They were a Simon and Garfunkel, a Lennon and McCartney --only Elton did the singing and Taupin did MOST of the writing. Not all, Elton always had the final say. So it's just another song writing partnership. He gave the lyrics meaning, and he never tried to hide how it really was. He just didn't want to change a good thing.
