Bradfords bill only serves to punish ordinary every day parents, and does nothing to prevent child abuse above and beyond existing law. Bradford needs to respect the democratic will of the people, and this law needs to go. Focus on the REAL causes of child abuse instead of wasting time, and save some kids.

The level of racism, violence, and political corruption in New Zealand was disturbing. It is a nation with two faces, one to the outward world of clean green friendly Kiwis. And the other dark side. Many Kiwis would readily identify U.S. foreign policy as violent, militaristic, and authoritarian. But when it came time to identify the same trends in their own society they were suddenly blind. Plenty of nice people, but no paradise.
I lived in NZ from September 06 to February 07, during which time the "child smacking" law was widely debated. I was absolutely amazed that a nation that presents itself to the world as a country of intelligent and law abiding people were enthusiastically debating the merits of a law that would prevent parents from claiming the necessity of child discipline as a defense against assault charges on their children.
I don't think otherwise. I think more needs to be done to counter that stat. It's one of our more repugnant stains. My problem is that somebody said that we are "...violent, militaristic and authoritarian"; how so? Our military is tiny and we leave aside only 1% (might be 3%??) of our annual budget on the army. How are we authoritarian? MMP doesn't allow for it.
