  • I dont have any of x264 stuff in encoder settings. How can I get them there?

  • @EssentalFx That shyt will slow your CPU to a crawl, if your trying to covert a video file....

  • can you use windows movie maker to render

  • i installed huffy and Lagarith. i dont see ither of them in Sony Vegas..

  • @grandslamjmh Did you install them as Administrator? Installing codecs requires that you have Administrator privileges because modifications to the registry and Windows system files are required.

  • @helios2k6 I Fixed my problem.. even after System Restoring 3-4 times. LOL. Plus i had two different Xvid codecs installed that was messing up my rendering.

  • @helios2k6 How do you fix the Direct Show Error "Unable to render the file. you probably don't have the corret filters installed"

I know they are installed. why doesnt it want to work.

  • When he's showing the rendering settings, I can't find the Huffy Video Template. I downloaded the link in the description box, but it still isn't showing in the options box. Help please.

  • @Dispersityy You have to install the codec. I would recommend against Huffy and move towards Lagarith instead.

  • @helios2k6 Oh, Lagarith worked. Thanks man.

  • Huffy, lossy gooy crop or resize hahaha my head is so in the gutter this morning lmfao

  • What is the most widely accepted codec? I want to store all ofy AE renders/conversions and instead of using different settings everytime it would be nice to have one format that will work on most players.

  • nice desktop wallpaper :)

  • @helios2k6 The MeGUI 3.5 that i have, doesn't let me update. Everytime I try to update i get a fatal error and the program automatically closes itself and I have AviSynth 2.5 installed. Whats the problem?

  • whats the meaning with "codec"? lol i dont understand

  • @HDRoppiN A "codec" stands for "compression/decompression" which a compressed video file contains. Some are better than others at compressing video to a small file size while keeping descent quality of the video. All compressed video losses some image quality, but the higher the bit rate the better. Uncompressed video files offer the original quality of the video and is best by far, but causes the video file to be extremely huge. Uncompressed video = no codec.

  • dude, why you use huffy codec, my render is uncompressed + wav on megui

  • @x0fiz You can use whatever you want. Huffy is an lossless compression format. You can also use Lagarith Lossless Video Codec.

  • @helios2k6 ignore my other comment, but uncrompressed isnt a lossless video codec?

  • @x0fiz You cannot deem raw, uncompressed video as "lossy" or "lossless". Lossy and lossless describe compression algorithms and methods. So if you are not compressing your video stream, you don't have to worry about the quality of the video.

  • Hello. I stumbled across your video tutorial here because I have had trouble with fellow youtubers "stealing" my videos and reposting them as their own. What do I need to know to prevent this from happening, and is this a practice you condone? Respectfully, jt27x3. Thanks.

  • @jt27x3 you can never stop people from downloading and re uploading your videos, all you can do is watermark them with your name/channel.

  • thnx dude for the tut,i didnt try it yet but i will later :D

  • I'm just wondering whats the point in encoding into this? Is it just to reduce the file size or is it just to get it looking better?

  • @combatsucksatm The uses for compressing video using x264 are tremendous. The whole point of using the x264 library is to take a very large video file and compress it without losing that much quality. An example of the usefulness of x264: Youtube uses the x264 library to compress all of its videos.

  • Also. how do you know what fps your video is recorded in?

  • After i mux the video i have no audio/video problems. The quality is good. But when i upload it to youtube it has horrible quality and the video starts lagging behind the audio.

    Any idea whats up?

  • hey my videos are always really pixelated and blurry when there is movement. Do you know how to fix that?

  • @ImBlakez I would have to know What settings are you using to encode your video? If you're using any type of 2pass profile in MeGUI, then you should try increasing the bitrate.

  • this is probably the most informative and clarifying video about this subject i could find. Thumbs up. btw, if i want to remove blocks (that sometimes apear in darker places of the vid) i just have to increase the bitrate?

ps Nice ecchi fate stay/night vid :D

  • For the audio I would rather take LAME MP3 or AC3

and I would NOT use "Normalize Peaks". It just puts up the frequency to the max found amplitude. Thats shit, because it kills first the dynamic and 2nd it doesnt make the volume equal with different tracks as many peoples false think.

