Those of you who prefer the Burj are delusional. Can you imagine plonking that ghastly beast in the middle of London? It would look absolutely awful. Even worse than in looks in Dubai. London builds its buildings on practicality and classy appearance.

It may suit the Arab Sheiks to build gaudy buildings just to show off, but that is certainly not the English way, is it?

It's all about context.

The Shard won't be among the world's tallest, but with such a prominent location, and in terms of design quality, it will rank up there with the best of them - Chrysler Building, Bank of China Tower, etc.

I think most people on the SkyscraperCity forums would agree with me (even non-Brits).

@bluvslou Its gonna be the tallest in the European Union. And Britain will also have the second tallest in the European Union (The pinnacle). And as for the Burj Dubai, its just stupid. Its a horrible design and the layout of Dubais buildings are so clumsy and just lacks character. I would rather this building.

how's the pinnacle getting on across the river?

@boltjet135 the core has begun to rise (3 floors) however it is likely progress will be very slow untill full work on the basement completed and additional funding has arrived.

wow can't wait till its done! looks great
