  • How did you get the cab ride. Do you work for them or did you just ask the driver for a cab ride to Euston.

  • I think I'd be a good train driver-and this video makes it sound much more awesome :D

  • Love the pendelino. It's justbthe best way to get from Carlisle to London

  • I DRIVED THIS TRAIN IN THIS ROUTE IN RAILWORKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Sweeeeeeeet

  • Wow! You really do get a good sense of speed on this video! Thanks for uploading.

  • Nice video! We have lots of Pendolino trains here in Finland too.

  • that windscreen wiper is getting on my nerves. is that its resting position? argh!

  • virgin is the only train company in the uk going in the right direction. National express on the other hand are cunts and i am on the edge of going to norwich to punch the fuckers who run it in the head.

  • @jimmyass hahahaha, they are cunts

  • @jimmyass Er, no they aren't. Branson is a twat, he put Wrexham and Shropshire out of business by using his no competition clause in his franchise agreement. It would seem that Sticky Dicky Branson loves a free market and competition as long as nobody competes with him or cuts in on his market. He covets the East coast franchise so god help Grand Central and Hull Trains if he gets that. Branson is as bad as those fuckers in Norwich. They're only in it for what they can get out of it.

  • @railman01 You really have no idea what you are talking about. The people who (regrettably) put WSMR out of business were WSMR themselves as it was a very expensive operation and the business plan never realised the volume of people. Also the moderation of competition you refer to was a DfT driven issue to ensure that the government got their maximum financial return of the investment in West Coast Route Mod.

  • @simonpilk Virgin didn't help by not allowing WSMR to stop at Wolverhampton and setting up their own Wrexham Euston service. Oh and Branson was quick to use the clause when Midland Mainline were running a service from Manchester to London. He was happy to let them take the brunt of passenger movements to London but as soon as the upgrade between the two cities was finished he wanted Midland Mainline out of the picture using his little clause

  • @railman01 Moderation of competition is nothing to do with Virgin as I have said in my previous comment, it was brought in by DfT to protect their investment in West Coast Route Mod. DfT were equally in favour of the Manchester - London MML service because it assisted the DfT upgrade. Its not a Virgin issue.

  • @simonpilk So what !! What about VT refusing WSMR a full station access agreement at Wolverhampton ? And Grand Central with their plans for a Bradford, Halifax, Huddersfield to London service via Stockport, Branson objected to that not the Dft. Even when First group ran a Rochdale-London service it called at Man Vic, Newton LW and Tamworth, mmm, no Warrington or Crewe or Stafford and all because VT wouldn't give them access agreements to stop at these locations. That's competing for you VT style

  • @railman01 Sorry pal, you have not understood anything of the reality. I worked massively on WCML and am a bit closer to the issues. You carry on and get something out of bashing Mr B, but you are so wrong in what you say. Its not Virgin but DfT rules which will only be relaxed for moderation of competition when the new WCML franchise is let.

  • @simonpilk You have missed my point completely, i've gone past the Dft, sod them, Virgin refused the access agreements. Anyway bollocks to all that. What's your opinion of Roy McNuttys recent report ?

  • @railman01 I havent missed the point at all. I think its maybe you who is not aware of the full facts and all the politics that surround them and what companies are 'minded' to do as the DfT strongly hints that they do.

  • @simonpilk The DfT, politicians, typical. They want to control the running of the railways but when it all goes tits up, they lie and spin their way out of it. Anyway what about McNulty's report ?

  • @railman01 many interesting bits but does not go far enough

  • @simonpilk The government should be completely in or get out of the railways altogether, the number of TOCs needs reducing so we have more integration and more of a plan to take the railways forward. Either way i am wary of it as i work in a busy ticket office and we are one of the main targets, but i am constantly told by passengers that they prefer a person rather than a TVM to sort out the right ticket for their journey.

  • @railman01 The government will always be involved in the railways and were when BR was in existence. I agree that a person in a ticket office is often a better option. I use ticket machines or websites as I have a better understanding than Joe Public luckily. Anyway, thats my last comment as I dont think for a moment a lengthy debate was wanted on youtube to a video about a cabride on a pendelino. Cheers

  • my step dad drives for virgin

  • These trains are great. On my last trip to the UK I made a beeline for them every time I was travelling. Has a railpass - first class ($200 more for 20 days). Was well worth it. Knee room and hot food with alcohol. Better than cramped seats and chips. Fantastic service. The only time I didnt like it was when the tilt had something wrong on it on the way to Birmingham and every second bend WHAM the trail would flop over. Was sick by the time I had travelled from London.

