  • Matthew's is the polar opposite of Buckley

  • too bad if buckley had lived he would have vomited over matthew's left wing politcal warpness

  • This video does show many things: Matthews making a superb eulogy of a conservative figure (too rare not to mention it), seeing a figure which united most people, and especially remembering the witty one liners he made. A trait most Republicans lack. In fact, I can bet the first intellectual the current Republicans would pick a fight with would be Buckley, even before Chomsky. He'd not survive the current political climate, and he would even weep...

  • Sorry to say this but I always find Buckley arrogant in his appearances, even though I may agree with him intellectually.

  • It's hard to fill W F Buckley's shoes at the National Review. But Jonah Goldberg can't even fill his spit cup.

  • Interesting the so-called leftist commie pinko Liberal biased Chris Matthews(at least thats what the morons say who believe in the so-called Reed Irvine based theory of Liberal bias) would actually praise Buckley. Wow, may'be MSNBC and other news corporations are not biased in any way shape or form, well with the exception of their unwavering support of corporate America and Neo-Liberal policies!!!!!!

  • I want to send my fairwell to this great man, hither to hither to. bouer bauer baxter bauer hippy tippy tappy too. Rock bye billy bob Thornton is new, I cannot fathom this loss with which my mind hath grasp. Rock a bye baby in the tree tops. Bye Billy F Buckley, we miss you.

  • Bill Buckley would be ashamed of Matthews. I am ashamed of him. I was fan of Matthews, not so long ago. How sad that he has devolved into an unreasoning man, so filled with hate he cannot remove himself from the moment, and simply laugh at it, as he used to do.

  • buckley used to pop ritalin like a madman during his last days. his son would have to fool him, shout at him to keep him away... he was a pretty shit case in his decline

  • this is a nice tribute :D

  • Small world. I currently live off of Moody Street. Originally from Taunton though.

Scott Brown certainly isn't a Liberal. Martha Coakley probably is, but since she didn't take a position on anything its hard to say. Where most men and women of the left saw a divide between themselves and Brown, they didn't feel much would be done about it. Abortion, Marriage Equality, Water boarding.

Torture isn't a left right issue.

  • Well since I voted for him, it doesn't. Scott Brown is as hard right as Specter. He ran against an absentee candidate and won based on Taxes. MA has some of the most severe taxes going.

What MA didn't vote for was Waterboarding. But like most republcians, tell yourself whatever historical narritive helps you sleep at night.

  • spoken like a true neaderthal

  • I don't like the message, but I can appreciate the humour, kudos

  • And I must appreciate the candour, not a common conservative virtue of late if ever, kudos.

  • The National Review is a fitting tribute to a great man. Chris Matthews is right when he refers to his work is to pray. Godspeed, WFB.

  • Allow me to also state that Ronald Reagan is the neocons new poster boy, but Reagan was a total hypocrite. Why do people even consider the guy to have been conservative? Some of his rhetoric sounded conservative, but he was a statist. He has massive budget deficits, gave amnesty to illegals, and was a war-mongerer. As bad as Jimmy Carter was, Carter was the BEST president the US had in the entire 1900's period.

  • In addition, I support abolishing the US Postal Service so that the private sector can take this sector over. I would improve ties with Russia, which the current D.C. regime is clearly pestering for no good reason. I don't want an empire "puppet" country like Georgia to drag us into problems with a country that should be our ally. I am strongly against the US bombing Iran. I was also against the US going into Vietnam and both World Wars. Gulf of Tonkin was a fraud - and FDR agitated Japan first.

  • why does Mr. Matthews, a liberal hack, like Mr. Buckley so much? Because Mr. Buckley was a CIA agent who "cleaned up" the conservative movement back in the day. Mr. Buckley, neocon scum, tried to destroy the "Old Right" in the vein of Robert Taft...Mr. Buckley wrote a nasty mean-spirited "obituary" for Murray Rothbard when he died. Mr. Buckley you were a scumbag. The Old Right is going to return and u can't stop it because you are rotting deep in the ground....Ron Paul 2012.

  • Matthews is a Liberal Hack?

    Buckley is Neocon scum?

"666hell" is in your name, you support Ron Paul, and you think the old right, which as Matthews stated was strongly anti-Jewish (and today would likely be anti-everything) is a better option.

