Some of these are definitely overpriced. That Little Sister record is not in NM (looks VG+ at best) was a Top 25 hit, so it's not that rare, and typical VG+ records are $4 (price guide) from that era. And, that Juicy Fruit is a different song than the Mtume version. But it looks like there are better places to get bargains. And, I do agree with what it says on your undershirt!
Much love. this has got to be one of the greatest resources for listening to samples and understanding loops outside of having access to all of that yourself. Thanks bro.
A1 records is on my to do list when I'm going to NYC and that hopefully will be around november, can't wait! You got any other record stores in NY you can recommend funktuall? love your videos btw
There's still music made entirely live and with no samples...check on youtube: superpaolo: mr groove..no samples there, just musicians and its so so funky
I was staying in Manhattan for a while recently while doing a student exchange from London and a friend who has a huge music knowledge took me to A-1 Records. If I could have, I would have taken so many records back home with me from there. When I move to New York, it'll become a regular spot for me!
Also, love the videos Funktual, thank you for making them. Keep up the good work!
sooooooooooooooooo........... can I borrow MY Straight To Hell record xD I DID sub with all 3 of my accounts. haha I may switch accounts now and then, but damnit I can't miss any Funktuall
Yo funktual, loving the work and dedication to the funk. I thought i knew a bit about music before i came accross your videos, i clearly dont.
In your videos you played two tracks which i couldn't hear who they were buy. One was a sample used by Fatboy Slim in 'praise you' and the other was a track called taxman by again i dont know who. Im quite def
Did you even watch his original video talking about the donations? He came right out and said that this was what the money was for... So he could support his family by making more videos for us, the fans.
I have a question Funk. Do you listen to The Coup? (just thought maybe you would because you do love funk and The Coup = The Roots (Some live instruments I mena) + Public Enemy + Funk)
Kill My Landlord and Genocide & Juice are seriously funky.
I have liked what I have heard and wanted to get the albums but never did. If given the choice b/w old and new I always pick old. Has it's drawbacks at times. I'll peep them out again though, their reputation is quite good.
Right on. I recently was able to get all their singles from Kill My Landlord so I have all the funkafied remixes and the extra dope Instrumentals (as well as the one for Fat Cats, Bigga Fish)
@funktuall Great vid. Im green with envy ! It would take years or a big pile of cash to get those 7s together over here in England. What did they cost you roughly ?
Was that "Heat you up - cool you down" instrumental in the background? I went to A1 in 1997. The shop was then run by an English guy (from Wolverhampton I think) I purchased:- Voices Of East Harlem "Right on be free" and Blue Note Demo 7" of Ronnie Laws "Always there" They had two decks to play try the vinyl out on and they were both terrible sound quality. I first heard "Agua de beber" by Frank Sinatra in A1 - still love that version to this day! I stayed at 92 McDougall & Bleeker.
Damn this makes me want to move to New York so bad! If I had money or a hook up, I would move there in a heartbeat. The price of living is just insane. It seems like you have to be rich to be poor in NYC. Some day...
dont mean to be a prick of anyhting but we all feeling the pinch,im out of work, why should we send money for him to pay for trips to ny and buy records,no offence, love what he's doing and all, but everyones got problems
Man, It's so exciting whenever I see that you've made a new vid. This one was a bit different....but that's great ! It's inspiring me to make my own videos one day, about the places that are important to my life as well. Appreciated!
I'm a slow ass, and haven't sent my $5 yet. BUT BROTHER I PROMISE I WILL,I GOT THE ENVELOPES OUT AND EVERYTHING! If it makes you feel any better...I still haven't sent my grandma her Christmas card! I'll send you an Xmas card 2 !
Wish I knew a place like this. The only one I know of in Canada is the one place in Vancouver... but I'm not in BC, I'm in Ontario, I guess there must be one in Toronto but none that I've heard of.
Damn I wish Hawaii had more places like this. We've got like 3 decent places on the isle.. but the selection is pretty horrible. Damn I would love a copy of some Teddy P, Zapp, Edwin Starr, this list could go on aaaalll day. Hah!
Will definitely stop by the shop if I ever make my way to NYC. And that is a must.
