rabbits opened their eyes at 3 to 4 days old. It's all relative. In addition, please be informed that we at Bunny World Foundation consider breeding primitive, unnecessary, cruel, and exploiting at this time and age, especially of animals that are being euthanized by thosands every second....

Another option. Signs reminding people that while the turtles are cute they have salmanilla (spelling) and anyone handing them could end up in the hospital or at worst case death from salmanilla porisening.

If you see cruelty you should stop it. If I could go their I would just grab the cage and run. If they tried to stop me I would hit them really hard with a bat or other club I would carry. It is everyones responsibility to stop this. Just confiscate them and take them to the nearest vet. Layla should stop taking pictures and take a security force with her and take the bunnies. End of story. I would spray them with pepper spray too. See how they like it. They should be shot or beaten.

@theart1rm -- if anyone but the police takes those bunnies from them, it's a felony, and you can be arrested. PLUS, the illegal animal vendors are very much protected by store owners and members of the gangs (18th street??) and more...this is not an easy issue. I would NEVER suggest to anyone to snatch the animals from the vendors directly. You will be attacked by the mob. The LAPD needs to collaborate with the authoritiies not just to ARREST the offenders but to PROSESCUTE AND DEPORT THEM.

@BunnyWorldFoundation All I have to say about this comment is that this is America. Their are laws. This is a cess pool of shame, best thing to do with it is to just shut the whole area down. A felony to rescue an abused animal, not where I come from. Not an easy issue. That's because the law won't enforce the law which leaves lawlessness, which means citizens have to take action Hatfield & MaCoy style - works every time. If you can recall, BWF is the only organization that's effectively pulling animals from downthere and their president the only "citizen" that almost got killed for making an attempt to do something and draw attention to the media...now, how do you propose we go ahead and do something drastic without putting our members at risk??

@BunnyWorldFoundation I don't have an answer to that. I just heard about Santee Alley a few days ago, & as with anything dealing in bunny cruelty I get very emotional. I spoke without having a clear understanding of the magnitude of the problem, how serious it is, how dangerous. True, drastic action that I mentioned would put BWF members at risk. It saddens me greatly that this continues to happen daily.

I am not backing down on what I said I would do if I had money I would make it happen.

Bunny World gets a call EVERY DAY from someone who bought a baby bunny and experienced just that....people are in so much disbelief that it doesn't even occur to them to take the bunny to the vet to euthanize it....bunnies seizure in their arms. it's a shock to anyone who experiences it. Sorry you had to watch it, but direct that energy to those who are repsonsible for doing it and those who are able but not willing to stop it. :(

@BunnyWorldFoundation No you are not doing enough. You go in with security teams, take the rabbits. They are illegals, What are they going to do, go to the police. I don't think so. Go in armed with pepper spray. Hit them hard, take the bunnies. Use blood hounds to hunt them down after pepper spray to their lair & take all the rabbits. If you are their & aren't doing that much then you are not doing enough. Make the vendors police their own. Use stink bombs so no one will come to Santee Alley.

I tried that two years ago minus stink bombs and blood hounds and almost got killed...but, you let us know how your experience goes...please. we would love to hear it. Even PETA turned back on this case...too dangerous. How exactly do you propose it be handled...legally. They are more organized than LAPD and they have more resources. Animals are only ONE little thing they are doing on top of counterfeit goods, drugs, child labor, etc.

@BunnyWorldFoundation I don't know how to advise legally except that it is again the law & Cops should be their every day stopping it. I know you put yourself at risk when you go their. I wouldn't go their like you have been I would go their strictly as a commando unit with an armed security team. Considering it war. Any vendor with animals pepper spray straight in the face right up, animals confisicated. Units stationed at exits with hounds to chase after anyone trying to excape with animals.

@theart1rm Tell it to the LAPD - i got their number.....the arrest people regularly, but becuase the jails are overcrowded, they release them the next day. Yes, there are laws that protect animals, those people are committing felony, animal cruelty, BUT, they LAPD's hands are tied, because the prosecutors, judges don't deem it important enough to implement charges ...if they do, it's very rare, hence the situation continues. They should implement more serious fines, and deport them. But how?

1. Make selling live animals their illegal.

2. Fine anyone buying a live animal from their as they are participating in illegal trade. (Just like buying illegal drugs). With confiscation of animal and threat of possible jail time.

3. Make sure signs are posted warning buys of consequences of 2nd option.

& I'm still thinking.

I know my rationale may seem a little extreme, but these are people breaking the law & being allowed to continue to do so. Stink bombs are the quickest way to stop all activity, shuts everything down. Another way is to go for an all-day-strole with pet skunks on a leash. You have to disrupt activity, chase away the shoppers. Appears to me that the police are protecting the illegals not the animals.

@BunnyWorldFoundation I know that. Sorry I was harsh with my comments. Believe me if I had the money, the means, I would be their taking action. Another stategy, have members, volunteers stand at the entrances/exits with picket signs reminding people not to buy live animals their, that they could themselves become at risk of animal cruelty charges because the bunny/animals are sick at time of purchase & already need medical attention. The law is big on saying "Ignorance is no excuse".

@ItsCalledHonesty - It is sad. Unfortunately, the other baby died a few months later, it had zillion issues. It is a horrible crime what goes on at Santee Alley and the entire LA Fashion District. The laws are not in animals' favor. It's illegal immigrants unfortunately who are committing these crimes and cannot be arrested due to lack of legit IDs, domicilles and all other issues pertaining to jail system, mafia, as well as authorities sometimes siding withe those criminals. Very complex..
