Making your own Potassium Chlorate is a veery bad idea. Especially with those amounts, you just use one unclean spatula or container, and you'll have to be lucky to lose but an arm.
I would like to add as potassium chlorate is a strong oxidiser any and all contaminates makes it a bit hazardous to mess so its best to have clean strong product
@marcomovies97 yes, but the graphite in the pencils are smaller, therefore it will not last long in a the cell... but of course.... you may buy solid graphite pencils ;)
Sodium chlorate is a little more dangerous to handle than Potassium chlorate. One of the reasons for this is because NaClO3 is more hygroscopic. Chlorates and perchlorates were used to make Aluminum flash powder. Armstong's mix can detonate because of heat and from percussion as well. Ammonium perchlorate was used as rocket fuel and KClO3 is still used to make colored smoke. Great care should be taken when KClO3 and the presense of oxidizables (such as C,S,P,Al, Mg,Mn...etc). Great video.Thanks.

ok i am really confused do i connect the carbon electrodes to the positive wire of my dc supply or the negative? i have it set up so that the carbon one is bubbling hydrogen
Hmmm good cell, but how about not using the epoxy on the carbon rods ? since they erode, i belive you should rather make something that can be easily changed afterwards.
1. The Potassium will take the place of the sodium.
2. 2Cl+ 2NaOH=====> 2NaOCl + H2
3NaOCl +HEAT===> NaClO3+ 2 NaCl
NaClO3+ KCl===> KClO3+ NaCl
3. You will not get Sodium hydroxide from electrolyte a solution of sodium chloride, only sodium hypo chloride - the hypo chloride decompose at high temperature to chlorate at about 60c
@crankflip94 It's just to protect you from dangerorus gases. Do it outside, btw: My cell wasn't air- sealed, I had a hose from my cell so that the gases could reskape, you dont want to make your cell to a bomb.
@IGpskillI In theory it should, but you do get a lot of sodium carbonate, and that can be a problem. I would do this instead: NaClO3+ KCl / KNO3 - its makes the crystallization much easier. - you can buy Potassium chloride as LoSalt or any mineral salts that has a lot of potassium in it about 50%, you can do a crystallization to get almost pure potassium chloride
@ErikDIY i like your accent, where are you from? so after you cook up the stuff in the jar with the electrodes you filtered out the stuff. is the stuff that was in the plastic jug thing?
i know how to make the stuff and i did, its filtering and purifying it that i dont quite understand in your vid. can you please put it into writing. like step one after electrolyzing the bla bla bla, pour it thru a filter save or discard the filtrate and keep the liquid for example.
BTW if you use "Hot melt adhesive" you could glue the electrodes much faster and you don't have to bother with toxic fumes.
Do you check out nurdrage channel? I think he is going to make PbO2 electrodes which are very resistant to corrosion. You could make perchlorate from that.

how do you get the carbon from the batteries?
when i try it (with D-cells) the carbon either breaks or is stuck to the inside of the container

can you use two metal bars for anodes
dbflat987654321 1 year ago
@dbflat987654321 NO!... This is because they will react with the solution and produce oxides, instead of hydrochloride/chlorate....
For example, if you use iron rods you will then gen iron oxide, the same for all the other metals.
The only anodes you can use are, graphite/patina/MMO, and Lead dioxide...
The cheapest way is to use carbon/graphite electrodes, they are cheap and easy to get :D

You can buy it at electronic store.

@ErikDIY By air-sealed I meant controlled release of gasses, not completely air-tight. I'll probably do this outside

@crankflip94 Sorry for misunderstanding.
I didn't bother, but you could make the gases go true a solution of sodium hydroxide
2Cl+ 2NaOH=====> 2NaOCl + H2

NaClO3+ KCl===> KClO3+ NaCl

Kor mangen volt eller amps trenger jeg og er det dødlig vis du får støt xD?
PS: bra film 5/5*
skybattle2 1 year ago
@skybattle2
Det holder at du bruker en ATX (pc supply)
For at en ATX skal fungere må du ta den grønne og koble den til den svarte, da vil viften begynne.
Etter det kobler du den røde og den svarte etter det som sies i videoen.
Du trenger ca 5v for "chlorate"
Du får ikke støt eller dør av 5-12 volt. Du må ha en mye høyere spenning for at de skal skje. bare vær forskiktig rundt 230v ac (stikkontakten)
Hvis det er noe mer bare så er det bare å spørre :)

Hi
Old news now XD
I know that graphite is carbon and clay ( if I can remember right)
There batteries is sink- carbon batteries, so I should have listened to it.
Graphite is also harder than carbon, the carbon electrode will just "etch" faster than a graphite electrode.

Halla naturfaen, fint navn XD