  • @Fleshshredder Agreed

  • this thing rocks. nothing else gives a better result :x

  • i downloaded the generic profiles for megui(the doom9 link) jsut wondering where you got the 2pass insane encoder setting.. cuz i dont have it

  • @vinceowns I don't believe the Doom9 generic profiles have the 2pass insane profile. I used MeGUI's self-update function to grab that profile

  • @helios2k6 I was wondering, why is it that when i render through lagarith lossless, that it does not render the complete frames? for example it would look like maybe 4 frames through out a 6 second clip.

  • @Doofunator I've never had that happen before. Are you rendering it in Sony Vegas? What are your project settings? What settings did you use to encode the video? What are the stats of your principle video?

  • @helios2k6 I used both Vegas and AAE, it plays back choppy, but when i mux it to .mkv its fine. so i guess it isn't much of a big deal. just thought it was odd, and my initial footage is 1920x1080 .avi, project settings are just matched to the original footage both size and (60) FPS. And i for MeGUI i used x264 scratchpad, put quality to 26 and left everything else alone. i was just curious as why it would do it when rendered into lossless?

  • @Doofunator That's so strange. I've only ever had issue playing back uncompressed video footage when I open it up in Media Player Classic.

Weird...Well, at least it muxed properly.

  • @helios2k6 Yeah, and thankfully it did. lol

  • I am having trouble finding the huffy codec in my sony vegas render settings. I installed it and put the .dll into my sony vegas file and can't find it. What should I do to make it appear?

  • @RKLshinobi You might have issues installing Huffy using Windows 7 or Vista--especially if it's a 64-bit operating system. If that's the case, go ahead and use the Lagarith Lossless Video Codec instead of Huffy.

  • @helios2k6 I have a 32 bit. I also have the lagarith but its not showing up either

  • @RKLshinobi That's odd. Did you run the installer "As Administrator" ? If this doesn't work, you might have to turn off User Account Controls.

  • @helios2k6 Actually when I open up river past video cleaner I can see all the codecs the huffy and lagarith and all the others but sony vegas can't seem to see any of the codecs.

  • @RKLshinobi That's kinda weird. I've never had that issue before. The only other thing I can really think of is to run Sony Vegas as administrator. If that doesn't help, then I honestly have no idea.

  • @helios2k6 ohh ok then thanks

  • I have a question:

Lately, MeGui wouldn't update, but then I set the update server to be "Megui[dot]org[slash]auto" instead of "Megui[dot]org[slash]auto[slash]stable".

My MeGui just fully updated everything all of sudden.

Do you, personally, recommend changing the autoUpdate servers like that?

  • @playman350 I actually don't know if it really matters that much. I personally haven't had any issues with the default update server, but everybody's situation is different. If you don't experience any issues, then I think you're in the clear.

  • @helios2k6

    Thanks for the quick response.

By the way, I'm experiencing errors when trying to Multiplex my files to an MP4 file. However, if I try Matroska (MKV), it will work.

    Any ideas?

Well, I think I should also send my error log, too.

  • @playman350 If you send me your error log, I might be able to tell you what's going on.

  • Everytime I create a script it says "Error: Scripts return was not a video clip"

  • when i choose the huffy codec in son vegas it crashes after i click ok..... anyway to fix this?

  • @HDgameplay23 You have two options. You can try using an older version of Huffy or you can use the Lagarith Lossless Video Codec instead. I would choose the latter.

  • Holy fuck this is complication lol

  • holy shit this makes my brain sad :(

  • Thanks so much! I finaly found a tutorial that actually works. Haha. 5*

  • I've tried the MeGUI, but in the encoder settings I don't get that long list of options, it's almost empty??

  • You need to update the profiles in MeGUI. During the update process, a list of check-boxes will appear and ask if you want to add the following profiles. You'll need to check all the profiles listed. They are NOT checked by default. You'll need to force update if you already miss the opportunity to update your current profiles.

