if you like trains try this games:Trainz 2009,2010,Microsoft Train Simulator,Rail Sim,etc...

Trainz series have a lot of custom content made by fans,pretty acurate and lots of it...i recommend to buy this games if you like them ,(if you like them and you cant afford them try piratebay).

Also look in Google for the sites that has content from your country to drive your local trains.

One question - what did you use for the smoke?

i used facing particles from a PFscource, with a opacity map, making them into smoke puff's.

there's a little tutorial at the 3dtotal website, and its about making firework effects, that has most of the info you would need. ;)

lol at the 1337 on the tender, you should try some Mechanical CAD software, its much more hardware intensive so you need a gd comp but with your skills you could make some really nice and accurate animations that involve CFD and full physical analysis

I'm trying to make a train myself in 3DS Max 9, how did you do the Walschaerts Valve Gear? A bone system?

I'm doing mine with Dummys & Constraints, but I get stuck in a constraint loop at the Union Link (the vertical rod between the upper and lower pistons)

i tried different systems and came to the conclusion of just keying it in 36 steps (every 10 degrees) and having it set to relative repeat, this worked the best, without glitches

Very beutiful Model, I like the Locomotive's cosmetic aperince, red and black. And the buffers on the pilot beam are interesting. Allthough the tender looks a bit off. Also your cylinders are missing their sheeting.
