His standing reach is 9'7". A basketball has a diameter of 9.39 inches. And in order to get a clean dunk, you have to get the whole ball above the rim. So, using advanced math, I conclude that at the bare minimum, Yao has to jump 5 inches to touch the rim, plus 9.4 more inches to get the ball over the rim, a minimum of 14.4 inches to just barely dunk. And if you can only barely dunk, you won't dunk in games. I'd say Yao has a vertical of at least 20 and at most 24 inches. The NBA avg is 28 in.

Note that most of his dunks are uncontested, he has nice range for a big guy but that's where it all ends. If you jump with him he gets scared.He gets winded too early, and he stays on the injured list. The only reason he keeps making the allstar team is because of the huge Asian community. Now he is not expected to play next season. I'm a Houstonian and I say he goes, and he can take that McGrady garbage with him.