  • @helios2k6 - That's what's weird about it. I force updated it, all of the components in the list where checked. I even reinstalled it to make sure I did it right, but it still didn't work.

  • In that case, you'll need to update the profiles manually. Go to megui[dot]org[slash]auto and download the file "x264_presets_v33.zip" and take the "allprofiles" file that's located within the archive and place it in the MeGUI installation folder.

  • @helios2k6 thx alot!

  • So StaxRip is now prefered over MeGUI? I noticed the thread for profile's also became locked and the moderator stated 'x264 has changed a lot recently thus this thread is not so much needed'

  • I believe it's best to use whatever tool best fits your needs.

If encoding your media using MeGUI fulfills your needs, then use it. If StaxRip fulfills your needs, then use that.

  • nice :)

  • Megui crashes when i try to make a avc script ,doesnt even matter which videoformat i try to chuck in ,it always crashes lol

  • Why does megui crash when i want to create a AVS script O.o it crashes for each avi file i have created

  • so... are the settings in this vid the BEST POSSIBLE SETTINGS to view on utube

  • Not necessarily. You'll need to experiment with different profiles in MeGUI, or the X264 settings themselves, in order to get the best possible quality.

Unfortunately, each video is different and requires different levels of compression and analysis. The settings in this video are merely a reflection of the most extreme settings you can use, which result in a high compression to quality ratio. Experiment with varying levels of bit-rates and profile levels and see which best fits your needs

  • Im kinda new at this :) .Im wondering ...

in what way is lagarith better as huffyuv ? im using w7 and its working great ,where should the problems appear ?

  • The Lagarith codec achieves higher compression ratios than Huffy in most cases. You can explore the mathematics behind its algorithm on the official website or on multimediaWiki.

Furthermore, Lagarith allows you to encode videos in the YV12 colorspace, which will allow you to skip the color-space conversion during the x264 encoding.

But, feel free to use any lossless codec to render your media files from a video editor.

  • Oh thanks for the reply

  • NEED HELP PLZ!!

I only have three alternatives when I´m gonna choose encoder settings, I don´t have "2pass insane" that you´re showing.

    I have these alternatives:

    Snow: *scratchpad*

    x264: *scratchpad*

    XviD: *scratchpad*

    What should I do?

  • You have to update MeGUI. During the update process, a pop up will come up asking if you want to override several profiles. By default, they are NOT selected and you must select them manually. If you have already updated MeGUI and forgotten to allow MeGUI to override your profiles, you will need to go to megui(dot)org(slash)auto and download the latest "x264_presets" zip file. After you've done that, you can move that file to the megui profile folder that's located in the install directory

  • Me again , i have the same problem i downloaded the zip file from february 2010 i belive . But i dont know where to place it to make it work :S

  • Place the "allprofiles" folder in the megui installation folder, which is usually located in "Program Files"

  • Listen , i went to the site u gave the link for.I downloaded the zip file , if I open it there are like 3 .exe files.Anyways i placed the zip into the update_cache folder(where all the .zips are).doesnt work.

Anyways mate , i dont understand what u mean ... where should i put allprofiles folder to ? ,its already in the megui folder :S

    confusing :D

  • You downloaded the wrong file. Do not download "x264-1442.zip". Do not put anything in the "update_cache." You need to download the "x264_presets_v33.zip" as I have specifically instructed. After unzipping it, you have to place the "allprofiles" folder in the megui installation folder, which is usually located in your "Program Files" folder. If you don't know where that is, it is usually located on the "C:" drive.

  • Please take the time to read my instructions IN FULL. I did not instruct you to download the "x264" executable revision zip file.

  • Agreed. The side panel next to the youtube video has been stating that the Lagarith Lossless Codec is preferred over Huffy for some time now.

  • i cant see the huffy codec on sony vegas..ive donwload and installed the huffyuv 2.20..i choose .avi when i render but icant find the huffy codec..

