  • possibly one of my favourite songs ever, I remember first hearing this at the university radio station while my friend was DJing

  • CFNY ~The Spirit of Radio~

    Brampton farmhouse. RIP.

  • Jesus, after almost 30 years to just get this song with a simple search on YouTube blew me away...

I was in Grade 13 in Rexdale so we got CFNY coming in from Brampton nice and strong... I learnt the song and used to sing it at U of T and people asked who wrote that "unbelieveably depressing song...?"

  • I've been trying to find this for years too. I tried to contact Allan Cross at CFNY who was said to have a copy, but he never got back to me. I remember them playing this song or the song Toast (remember that one?) almost every morning for a long time. It's so good to hear it again! Ah memories of when CFNY wouldn't play the same song twice in one day! Oh for those days again! I can't listen to it now.

  • YES! 1979 or 1980, back in the old CFNY days (remember Brad MacNally and the 4 to 5 show - history of rock) I finally found the song as part of this comp. LP I found at the Vortex used:

Toronto Calling - (various incl Arrows, Bong Fury etc) 1981 Elmocambo Records - ELMO-759.

Check Vortex various artists section to see if they might have 2nd copy or else Ebay.

I got a copy of Government - Zippers On Fire 7" EP off Ebay.

btw Streetband 'Toast' featured Paul Young (Where I Lay My Hat -No Parler)

  • I really like this video! Johnny Carson had good taste! Save to faves. . .

  • WOW..never thought I would hear this one again. I still have "Toronto Calling" on vinyl in a box in the basement. Always loved this toon and I thought "I wanna be in commercials was pretty good too.

  • I emailed Andrew after I googled him forever to find ut where he was and he sent me the mp3 for this song. Ripped from the original so the quality is very poor.

  • Spoke to Andrew Nicholls tonight via email. Damn decent chap. Such a great song!!

  • Thank you for posting that. I've also been looking for that song for years. After its initial rotation, CFNY used to play it every father's day, and if I caught it, that was the only time I got to hear it. It's genius! I'm going to get a copy from Amazon!

  • Nice Video =]

  • WOW! Thank you! Thank you! Merci! Meri! What a gift!!! How many years did we wonder who you were and what you guys looked like too!!!!

    Forever embedded in my head!

  • Love this song. It's one of those that grab you from the first note. Never heard it before stumbling upon it here, but now it's one of my all time favorites.

  • I think there are at least two different recorded versions of this. Was it ever an actual disc?

Love the guitar work at 3:50 - reminds me of Fripp stuff on Eno's 'Before and After Science'!

  • Right you are -- Canadian radio played basically a home demo of it for 6 months, then El Mocambo Records gave us a few grand to re-record it ("Toronto Calling," ElMo Records # 759, 1980. Sometimes on eBay) The guitar bit is played with an eBow, which mimics the sustain of Frippertonics. Best -- Andrew + Darrell

  • Holy crap, I have this on vinyl my daughter loves it and makes me play it all the time. Please say it's available digitally. The pics on the sleeve were shot at the old Zing burger place on Victoria Park in Scarborough Ontario that was finally torn down a few years ago.

  • Available digitally? You bet: on Amazon and iTunes!

  • Do you know where to get that demo version? I think it was better than this one and it's how I remember it. It had an immediacy to it that this version lacks, IMO, and the bells on the end were haunting.

  • I have a copy of the demo version that was probably last played around late 1981 from an aircheck of the final McNally Masquerade. The only blend over is the station "radioradioradioradio' station ID where they were trying to hit the post that night.

  • @Andrewjn15 - Wow... it's been 31 years since I heard this song while hanging out at UofG. Knew it would show up eventually on the internet. Thanks for posting. This should have been a Juno or Grammy or better!

    What a trip man!!

  • CFNY-FM - The Spirit of Radio! MAN What a trip! WHat a find! I have been looking for this song since I first heard in back in the UofG in ''79. Absolutely excellent song. I love the Brian May lick @ 3:50. This is one of the keepers from the CFNY days when they were in the attic with Marsden. I am off to amazon to get this. I am also looking for other great tunes from the Eclectic Spirit show... one was a song that started off with drips of water that slowly turned to waves on the beach.

  • Nice One

  • Canadian radio ruled in the early 80's. I'm a huge stones fan but "Emotional Rescue' was nothing compared to the clash "london calling" and I remember this song and taping the last 3 minutes of it off the radio. Been looking for it ever since then ! Thanks for the video and one of the best songs ever written.

  • Wow, it's been 25yrs+ since I heard that.

I've got a Dave Marsden Saturday Night Show on tape somewhere. Taped the whole show, commercials and all...1978-79 maybe. Devo, Gary Numan, The Monks etc...

  • Dude, post that tape to the CFNY tribute site. That is pure gold.

  • Great song! please post some more of Nobby Clegg records. I like the accent by the way!

  • Well kid, you've officially restored my faith in the youth of the world. You are one cool dude.

  • AAHHHH CFNY, way back--when music and art, lived happily co-joined, at the skull--this was one of the great memories-powerful folk tale--I think it struck a chord--and now to realize it was a couple o skit-gag writers--had me totally fooled--cheers though--it really worked in the period..mood piece--momento mori-excellent work-long live the spirit of radio!!--Now if we can only download those hour long Marsden programs like the acid experience etc etc

  • wish i could find this or i wanna' be in commercials on limewire. where can i get an mp3 of this?

  • Despite what CFNY thought in 1981 ( number 37 ? ), "I Wanna' Be in Commercials" was the real hit.

  • This is the best song ever written. The b&w images in the video are perfect. Great to see the rare photos of the band as well. 'nuff said. Thanks Andrew!

  • Must be Irish.:)