  • @Realfoxhawk They are the crappest trains ever to disgrace the West Coast main line. Cheapo nasty things. Typical choice of Government bean counters.

  • @railman01 What's wrong with them? I've travelled on them plenty of times and don't have a problem with them!

  • @Inkyminkyzizwoz Good for you, you're easily pleased. But when people are paying £279 for an open return from Manchester to London it could be a tad better, don't you think ? And fares are set for even greater rises. Our elected "honourable" members of parliament voted (in 2006) for an eighty percent fare rise between 2007 and 2014. Yeah, It could be just ever so slightly better.

  • @railman01 If you book online using thetrainline you can do it for just £46.20 with a Railcard! (2x Online Only Off-Peak Singles at £23.10 each.)

  • @Inkyminkyzizwoz Er, yeah, i know, i work in a ticket office and railcards a restricted to 16-25 year olds, over 60s, the disabled, armed forces, families (and friends) and those living in the South East (Network Railcard). So smart arse if your'e 27, able bodied, live in the North, not in the armed forces and travelling without kids and you want to arrive in London before 11 am on a weekday you and your'e bank account are fucked.

  • @railman01 People don't have to be related to be on a friends and family Railcard!

  • @Inkyminkyzizwoz Who said anything about being related ? I said travelling with kids. Oh and you'll see that i put " and friends " in brackets.

  • @railman01 What I was getting at is that anyone can get a Friends and Family Railcard!

  • @Inkyminkyzizwoz True, but if you are travelling without a child what then? Knackered, basically.

  • @railman01 They don't have to be children - ANYONE can go on a Friends and Family Railcard! Like I said, they don't have to be related!

  • @Inkyminkyzizwoz Yes, ANYONE, can travel on a family and friends railcard and yes i know they don't have to be related. But answer me this, what is the minimum group size when travelling on a family and friends railcard ? And, no, THEY DON'T HAVE TO BE RELATED.

  • @railman01 Anyway, I don't see how high fares make the trains themselves 'cheapo nasty things'!

  • the last beep, is that the Red/ Amber warning sound? sorry i just wanted to know as i have never heard it before, and there is another one. or is it the vigilance ? (along the lines) sound which the driver does need to respond to otherwise the brakes come on? thanks for your help, very nice video. I want to be train driver when i am old enoguh :D

  • @FGW1234 The last beep is a warning of a temporary speed restriction, but is the same warning given for a red/amber signal, the driver has to push a button within a certain time or the brakes are applied. The other "bing" sound means clear signal and the driver does not have to respond to it.

  • @v390 thanks :D

  • nice view!!!

  • Jeez the incessant noise alerts would drive me CRAZY. How do you do it?

  • i love this video 5*

  • These trains suck,HSTs rule.

  • @iloveamericans1 do grow up

  • @iloveamericans1 Sensibility rules !!!!!!

  • I bet you can really feel the tilt when in the cab?

  • is it normal you can't see FUCK ALL through that tiny window?

  • @SingHouse wtf, how is that window "tiny"

  • how did you manage to get a cab ride in a virgin pendolino 390

  • Train!

  • hi, the beeping sound is found in all trains including scotrail. the scotrail 156 class is still in operation.

  • Great video mate :)

  • Im not saying I dont like these trains

But what in hell made Virgin pick Alstom

  • the reason 140mph is not used is solely the lack of in cab signalling. the track is designed for high speed running apart from a couple of curves

  • Im going on one of those in a month :D london here i come.

  • love the tilt

  • Doese the West Coast Line go anywhere near the west coast?

  • Yes

  • hehe

  • @darkarts59

According to Google Earth and my TRACK atlas, between Lancaster and Carforth the West Coast Line gets to within maybe 500 to 1,000 feet from Morecambe Bay, or at least the mud flats of Morcambe Bay (Maybe it was low tide.) Morcambe Bay is part of the Irish Sea.

South of Gretna the WCML gets to within, I would estimate, 2,500 feet from Solway Firth (or its mud flats), also part of the Irish Sea.

  • Great choice of location for the clip. Weedon curves show the tilt off to its best - passengers on one side of the train get a window-full of sky, whilst those across the aisle can only see the ground!

  • I take it the driver likes his flapjacks

  • Pendolino 390s aren't brand new, they were built in 2001 to 2004.

  • how is it messing around, and they are not always late

  • They do break down though - 390013 today: door failure at Rugby

  • @WrongRoadRailways All machines break down at some point!

