  • i enjoyed this vid

  • good work here

  • me:hay sis stand in front of this merror

    sis: ok

    me:hehehehe

    sis:what was that

    me:oh nothin

  • you know you can get really bad sunburn from these :P

  • I dedicate my weekends to burning wooden sticks, and until now I had to make do with plain old boring matches. This large mirror is just what I need to reinvigorate my favorite pastime..

    Where do I sign up?

  • at second 59 theres a face in the mirror coming from the clouds

  • set something in the junk yard on fire like a car... ya! like 50 mirrors

  • i bought one of these from this company a 13 inch model. yup it'll burn sticks. now should i hook it to my hydro generator or a flat piece of stainless for a heater element to cook my steaks on? i have 3000 8"round mirrors and some are going on a 60"sattelite dish then i'll do some cooking

  • o-0 nice!!

  • I can imagine some random guy walking in front of it asking you what your doing....

  • i want one! BBq anyone?

  • Man, think of all the ants you could fry! (Just kidding).

  • i like green technology. but everytime i hear they talk about saving CO2 i roll my eyes

  • Ive been told that granite melts at about 1250f...Ive also heard theories that some of the large stones in say Teotihuacan were carved using mirrors like this. Opinion?

  • lol after watching that stick...I got a bit nervous every time he passed his hand in front of it.

  • my ide from 20 years :)

  • Can i burn people with it? :)

  • this is boring.... GO ON STAND INFRONT OF IT!

  • you should set up 50 of them shining off eachother so you have 8.8817842 × 10*184* times the power of sunlight, and aim it at the sun and see what happens.

  • Put a small solar cell infront of the parabolic mirror, see how close to the focal point You can get the solar cell to the focal point before it fails.

You could use one of those small $5.00, monocrystaline solar cells from radio shack, they do about 250 ma. at about 4.8V in normal sun light, if You do then please make a video for Us. Thanks.

  • I liked the way you found out the focal point!

  • Dang! Where do i get one of those

  • A MULTI-PARABOLA DISH COULD CREATE THE PARABOLIC DISH MULTIPLIER THAT WOULD ACTUALLY BE TOO DANGEROUS TO STAND IN FRONT OF Like the Frisnelle lens only in circular pieces at varying daimeters.. Focused mirror rings inside more focused mirror rings. The bigger, the hotter and the more rings, the hotter, faster..

  • i wanna tan with that

  • i have matches...

  • Good video I just wish the states would switch to Metric already.

  • @DAIGORO14 what part of the kings system are you having trouble with.

  • Comment removed

  • Lol, it would be so funny if his hand set on fire while doing this.

  • How do use this mirror for something producive or is it just for felony arson use?

  • @Binxalot

you wouldn´t be asking this if you were a photographer or filmmaker ;)

  • At the very end of the video... 4:18

Is that an image of the sun we are seeing?

Or is it just imperfections in the mirror?

  • The welder's glasses are EXTREMELY necessary! I made the stupid mistake of trying to toast a bit of white bread using a massive fresnel lens and was looking at the bread trying to establish if it was toasting or not. After about 30 seconds it did finally brown up but when I looked away my vision was massively impacted! There was a central patch that where everything I looked at was brownish tinged. It was freaky! Fortunately my vision returned to normal a few minutes later but it was scary! -S

  • Archimedes used to burn ships with this technology a almost 3000 years ago, where is the innovation about it;

  • im going to make my front door out of these to keep solicitors away.

  • Im going to make my front door out of these to keep out solicitors.

  • how do you find the optimum focal point with one of these?

  • @nswered my own question....

focal point = the radius squared divided by the Depth of the dish x 4

  • i see the face of guy right at 4:23, or is it that i'm becoming crazy?

  • i used to have one of this. I tried using my hand to make fire insted of wood. That was a bit stupid , but, never mind.

i sit all day here writing comments on greenpowerscience with ONE HAND ONLY!! isn't that So Freakin' Awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • great power:D how does it cost?