Whatever you support, your appealing to only a small number of disenfranchised people at best, and I should think even you could understand that a bitter, hatefilled kook like yourself couldn't get very far with that message.

    Best of Luck.

  • Perhaps I should explain further for clarification. Am I and others like me disenfranchised? You bet. The American people are disenfranchised. Hatefilled kook? Incorrect, unless you mean hatefilled towards America's enemies. I am proposing that the US government returns to serving the American people, not the globalists. I propose abolishing the Federal Reserve, getting rid of the UN and NATO, phase out Medicare and Social Security, abolish the Dprts. of Education, Energy, Transportation, etc...

  • His 1959 book, reprinted a few times, titled "Up From Liberalism" is still an accurate portrayal of liberalism today, some 50 years later. It is worth reading even for Liberals who want to reflect on whether or not their almost religious fanaticism about liberalism is perhaps alluring on its face, but illogica to its core.

Liberals might learn about the damage done by Elanor Roosevelt and her very misguided beliefs about such people as Joseph Stalin (her Uncle Joe), and others she embraced.

  • I'm willing to bet that you know very little about Buckley. I didn't like his feelings on foreign policy, but beyond that he was pretty decent. And SMART.

There is nobody in the media today that can touch his eloquence nor intelligence.

  • Buckley's eloquence and commanding intelligect, juxtaposed with your decidedly puerile mind and sophomoric observation, illustrate perfectly the literary trope of oxymoron.

  • loving? is that title for real...That was not loving

  • Why wasn't it?

  • I'd bring all the American troops home from overseas bases. I would also suspend ALL foreign aid from the government. I would work for the American people. Abolish the income tax, and let people keep their money. I support a non-interventionist foreign policy. I was against the Iraq War. I am for the Second Amendment and abortion is clearly a form of murder. I am a strong critic of the Progressive movement. I consider T. Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Abraham Lincoln, and FDR the worst presidents.

  • Abraham Lincoln is one of the worst presidents....there wouldn't be an america without the man.

If you're against government intervention that you have to be pro-choice or you're a hypocrite. You can't be a cafeteria conservative and not have people notice.

  • Many of the most devout 50+ liberals today that I speak with in my older brothers generation who grew up listening and watching Buckley, have expressed respect for the man.

That is the biggest thing I get from reading 'National Review'. That it teaches you "how" to think, not "what" to think. My mind feels expanded after reading it, and things make more sense.

Buckley's charm and wit was able to make conservatism appealilng.

  • I'm no conservative, and his views are very logical. 'Ron Paulish' or maybe Ron Paul is "Buckleyish". Either way. True thinker.

  • @NewMexicoSunset National Review is the greatest magazine ever created. It is lasting legacy for Mr. Buckley. I have subscribed for over 20 years and stil look forward to the current issue in the mail. Godspeed, WFB. :)

  • Still one of the 3 great B's of conservatism!

  • Buckley was a wonderful man. He was a devout Catholic, and referred to himself at times as libertarian and republican. he was just conservative. Matthews was a speech writer for Carter, yet years later filled in for Rush Limbaugh. He doesn't have a loyalty he just is for who is popular at the moment.

  • This sort of thought process is why too many people are losing interest in politics. There are centrists in this country who find aspects of both parties appealing.

Not everyone is going to play the "us vs. them" game. Some of us judge policy and ideas on the merit and not the person who suggested them.

  • Again you make no sense. Are you suggesting that murder shouldn't be a crime? Again, I said abortion is murder. Murder is a crime. Us vs them? I have already said that Jimmy Carter was the best president in the entire 1900's. And yes, Lincoln, FDR, Woodrow Wilson, and Teddy Roosevelt were the worst presidents. Lincoln was a criminal thug, and yes I am saying that the south had the right to leave, as I believe any state today does, regardless of what the Federal thugs and lawyers say.

  • I respect WFB because he was man enough to admit that his views on Vietnam were totally wrong. Bravo. Died with a clean conscious.

  • "Renaissance man" lmfao.

  • I stopped watching because of Chris Matthews, WHAT A COCK. seriously... he's the most irritating twat i've ever seen.

  • what a silly comment. thank you

  • George Will*

  • Of course, as a socialist libertarian (not to be confused with official libertarian socialists), I do not agree much with Buckley, but I did wholly agree with him on not wanting to invade Iraq (esp. if the clear-cut proof that there were no wmds got out to the people earlier) and drug legalization. Buckley wasn't afraid to think outside the box as a conservative, and unlike most mainstream conservatives today, he was civil and polite in debate. Few people like buchanan or georgew will, were.

