Gilmour is good but not the best guitarist in the world. I listen to a vast number of bands from the 60's and 70's like The Beatles, Cream, Pink Floyd (obviously), Buffalo Springfield, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, etc. I've listened to each band and more live and in the studio a lot and the top 3 guitarist from those bands are Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page but my favorite live band is and always will be Pink Floyd. RIP

@beergut66 He's not overrated for fuck's sake. Have you listened his music, or better yet, tried playing his songs and looking at the guitar tabs? From a guitarists perspective, his music is truly unique and it still stands today as some of the most original and innovative guitar playing there is. It's been decades since his death and after all the contemporary artists have tried imitating his sound, there's still nobody like him.

You think he's best because so many people agree with you, but if I were to say that he's not the best, it is just as valid opinion as yours. He's the best because of the way he play's, the fluency and speed of his playing and how he uses his ear's not notes written on paper to play. Gilmour playing is amazing to but that's not why Pink Floyd Is my favorite live band their my favorite not just cause of Gilmour but because of all 4 of the Floyds working together to Create that sound i love.

He was in bands before Pink Floyd(such as Jokers Wild), and he was in Pink Floyd from '68 to -i think- '95 when PULSE came out. And yet, he's still making solo albums! He's old as a motherfucker but he's still rockin' out! There's no doubt that David Gilmour is the greatest guitarist AND vocalist who ever lived. Am i right?!

One of the only artists alive who makes love to his instrument instead of fighting it. If he's as soulful and boundless in person as he is through his music, I can only imagine what a journey knowing him must be. I'm sitting here half conscious as I type because his voice and playing style are like lullabies to me. He's the only artist I listen to where I can sit down to listen to a couple songs and wake up hours later from beautiful dreams inspired by his music.

@Katie4384 Gilmour is an appreciated guitarist, but his voice is severely underrated. Listening to his voice now is as soothing as it ever was, his vocal parts are so polar to Roger's in the Floyd days that it's unbelievable that Water's ever sang anything. He can throw out rockin bellows a la Young Lust, sing an inhumanly soothing tone a la Comfortably Numb, or do a little of both a la Time. He is an amazing voice, writer, and definitely my favorite guitarist of all time.

Yes definitely main creative force behind the lyrics, themes and concepts, however Nick Mason created and recorded the majority of the sound effects for all Floyd albums, including the wall on which he didn't play all the drums. Never seen any evidence that Waters ever played the keyboard except the EMS synth on "on the run". Gilmour has also claimed he played all the hard bass parts in the studio recordings

@PUNKWALIA I thought Nick Griffiths did most of the sound effects on The Wall. Waters did play some synthesizer here and there but Gilmour is obviously a more technically gifted singer and musician, and did sometimes play bass on the albums. I tend to think of Waters as more a songwriter and composer than a musician. Waters created the structures, brought in the concepts and theatrical ideas, and wrote or co-wrote the songs, while Gilmour and Wright created the musical 'sound' of Pink Floyd.

I personally adore GIlmour's emotional and very melodic style of playing more than any other, but also appreciate other of those who are told to be among the greatest - Hendrix, Beck etc etc. the battles like Gilmour vs. Hendrix, Vai vs. Malmsteen are pointless. you can't compare different styles of playing the guitar. it is all a matter of taste.