  • german: sowas in klein wär doch mal ne tolle idee. so das es in jede hosentasche passt ;D

  • Kinda scares me that you're making hand gestures in front of the area of the mirror that was easily able to burn that stick several times, especially with no protection.

  • Nice one ! But however wouldn´t it melt the pipe down??? for it ´s about 900°c.

  • Does it burn you?

  • I was thinking right, parabolic mirrors are somewhat expensive right? Because of their weird shape. What if you make your own mirror? Like the thing you need is just a parabolic glass silvernitrate and some other chemicals to make a silver mirror with high reflection. Or do you think this is as expensive?

  • hello, which is the maximum temperature that can reach?

  • 1700f

  • @GREENPOWERSCIENCE i wonder if you could fire clay pots with that thing? of course the challenge would be to get it to heat the pot evenly.

  • burning a damn stick proves it but do you need to prove the math and how it suppose to work, burning a stick is not enough information.

  • How can I turn it into a weapon to harass my neighbour ?

  • if you had one more which is much smaller you could make death ray device, but using only one, your best option is to throw at him.

  • Soundwaves at a frequency they cant hear but will make them feel like vomiting?

  • could this be used for a telescope? im trying to build a massive mirror without paying massive prices. is there a way to make mirrors with different focal lengths?

  • @sl9guitar

    Cheap mirrors make cheap images.

  • Magnify.....

  • If you want to make one with a better surface, use silver mirror mylar, house it on a an airtight box with a open hold down ring and draw a slight vaccum on it to vary the focal length. I was doing it with a piece of 1/4 inch tubing from the back with one end in my mouth and starting 2 x 4's on fire from 20 feet away! about 24" or 30"

at 50' it was bright but obviously not as hot

  • Are you saying the Mylar is being contorted via Vacume, and thereby changing the focal Point? Or Are You saying a clear covering with a gap between the surface of the dish?

I have seen how powerful they can be, The way I have looked at it is that a filter between the sun could control the output heat. I have seen how water vapor can change the focal point.

    Interesting thought. Thank you!

  • A vaccum behind the stretched mylar

    controls the focal length

  • I thought he would have done more than burn sticks............

  • would make a kick ass snow disk too

  • lol

  • why couldnt you heat your house and water with it,

  • you can,you point it at your water heater and walla scalding hotness.I cook food, like marshmellows and such. You point the parabolical lens at your torso and it keeps u nice and toasty

  • crap and dangerous. too flexible

  • Why does he keep burning sticks?

  • Ever tried and put your hand in front of that?

  • If you were to put something besides wood out there when the light focuses that burns, would that burn too? I've noticed that this video lasts four minutes and forty-eight seconds.

  • i would point that at ppls eyes

  • It has a focal length of about 30 inches.

  • can you please give tips on what type of material to use for reflective film. where can I buy it?....

  • Check out website greenpowerscience we have a link right in the center top page.

  • I'm selling a user's guidebook "How To Deactivate The Caps Lock Key". Pretty sure you're interested.

  • would it boost in solar powerd stuff? if so that b cool 2 have near by that golf cart

  • now put your hand..

  • where can i get a useless dish parabolic for free? to build this concentrator, and the reflecting surface can be of paper for gifts? because there are some layer for gifts that are totally reflecting

  • because it have got big surface area so that the big proportion of the light are reflected and form a focal point?

  • a group up way to burn ants faster >=]

  • How much for one of those

  • In 1980 I saw a mirror just like this one and I accidently passed my hand through the focal point....and.....BOY...I never saw my hand move so quick, before or since!!!

I had a "picture" of the Sun burned on to my hand. OUCH!!!!

  • whoops, I meant at 0:55 (not near end of video).

  • Cool, but you said something about double the heat at the end.

Doesn't the lense redirect the sunlight into a spot so how can you use the parabola mirror behind it? please explain, as I have problem picturing this!

  • I dare you to put your hand at the Fl hehe . Is that first surface coated acrylic ? looks pretty clean

  • i want one but expensive

  • 95% of the worlds population hears:

"It boils 12 ounces of water in a minute."