  • @NxSProduction1im using xp 32bit

  • NxS,

What version of Sony Vegas are you using? 32-bit or 64-bit? Huffy is a a32-bit codec and will not work with a 64-bit version of sony vegas.

What version of Windows are you using? 32-bit or 64-bit? If you're using Vista or 7, UAC might cause problems during install.

Furthermore, Huffy has been known to have issues with Windows Vista and Windows 7. I recommend you switch to the Lagarith Lossless Video Codec.

  • Ah OK.

Huffy 2.2.0 has been known to have issues with all platforms. Try using Huffy 2.1.1 instead.

  • Gratz on the 10k views!

  • thank you so much for this tutorial! faved & 5 stars!

btw do you have the link to that wallpaper or do you still have it by any chance? it's really simplistic and I really like it :)

  • Hey there. I don't remember the exact link to the wallpaper, but you can find it at socwall (dot) com

  • dude, i install huffy but nothing rly happend :O

  • What OS are you running and is it 32-bit or 64-bit?

  • hm, i try to use uncompressed avi, and i use 64 bit vista :)

  • Ah, I thought so. Windows Vista and 7 tend to have issues with Huffy. Try using the Lagarith Lossless Video Codec instead. When you install Lagarith, don't forget to run it as administrator.

  • what capture card you recommend for a nice quality?

  • im sure its 32 bit

  • does this improve graphics during gameplay??? or is this just to make videos look better?

  • X264 is a free software library used to encode videos. It does not "improve graphics during gameplay" or "make videos look better." It's a method to compress video data; most video compression schemes result in a loss of quality.

  • is the quality from this better than using "easy h264"

  • plz help when i intall the huffy codec it doesnt show up in sony vegas...

  • @Skate1169

What version of Vegas do you use? If it's Vegas 64-bit, you IS screwed, because Huffy is a 32-bit only codec.

  • hello

    plz can you help me

i got some fatal errors when i click autop update on megui plz help me and dont know to instal profiles :S

    thankz matija

  • Hello there :D

Sorry to - maybe - ask a stupid question, but does meGUI work with Windows 64-bit?

  • I've tested MeGUI on Windows 7 64-bit with success.

In order for MeGUI to function, AviSynth must be installed. Some people have been having issues with AviSynth on 64-bit systems.

  • Thank you very much for the quick and fast response. :)

  • Whenever I try to install the Avisynth software it gives me an error saying NSIS error...

  • Thank you so much! The whole convertion thing seemed so intricate until I watched this video.

  • Send me your log. I can help you if I can get some information about your media.

Instructions to do so are listed in on the right

  • Comment removed

  • In that case, it doesn't seem like video file. The video file is probably muxed correctly. Try using a different media player, such as VLC, or different codecs, such as ffdshow, to render the sound.

  • im getting the :

    unable to render the file

you probably dont have the correct filters installed

    plz help!!

  • How i "install" the huffy? Where i putt it?

  • Watch the end of the video.

  • In order to install Huffy, right click on the "huffyuv.inf" file and choose "install"

  • Comment removed

  • Ahh, is this in Sony Vegas?

If so, it depends on how you want to manufacture your video.

The "Field Order" refers to the interlacing field dominance. If you intend for your video to be viewed on a CRT TV, then you should consider interlacing your video using either Field Order (most Hollywood DVDs use upper field order).

Otherwise, choose "none" (which is progressive scan). In general, if you want to distribute your media to any type of digital display (LCD, HDTV, etc) use progressive scan.

  • 30mb / min is rly good if u dont lost quality

  • really nice work, very nice tutorial,Now what was hard to do before now is like basic of moviemaking...good job m8

  • do you know how i can make the x264 videos web optimised? i want them to be flv files that can stream on the net? im trying to use the sony vegas avi thing x264vfw thanks

  • Is there any way, just ANY other way, not to be forced to render TWO separate files, audio and video?

  • There is an option called the "One Click Encoder" that is under the tools menu. You can load in your video source, your audio source, and your target profile.

From my understanding, you just click "Go!" and let it fly.

I would not recommend it because it gives you the least amount of control over the video encoding options.