  • The driver sits on the left of the cab, where as this video was taken from the right hand side where you don't drive from.

  • @Gauge1channel your lack writing skills explain your comment.

  • How much do you or any other virgin trains driver get paid for this? And what qualifications and things do you have to go through to become one?

  • i work for national express east coast and i get 36,450 a year,

so i suspect virgin drivers get the same sort of amount because we do the same sort of work.

All you need really is a good solid C in your subjects, and apply for VT training and i'm sure thats how you could get a job.

  • you dont any more mate

  • Undortunately not,

Grand Central are offering temporary work until the east coast franchise is filled though.

  • well good luck i hope you keep your job

  • thanks mate

  • Virgin are on £44,900 or there abouts. I only know this as I've just landed a job with them. No more rural routes for me..:-(

  • Very beautiful mate! :-) 5 stars!

  • Much less than 200 years!

  • I meant the route, embankments, tunnels etc. Not the actual track.

  • Still much less than 200, more like 150

  • thats fantastic not very often u see a cab view from a train, this train looks great how is it operated? is it complicated or easy?

  • Isn't it abit caustrophobic in that cab? there is little light in there and the window is stupidly positioned!!!

  • Know this route like the back of my hand.... its my baby so to speak haha....

  • thank you

  • That beeping would do my nut in.

  • Beeping is the AWS, If it beeps it means that the next signal is green (Therefore the driver isnt needed to cancel the aural warning) However if the beep is continuous the driver will have to respond and cancel the aural alarm thus meaning the next signal is showing a caution or redlight (Stop).

  • As well as an indication of a green aspect ahead, It's to keep the driver alert!

  • Looks like that was going through the Weedon area through the S bend?

  • Thats right, on the the up fast through weedon on the approach to Stowe Hill tunnel.

You must travel this route ALOT!

  • Coool man! :)

  • The British national speed limits on motorways/railways are terrible, due to inferior technology compared in Britain. Maglev train does 280MPH and is more safer, and more economical than the Virgin Pendolino. 70MPH is max in england, no speed limit on AutoBahn bigger road though and more population travel. less accidents than on the M1

  • 70mph is max on UK motorways... however, the max speed on this railway line is 125mph. The Pendolino in this video is travelling at about 125mph.

  • I think you'll find that Britain invented the technology!

And there are more road accidents in the UK because there are more people and cars - not due to the 70 mph limit.

  • @wdielwlairajmd and most people cannot drive properly or safley

  • And don't forget that the track in this video was built about 200 years ago. So 125 mph is not bad!

  • I'm sure the track would have been relayed by then ;) Notice how there used to be wooden sleepers, now most of them are concrete.

  • True, but I am talking about the general infrastructure. (i.e. the winding route, bridges, tunnels, cuttings, embankments etc.)

  • Actually the new ice train is bringing the speed limit up in speed trains. Who said trains were only allowed to go 70 mph. It's 125 atm

  • there is a very long distance from the driver to the window

  • how does the driver know how far away he his from his next station he is suppose to stop at?

  • Route knowlage - they have to know the whole route. Nice video.

  • those trains are rally cool. Thanks for putting this vidieo on youtube

  • i would love to drive a pendelino, so sexy lol. Great vid, ATW signals bit loud ain't they, still good

  • its actually quite quiet i thought it would be loud lol

    great video.

  • it is when u do the horn the interior vibrates

  • great video m8,

    what do the beeps mean?

    thanks

  • An automatic warning system (AWS), which tells the us the next signal is green, it makes a warning sound if its amber or red.

  • If you were given in-cab signalling, could the Pendolino do more than 125mph, like the Class 91s can technically do 140mph?

  • yeah they can , its just the uk's shitty lines.

  • @Thewhiterose Just so you know, in railway terminology the colour of the Caution indication is referred to as yellow, not amber.

  • Excellent!! I love these driver cab views. Thanks for showing us this video.

  • i'll probably drive some of them if i get a job at virgin trains at 18 or 21

  • 1 lucky guy

  • i wouldn't feel comfortable driving these as the driver is quite far back from the windscreen

  • No there not, they are quite close acctually if your sitting in the drivers chair.

  • i did, during the York Railfest in 2004, but then again, i woundt mind feeling what its like in the cab while its running

  • Makes me want to be a train driver!

Thats actually quite a nice looking interior too, especially for a train lol!

    Excellent vid.

  • Shows the tilt working to good effect!