95% of the worlds population thinks:

"Hmmmm that must be USA - and FLUID ounces - and it's 29.57 milliliters to an ounce - that's close enough to about 30 milliliters, which is almost 340 milliliters."

95% of the worlds population assumes:

Most Americans are backward and stupid.

Why they don't even LIST the equivalent measurement - the we the 95% of the rest of the worlds population actually use.

  • So is this what you do with your measly existence? Make videos and post comments about the US? Is that all you have going for yourself? Pity. If anyone wants to see backward and stupid, check out "callmeshane303" gay videos. From what it appears in your video, it looks like you are living in your parents basement and weigh about 300 pounds...I mean 120 kilograms. You are an embarrassment to Australia.

  • It's OK they keep me in a cage in the basement, but sometimes they let me out.

Oh I gotta go paint poo pictures on the walls - of me talking with Jesus in the temple with the angels.

  • Well Shane. Which is the most powerful nation?

  • Hmm in a nation addicted to food, sex, drugs, gossip, with a media filled with idiots, and they are the worlds worst polluters, and their corporations create enough poisons, germs and nukes to kill the global population 10X over, The US foreign debt is astronomical, ummm the health care system is up shit creek, the last president was a drug fucked idiot, the corporations are filled with thieves, the CIA is the worlds biggest drug runners,

I don't know - how about you tell me?

  • I was born in the USA and Shane is pretty much right.....especially when we had Bush, BY FAR THE WORSE PRESIDENT EVER, and his Evil, Greedy Cronies sure gave the USA a very bad name throughout the world. We are the most hated people and nation on Earth.

  • Obviously Shane, we over estimate your ability to use a calculator. In future hopefully all Americans will take your limitations into account when posting information that might require mental effort on your part. I might alternately mention the 95% that use metrics do the same to the US so I really don't see the problem since we simply do the math instead of bitch about it.

  • Could they be mounted around your property for security?

  • Mythbusters tried such and couldn't set alight enemy ships, so not really. You could set nearby wood on fire though.

  • Come on guys :) Who are those mythbusters? What they prove that is the uniqe and only truth? :) Great guys but even if they failed that experiment that doesen't means to me that it's impossible. (I saw that sereies)

  • kwc org /mythbusters/2006/01/episode_46_archimedes_death_ra.html

It would be hot at the focal point, but the target would have to stay there until it absorbs enough energy to combust. Flaming arrows are much easier and less weather dependent.

  • We have done the deathray test and will have a video soon. Mythbusters missed one easy step. We can burn stuff at 30M with 5 regular .7M x .7M mirrors almost instantly.

  • great! waiting for the vid!

  • sweet .. i should get a huge mirror so i dont have to resort to tradition stick burning methods ...

  • To make continuous use of a parabolic reflector to, say heat water or generate steam... do you need really critical sun tracking? That would make this a daunting more task. It burns sticks good, though!

  • awesome!

cant we boil water to start a turbine?

    go on

  • 25 kW Sterling dishes:) watch?v=OTQ4cFn5sXs

  • callmeshane303 u are such an arrogant prick. I just wanted you to know this and I will not be responding to your arrogant rants. I already know what you are going to say so whateve you say just know I already know what you are going to say. Every single comment you have made have been arrogant which puts other people down. Good job at life.

  • Yeah good one retarded american.....

So tell me, does arrogance come in gills, hogs heads, cubits or leagues?

  • callmeshane, is a unit conversion really so hard to do?

  • That Ass Hopper, could be a very Zen Question. If only.

  • I do not understand what you are trying to convey.

  • I didn't - but you did. Therefor.

  • Is a unit conversion really so hard to do?

  • lol... i don't agree but you brounght it with style. therefore you have my respect :D

  • Hey Shane, use the calculator in google dumbass instead of complaining because the US uses a different system.

  • Oh exporter of shit..

It's so nice to see you have a firm grasp on navigating the vacuum of space between your big ears....

Not much good on exporting technology globally......

Smart Arse Comment? = Epic Fail.