With an AVS script, you can apply all types of filters to post-process your video

  • Sounds riskily easy as hell....

    I'm lazy.

  • Thanks for this great tutorial. I had a go at using MeGui/Avisynth a while back but found that it was just too much hassle. However i may go back to using it again now. May i just ask the filesize of this entie video and the final size of the example you (would have) rendered in this video?

  • The file size of this tutorial was: 62 megabytes.

    The file size of the example I rendered in the tutorial was 20 megabytes;

  • ok:)

  • Great tutorial, but one question for you,

why did you chose mp4 muxer and not mkv muxer?

I heard that mkv is the best format for x264.

  • There's no reason why I chose the mp4 muxer. I suggest you mux your video using the container that best fits your needs.

  • Comment removed

  • You either need to:

    1. Download the profiles manually and install them.

    2. Update MeGUI and have it install your profiles. This is done during the update when you see a window pop-up and a series of check-boxes associated with each profile.

  • Absolutely amazing tutorial. Thank you so, so much!

I subscribed. Looking forward to more tutorials :)

  • My question is why would someone go through all these steps to encode x264 in MeGUI and not just do it in VirtualDub which takes less work?

  • It's up to the user to decide if using VirtualDub or MeGUI best fits their needs. This tutorial is not meant to advocate for MeGUI or suggest in any way that there is only one method to encoding in X264. If you want to know the advantages of VirtualDub or MeGUI, please visit their respective websites.

Personally, I have not used VirtualDub; that is why this tutorial features MeGUI.

  • Furthermore, this tutorial is not meant to facilitate forum discussion on the topic of alternative programs, alternative codecs, alternative video editing software, etc...

Limit your comments to constructive criticism, questions, and comments directly related to the tutorial.

  • can someone tell me the diffrence between the passes?

there is 2nd pass - 2nd pass, automated 2nd pass and 3rd pass and so on.

    which is the best?

  • There isn't really a "best" setting. They all perform different procedures on your video file. When you encode a video, you can specify how how many times you want the encoder to analyze the video. 1-pass means that you want the encoder to immediately render the video. 2-pass means that you want the encoder to analyze the video on the 1st pass and render it on the 2nd pass. 3-pass means analyze the video twice and then render it on the 3rd pass.

  • in x264 (for youtube) it's best to use less than 5000 bitrate. in like 5500 it start to lag with HD cause the convert from high bitrate to youtube.

@ but my question too, is there any other way that u can automaticly add the audio and just not render itself and then add it to video. when i release many clips it sucks a lil :(

  • Hi!

Do you have any idea why I can't see my video but hear the audio?

  • I have this problem, not yet found a solution.

  • hi

whats the highest or best for youtube streaming?

    3500 kb?

    pleas help me, thx

  • There isn't necessarily a "highest" or "best" bitrate for youtube streaming. You'll have to encode your video in various different bitrates to determine which one best suits your needs.

    Here's my rule of thumb:

    1. Encode at a bitrate that produces the highest quality picture.

2a. If that bitrate does yields a file that is less than 2 gigabytes, then that bitrate is what I choose to use.

2b. Otherwise, I encode at a slightly lower bitrate

  • I don't know what Im doing wrong. I've taken a 1.5gig file, rendered it several times in Vegas trying different things and it somehow always ends up around 20gigs! If I even try and ecode that in Megui it takes over a day to encode, but I cancel cause thats ridiculous.

    1) how is a 1 gig file rendering into 20gigs?

    2) how can I compress it using vegas without losing much if any quality?

    3) Megui only encodes AVI? those files seem to be the biggest, WMV renders smaller for me

  • The reason why your file is large is because you're rendering using a lossless encoder (Huffy); there is no compression.

WMVs are compressed and, thusly, are smaller.

If megui is taking too long to encode, try using one of the other profiles, such as "X264 2Pass Fast"

MeGUI doesn't only encode videos using the AVI container. It has the ability to encode videos in other container formats. I chose the AVI format because it's suitable for lossless video compression.

