In my opinion this is the best interpretation of the song, as it shows the depressive emotional situation after the death of your big Love, before committing suicide, very realistic...
It never ceases to sicken me that it would even occur to someone to physically assault another human being over such a meaningless bit of trivia. Fortunately it is coming from someone who is hopefully much closer to the exit than the entrance.
Why does it matter what country this song came from? Lydia Lunch is obviously amazing, and if you never heard this before, I'm glad that you get to hear it now. Let's not get into it 'who did first' unless we're going to pull up Billie Holiday. A beautiful cover is a beautiful cover. Let's leave it at that and stop throwing around nationality or 'who did it first'. Good music doesn't have borders.
@brandoncipelle this is a great piece of music and... why the hell are people bothering with other comments than ones saying it is?... the comments made for this song are just... ridiculous i; it deserves better...
Americans you make intellgent Americans like myself get a bad name . Please stop being ignorant wankerrs. Your comments might as well be pisstakes. I'm not saying I hate my fellow CUNTRY mena and Womenjust quit acting like ignorant cunts. YOu give us a bad name . Truth is painful init.
That's why Cash's Hurt touches more deeply of a heart than the original Reznor's version. The "hurt" and the sadness simply can't be expressed by eerie sounds. The eerie effects may express the physical hurt and pain, but never the hurt inside. What gives the emotional hurt is the melancholy in the beautiful melody.
@wildfission I think you're wrong on both songs. This and Venetian Snares' version are my favourite renditions of Gloomy Sunday. And I've always been a fan of the use of unusual instrumentation in music - I feel it allows for even deeper expression of emotion than otherwise. I wouldn't use the word "eerie" to describe the atmosphere at all.
Indeed I dislike those versions which emphasize the "gloomy" and death emotion and play and sing the song like zombies do. The cracking music and the dying voice simply don't touch the inner part of the emotion as they really miss out the essence of the original song. This song is to be played elegantly in a way that it softens the heart and make us cry and feel the sorrow of the original writer losing his love. But now all these eerie versions just disgracefully emphasize death and nothing more
I also resent Henry Rollins saying that Lydia wouldn't like me. Sure she doesn't like anyone but she liked me long before him. Plus I suggest Hank wear deodorant.....lol
If you want to know more about HURT I suggest you pick up Nikki Sixx's Heroin Diaries. I guess I liked both Cash & Reznor's interpretation of the song. I don't think the original artist ever got paid. Yup Hurt & the Heroin Diaries were written by the same & it wasn't Reznor or Sixx...
@myteevc15 -WTF?!! Are you just randomly "word-salad"-ing? Or perhaps you're implying this is a rip-off of NIN's "Hurt"? If so, she must've had access to a time-machine...
@myteevc15 This track is from the album "Queen of Siam" released in 1980 and a cover of a song first recorded in 1934. Mr Reznor's LP "The Downward Spiral" on which "Hurt" appears was released in 1994, 14 years after Lydia's LP and 60 years after the origin "Gloomy Sunday" . It never ceases to amaze me just how ignorant you kids are, and how keen you are to comment on things you know so little about. It must be the anonymity of the internet cos face 2 face, you'd get punched.
Well at least the kids have a passive aggressive d-bag scoffing at them in the same stratifying way jocks did to you in high school. You perpetuate the same capitalist dogma I assume you've spent your whole life bitching about. Enjoy your self aggrandized glory.
@makerampsnotbombs Ah, an American I see. Not being one of your countrymen my childhood was not split into "Jocks" and "Dweebs", or whatever your expression for non jocks happens to be, and fortunately I am not afflicted by your neurosis which you have rather clumsily attempted to project on to me. If you had paid a bit more attention in your remedial psychology classes at "High School" you may well have identified your comment as the cry for help it so obviously is.
Fine. Let me be more straight forward, maybe a little more "American" if you will. Maybe instead of being an asshole about something this kid is obviously ignorant about, you should educate him in a more civilized way. Perhaps direct him or her to proper sources, rather than trying to flex nuts. It was rude of me to make those gross assumptions of you, but let's face it, you're trying to make up for something. Peace.
@madmic1967 oh look. A classic school yard bully. Wanting to punch someone for getting obscure information "wrong". It's people like you who should be ass whipped for being such knuckle dragging dregs of society looking for any excuse to create violence. Get thee to a cage, and lock yourself up.. DO the world a favour. there's enough violence without morons like you want to create more over essentially NOTHING. Information....musical information. BIG FUCKING DEAL
@LikesTruth oh look. A classic hypocrite. You are "appalled" at my proposition of violence but suggest I should be punished with an "ass whipping" which is an act of violence in itself. I merely suggested punching someone for being ignorant, whereas your response is totally out of proportion; like the death penalty for downloading MP3s. I'm a big man but a punch from me is no where near as harmful as being repeatedly thrashed with a donkey. Like this truth, you're a hypocrite.
@madmic1967 Since it has some of the most positive votes I read this first, but have also read a lot of the responses to you, and either people never get in scraps anymore or, like you said, the Internet gives people... I'll say "guts" - that they don't have when the chips are down in real life. You comment isn't threatening to anyone; it's just that the thought of actually being held physically accountable for an asinine personality is a foreign concept to many. Those were the first to get hit
do you remember the comment you were addressing? I am curious. hey, i agree with your generalization, you know. i think we should institute a REVERSE logan's run.
if fucking YOUTUBE could be a little bit faster in buffering, perhaps I can watch it, but you crappy people can`t do anything since months, shitty persons

I hurt myself today,
To see if I'd still feel.
I focus on the pain,
The only thing that's real..
.
The needle tears a hole,
The old familiar sting;
Try to kill it all away...
But I remember everything.