  • Shane, you're an idiot. There is precious little that will change the fact that you are a waste of perfectly good carbon that would be of more use if it were charcoal. As for exporting technology globally, I am not very partial to a great many of the places it might go... so I really don't care if you can't grasp anything troll.

  • .

    Hmmmm LOL

You could write an epic one line novel....

"Hey look at me Dude - I'm a loser"...

    LOL

  • IDEA:

Sell these things in home depot. that way campers dont have to waste time making a fire in the forest to roast marshmallow (and ...less forest fires perhaps, of course, See, thinking green =B )

  • May i ask a question? At the end where you reflect the light onto the building, we see dark blotches as the mirror is moved around. what are they? are they patches of the clouds above projected? trees obstructing the light? or perhaps the lens imperfections? peace:P

  • i just use matches,, they are like 15 cents

  • lol rogelio67 , like to see your matches or other materials used ; boil a gallon of water and create no pollution in the proccess :) i know your only kiddin. peace :P

  • I read back several pages and didn't come across my question. Something that you state in the vid that simply makes no sense.

You say you can use a Fresnel AND your parabolic AT THE SAME TIME. (I assume you mean on the same focal point.)

How? since you have to be 'downstream' of the light that the Fresnel has already re-directed the light and is no longer parallel for the parabolic to focus.

    EXPLAIN...

  • i use also on a cristal ball efected also

  • Amazing things are being done with these. I understand there are companies heating water in boilers large scale in sunny areas.

  • Nice mirror! Who needs a laser when you have one of these!

  • Would a colored plexiglass mirror be ok? I'm bidding on a purple tinged plexiglass mirror for pretty cheap.

  • Yes The power will depend on the darkness of the color but it should work. Are you molding it or is it already curved.

  • I was going to "slow cook it" inside a large 48" parabolic (heres where your going to laugh) sled saucer(the smooth steel ones they sell)BTW do I have to drill a hole in the center so it doesnt bow funny?

  • I meant 28"

  • Keep the videos coming.!

  • Fun - but my mirror is six feet in diameter and -kapow! yeah, wood burns.

I used an old yard style sat dish, cut mirrors in one inch square tiles and tiled interior with silicone adhesive sealant for adhesive.

silicone is waterproof, frost proof and heat proof as well as commonly available.

PAINT BACK SIDE OF MIRROR WITH EPOXY PAINT AND LOSS OF COATING WILL BE PREVENTED. Prior to gluing the tiles down, natch.

Had one that was 11 feet diameter. Flash cooked a frozen hotdog in fifteen seconds.

  • ok, now we need a vid on solar powered cold fusion lol

  • Radio shack used to sell small versions of these as cigarrette lighters. I wanted a refund, cuz the fine print didnt say it wouldnt light on a cloudy day lol.

  • is there a video of it w/ the fresnel lens?

  • Can some one please tell me what the reflective material that is used to line the dish? i would love to know..........let me know

  • Silver is the most reflective, but expensive.

The next best material is aluminum.

  • Whats his carbon footprint, the evil bastard!!!

  • LOL!

  • It's a nuclear powered stick burner.

  • Ah, nothing screams eco-friendly like burning sticks

  • They have these in a testing facility in Arizona. They are directed at ceramic pipes filled with water which is heated by these mirrors (or one like it). The steam produced in the pipes is then used to turn a turbine making electricity. Not sure of the power produced (Think its enough to power a small building) Not sure what they do when it gets dark though...

  • wow.

  • Because his arm in not at the focal point where the stick is; his arm is off top the side of the focal point. It's a parabolic dis not a parabolic trough.

  • music is from moller flying car hahah

  • OK OK OK.......show us what can be done with the mirror to create energy! I watched a five minute video of you burning sticks. You showed us every angle of that stick being toasted. Your like a kid with matches here. I got the point after the first burn.

  • having you point out how to see the focusing point with the smoke is awsome. watched all your vids. great work, cause, and edit. personality goes perfectly green. 5*'s

  • welcome back steam power (without coal)

  • I watched a program on PBS where they used a hundred parabolic mirrors all focusing on one area, it generated over six thousand degrees and they demonstrated it by cutting a large "I" beam like it was butter.