  • There aren't any other ways to losslessly compress your video unless you use another lossless codec. You can try using:

    1. The Lagarith Lossless Video Codec

    2. The MSU Lossless Video Codec

    3. The FFV1 (ffdshow) Video Codec

I personally use the Lagarith Lossless Video Codec instead of Huffy, and that has offered me some reprieve from the space requirements.

  • I'll give those a try. Thanks for your help, I appreciate it.

  • can Vegas not render it using x264?also the avisynth link isn't working...

  • Vegas can render videos in X264. It's listed as, "MainConcept AVC/AAC (*.mp4)" in the "Render as" menu.

However, Vegas doesn't provide nearly as many options as MeGUI and I do not know how well Vegas compresses videos.

  • Thank you for bringing the broken link to my attention. It has been fixed.

  • np, thanks for posting this tutorial its very helpful. I have enqued my video and audio, however my :49 second clip I'm testing it with is taking an estimated time of 5hrs to encode. That can't be right, is it?

  • It depends on the Encoding Profile you have selected. Selecting the "X264 2Pass: Insane" profile tends to take a very long time.

Albeit, 5 hours is a bit longer than I would expect for a 49 second clip.

  • Congrats for your tutorial ;)

What is the size of your video about Assassin's Creed using x264?

  • The Assassin's Creed video was approximately 231 megabytes, rendered at 5,000 kilobits/s

  • how do u install huffyuv?

  • HuffyUV can be downloaded using the link to the right. You'll be directed to a download page where you can download a zip file containing the huffy.dll file. Once you unpack the zip file, right click on the huffyuv.inf file and select "Install"

  • THANKS SO MUCH! XD

  • great tut, cheers

  • why does my vegas not read avi files. It only reads the sound. It's a big waste of time converting my vids into something readable

  • Thanks, this has been very useful. :)

  • thank you =)

  • THANKS x) Btw where did you get that wallpaper?

  • what's the difference between those 3? bluray fast is slow

  • i forgot to ask you how to check fps on matroska cuz true hardsubbed vid is not playing smoothly....

    g-spot doesn't cover mkv/mp4

  • If you want to check the fps of any given piece of media, use the tool, "MediaInfo". You can google it, and it's the first result.

Just as a side note, videos using the MKV container can have variable frame rates, which will throw off the timing of your audio and your subs.

  • I don't know the specific details behind those three different profiles, but you can view them in the config window. In general, encoding anything for bluray will probably take a long time.

  • thanks so much for helping you are GREAT help and i'm gonna do expirementing......... hehe

  • how to merge avi or mkv files on megui

  • thanks finally i got it!! but is it sooo slow to encode (4-5 hrs), on vdub it takes like 1 hr or less, how can i make it faster?

  • You can choose a different profile other than "X264: Unrestricted 2-Pass Insane". Choose something like "X264 Unrestricted 2pass Balance" or "X264 Unrestricted 2pass Fast"

  • Rather, choose "X264: Standalone-Blu-ray_Fast"

  • Thanks dude,thats was really helpful,thanks again!

  • THANK YOU...finally a tutorial that was made by a professional (or atleast you sound professional)...im tired of watching other useless tutorials made by 12 year olds that lead to nowhere

  • hi i got probs on hardsubbing megui can u teach me?

  • In the AVS Script Creator, go to the "Filters" tab and at the very bottom, you will have the ability to add a Subtitle File to your AVS script. This should hardsub your video. Just make sure that your subtitles are saved in the proper format.

  • pls send me the link of AVS SCRIPT CREATOR for me to download

  • CUZ i got megui 0.3.1051 i think i gotta a wrong software?

  • MeGUI has the AVS Script Creator. It's under the tools menu. This was covered in the tutorial at 3:57

  • sorry for the inconvenience really cuz i need to hardsub these movies so the problem, i chosen x264 bluray unrestricted and queued it and i noticed that it's getting too big so i cancelled it. btw the original file size is 4.56 gb, how can i compress it to that size?

sorry i'm a vdub person, and thank you sooo much!

  • i don't have vegas, can i add black bars?
