That is what Digg shouts are for. Shout only if you have something special and ask rarely.

That way people only get it when they go to Digg and are more likely interested in it(unless you enabled email notification). It's less intrusive.

Regarding the reason for the digging.. you don't do it for the digg traffic spike. Subject for a different marketing channel.