  • can it bURn My CigArEttE?!!!!!

  • How many forests do we need to grow to keep Dan in sticks?

  • :-)

  • WHAT WAS THE POINT DAN?

  • Did you mean frensel lenses? If not, that would be some crazy heat. Also, where can I get one of these and how much does it cost? I want to get one so I can shine it at cars on the freeway. Or test the frensel combo to super heat oil to in turn boil water for steam generators.

  • I dont know man, but these people always keep burning sticks in their videos. I like energy alternatives as well but it would be more helpful if these mirrors or wind or solar panels are more practical to our everyday life.

  • Where there is fire there is energy. The stick burning demonstrates the basics and you can use some creativity from there. If you heat food, there is one aspect. Check out our other videos, there are a lot of practical applications.

    Thank for the comment.

  • yes but you can show what you can do with it? I mean the show is called green science and all you show here is how to use sun to burn down forests. use the heat for something !

  • I'll second you on that! Even before I saw your comment I was thinking...greenpowerscience...and then all he's doing in this video is burning wood and producing unnecessary CO2...

  • Go to my channel, you will see Stirling engines, Steam engines, was of bumping up pv, solar cooking videos. This video is an introductory process to an item that was only available to people spending thousands of dollars.

Focus on this, where there is concentrated heat from the sun, there is renewable energy.

  • Very interesting this experiment. What sort of air temperature was it at the time?, with 2-3 of these attached to a 'tracking' frame could really produce some useful energy i would think!.

  • Hi,

It was about 85F out. The outside temperature is not a factor to ignition. It only matters with build temperatures due to heat leaching.

  • So, one could boil water at that point that would travel into pipes networked under the floor of ones house. It may not work on cloudy days, but at least you wouldn't need gas/electric heat during sunny days, which, if everyone did it, would add up to a lot of savings. Yes?

  • Indeed, I think.

  • nice mirror, can you make them that shiny at home?

what did they make it from?

  • Hot stuff now that is Cool! Can you give the place you got it from or can you show how to make one of that size or bigger

  • i watch allot of your vids. i also have used wood for heat for 2+ years. please take a piece of non charred wood and show how long it takes to catch fire. i ask this for two reasons. 1. something that was on fire will catch much faster the second time. 2. just re-lighting a piece of charred pine does not seem like an accurate depiction of the power of the lens you describe. thanks!

  • Watch 3:15 - 3:30 the beam is moved across non-exposed pine. The section that is ignited is new.

  • i have watched your vids. Please show how long it takes to ignite a piece of wood that has not previously been on fire. moving from one area on a stick to another area is not the same as creating the initial combustion. i am sorry but it takes away from the demonstration. Thank you with most respect. corey

  • Wow cool mirror.

    How much did it cost?

  • 5 stars dan! keep it up. Hay use that new dish to try the exp again with the moon light and see if you are able to concentrate any more moon light with this dish then the other one you used. larry

  • isso ai eu faço com meu oculos

  • ..Lol...

  • could be dangerous in the wrong hands

  • um mister rojas, could you please show us how to make or obtain a good functional parabolic mirror or a fresnel lense? it just seems that your videos are mostly for demonstration.

  • He has them on ebay.

  • Hi,

Go to my website, I have several good links there:-)

    Thankyou for the comment.

  • if you have a hole in the bottom you can extend an instruments thru the hole out to focal point... the hole has hardly any effect on power...

  • that is a project..i agree

  • Nice video, I hope to see you using this to power a stirling engine like your video I think that had a fresnel lens heating a metal pipe. Then the pipe was attached to a stirling. On that note, I just recently bought a sterling engine kit that supposedly runs on the heat of your hand. I'll try and record myself building it and post some videos when I'm done. Keep the videos coming.

  • Oh the beauty of the equation (1/p)+(1/q)=(1/f)

(I'm sort of a physics junkie)