  • Socialist libertarian?

You must be a rather confused fellow, sir.

  • Oh, it's an ideology alright. Check it out on Wikipedia

  • they really go hand in hand... the american political spectrum is a false dichotomy and has almost nothing in common with the rest of the planet & historical politics

  • Well, I hope many of my fellow conservatives have added this to their respective play lists b/c it will mark one of the rare occassions Chris Matthews was nice (or for that matter fair) to a conservative. I felt like taking a polaroid.

  • The antisemitism was just plain dumb. Who gives a shit what religion the people who own media are? That still doesn't make them any less elite or different. It doesn't prove that you can only get ahead if you're Jewish. i mean, the fact is, most major media outlets are based in NYC, which has a large Jewish population!

  • Just got my March copy of NR with a cover-to-cover tribute of WFB. Can't wait to delve deep in to it.

  • It's was a great tribute. Many interesting anecdotes. He was really a superb role model: intellectual yearning, had hobbies, kind to all people, practiced the religion he adhered to.

My only regret is that I wasn't old enough during his formative years.

    Requiescant in Pace, WFB

  • Wow, a pleasant and thoughtful tribute from Chris Matthews. He's regained his humanity in my eyes.

  • Well Matthews gave a nice tribute, and no Chris did not end up where he started, but at least he had the taste to actually do a tribute. Which is a hell of a lot better than most, who did not even give the passing of a man so important to this country the time it deserved. And shame on all who did not!

  • I hear what you say, but this is not really much of a tribute in content or quantity. If these few shallow lines are Buckley's tribute, then they shouldn't bother.

  • Shouldn't bother? What did you want him to do? The rest of MSNBC didn't say anything to my knowledge, and Fox - while doing a tribute program - had none of their personalities say anything because they didn't agree with him.

He was against the Iraq occupation, he was for the legalization of drugs.

This tribute said more about the man than the cause, and thats how the tribute should be done. Bill Buckley was more than Conservatism.

  • Also, you may be surprised by how mis-informed you are. The Republican party is currently moving towards my views. Have you seen the town hall protests on TV? Many of these people want to get rid of Social Security and Medicare. Also, for the first time in recent memory, all but one Republican, neocon Lindsey Graham, voted against racist Sotomayor for Supreme Court. The Republican party is slowly moving in my direction, and will continue to do so. Thousands of people are going to Ron Paul events

  • I am referring to the Senate committee that Graham was on - not the final vote. People are also waking up to the fact that Israel seemed to have some knowledge beforehand that 9-11 was going to occur - and was actively spying on the US according to Fox News. You should see the 4 part report by Carl Cameron in 2001 on the Amdocs company and spies in the US.

  • rooper, comment what you want, and believe what you'd like - but forget the war between guys like me and guys like you - you're out of your mind - the republican party is moving to the hard right, and will be rendered obsolete when it does.

Someone call the Eisenhower republicans to save the brand name.

  • Forget the Eisenhower country club Republicans, Robert Taft was the man for president, not Eisenhower. Robert Taft was the man in 1952 for President.

  • Wait, wait, wait. So Lindsay Graham is a neocon? Please. He's a weak conservative, but he's certainly NOT of the neoconservative persuasion.

  • We live in the time when 8 people comment on a video like this and 1 million on nonsense - you people are my friends today.

  • Yup. a clip like this gets 3000 views, and one where a girl jumps on her bed singing a bad cover to a Led Zep tune gets 2 million hits in a day.

    What a country.

  • if you want to see the funniest thing in the world it is a video of Buckley on Hardball where the brilliant Buckley could not even get a thought from his brain to his mouth without the fast-talking Mathews crowding in with "what do you say, Mr. Buckley" five times. After a while Bill was twitches-only. Hilarious, but a sad commentary on the difference between a time of real people and our present chattering heads.

  • Simply put, it is difficult to emphasize to what extent Chris Mathews is no WFB.

  • Chris Matthews-Another day, another man-crush.

  • Chris Matthews commenting on William F. Buckley?

This is like Paris Hilton discussing Burke.

    Give me a break !!!

  • I bet you are quite well at throwing balls up in the air and catching them with your mouth-

  • That's Rich.

  • Quite.
